The involvement of supratentorial white matter in multiple system atrophy: a diffusion tensor imaging tractography study.

It has been assumed that cognitive disorder and visual-spatial disturbance in multiple system atrophy of the predominantly cerebellar type (MSA-C) are attributable to degradation of cerebellar function. The purpose of this study was to use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography to determine if patients with MSA-C characterized in part by visual-spatial disorders and cognitive disorders have changes of the structural connectivity network of nerve fibers, and to further describe the structural connectivity network. The study included 20 patients with MSA-C and 30 age- and sex-matched health

Geriatric depression and its relation with cognitive impairment and dementia.

Different subtypes of depressive syndromes exist in late life; many of them have cognitive impairment and sometimes it is difficult to differentiate them from dementia. This research aimed to investigate subtypes of geriatric depression associated with cognitive impairment, searched for differential variables and tried to propose a study model. A hundred and eighteen depressive patients and forty normal subjects matched by age and educational level were evaluated with an extensive neuropsychological battery, scales to evaluate neuropsychiatric symptoms and daily life activities (DLA). Depressi

Neuropsychological improvement in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy after posterior decompression surgery.

Patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy sometimes complain of cognitive dysfunction, which may be coincidence. However, cognitive dysfunction may be related to disorders of the cervical spine and/or spinal cord. This study investigated cognitive dysfunction in patients with cervical spinal disorders. A total of 79 patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (40 women and 39 men, mean age 61.2 years) underwent cervical laminoplasty between January 2006 and July 2007. Ten of these 79 patients (7 women and 3 men, mean age 65.2 years) complained of moderate to severe memory disturbances. T

Advances in the management of ADHD in children and adolescents.

This review synthesizes evidence on managing attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents, focusing on studies published between 2019 and 2025. Recent research supports a dimensional, pleiotropic model of ADHD characterized by heterogeneity, developmental fluctuation, and frequent comorbidity. ADHD is a chronic, fluctuating condition, underscoring the need for sustained and individualized care. Diagnostic strategies favor semi-structured interviews over rating scales, with neuroimaging or biological tests offering limited diagnostic utility. Neuropsychological te

Setting a research agenda for examining early risk for elevated cognitive disengagement syndrome symptoms using data from the ABCD cohort.

Little research has examined early life risk for symptoms of cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) despite a well-established literature regarding co-occurring outcomes (e.g., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder). The current study estimated bivariate associations between early life risk factors and CDS in a large and representative sample of U.S. children. We conducted secondary analyses of baseline data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (N = 8,096 children, 9-10 years old). Birthing parents reported early life risk factors on a developmental history questionn

Cognitive functioning and intra-individual variability in essential tremor and Parkinson's disease: A comparative study.

Objective: Cognitive decline may be more prevalent in essential tremor (ET) than previously recognized. Dispersion-based intraindividual variability (IIV-D) is proposed as a marker of neurological integrity. While elevated IIV-D has been noted in Parkinson's disease (PD), it has not been explored in ET. This study investigated cognitive functioning and IIV-D in ET compared to PD and cognitively intact controls (IC). Method: Neuropsychological data from 188 PD, 53 ET, and 135 IC patients were reviewed. Group comparisons on neuropsychological tests were examined. IIV-D was calculated via the int

Efficacy and acceptability of a self-guided internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral educational program for obsessive-compulsive symptoms with international recruitment.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy is an effective treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, there are many barriers in accessing this treatment, with stigma being a particularly prominent barrier for many patients. Self-guided internet-delivered cognitive-behavioural therapy (ICBT), which does not require any contact with a therapist, has the potential to overcome this barrier. However, there is limited research on the efficacy of self-guided ICBT for OCD. The aim of the current study was to examine the efficacy of self-guided ICBT for OCD in a large international sample. A Randomized Controlled Trial for Gambling Disorder and PTSD: Seeking Safety and CBT.

Studies show a compelling association between gambling disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder. However, there have been no randomized controlled trials for this co-morbidity. The aim of the current study was to compare two evidence-based models, one that addresses both disorders and another that addresses gambling alone. Sixty-five men and women with gambling disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder were randomized to one of two treatment conditions delivered via telehealth, Seeking Safety (integrated treatment for gambling and posttraumatic stress disorder) or Cognitive-Behavioral Thera

The Spectrum of Cognitive Dysfunction in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: An Update.

Cognitive dysfunction is an important non-motor symptom in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that has a negative impact on survival and caregiver burden. It shows a wide spectrum ranging from subjective cognitive decline to frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and covers various cognitive domains, mainly executive/attention, language and verbal memory deficits. The frequency of cognitive impairment across the different ALS phenotypes ranges from 30% to 75%, with up to 45% fulfilling the criteria of FTD. Significant genetic, clinical, and pathological heterogeneity reflects deficits in various cogni

Multimodal Preventive Trial for Alzheimer's Disease: MIND-ADmini Pilot Trial Study Design and Progress.

BACKGROUND: Interventions simultaneously targeting multiple risk factors and mechanisms are most likely to be effective in preventing cognitive impairment. This was indicated in the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) testing a multidomain lifestyle intervention among at-risk individuals. The importance of medical food at the early symptomatic disease stage, prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD), was emphasized in the LipiDiDiet trial. The feasibility and effects of multimodal interventions in prodromal AD are unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evalu

Cognitive profiles and clinical factors in type III spinal muscular atrophy: a preliminary study.

Cognitive abilities are often affected in progressive neurodegenerative disorders, but there is a lack of understanding about whether spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) patients experience cognitive deficits and, if so, whether they are associated with clinical factors. A sample of 22 type III SMA patients and 22 healthy controls completed a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, including tests in memory, executive function, language, visuospatial, and global cognitive functioning. Clinical severity was assessed using the Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale, the Revised Upper Limb Module and the

Fluid intelligence and naturalistic task impairments after focal brain lesions.

Classical executive tasks, such as Wisconsin card-sorting and verbal fluency, are widely used as tests of frontal lobe control functions. Since the pioneering work of Shallice and Burgess (1991), it has been known that complex, naturalistic tasks can capture deficits that are missed in these classical tests. Matching this finding, deficits in several classical tasks are predicted by loss of fluid intelligence, linked to damage in a specific cortical "multiple-demand" (MD) network, while deficits in a more naturalistic task are not. To expand on these previous results, we examined the effect of

Sluggish Cognitive Tempo Factors in Emerging Adults:Symptomatic and Neuropsychological Correlates.

We examined whether there are factors of SCT in nonclinical young adults and whether SCT factors show differential relationships with depression, anxiety, ADHD, and executive functioning as assessed by self-report (EF-SR) or neuropsychological performance (EF-NP). Factor analysis revealed Daydreaming/Bored (D/B), Lethargy (L), and Cognitive Complaints (CC) factors. CC was associated with anxiety and D/B with depression. CC and D/B were associated with inattentive ADHD, while D/B was associated with hyperactive/impulsive ADHD. While all factors were associated with EF-SR, there were few relatio

Mild Cognitive Impairment in Geriatrics.

Mild cognitive impairment remains a clinical diagnosis, aided by history, neurologic examination, screening mental status examination, and secondary testing. It can be difficult to distinguish from normal aging without understanding a patient's prior level of intellectual function and new complaint. Geriatricians encounter patients with mild cognitive impairment in all long-term care settings. Making the diagnosis allows patients and their families to understand limits and develop strategies to maximize function. Etiologies associated with mild cognitive impairment include degenerative and vas

Cognitive flexibility deficits in male mice exposed to neonatal hyperoxia followed by concentrated ambient ultrafine particles.

Epidemiological evidence indicates an association between early-life exposure to air pollution and preterm birth. Thus, it is essential to address the subsequent vulnerability of preterm infants, who are exposed to unique factors at birth including hyperoxia, and subsequently to air pollution. Health effects of air pollution relate to particle size and the ultrafine particulate component (<100 nm) is considered the most reactive. We previously reported neonatal mice exposed to hyperoxia (60% oxygen), mimicking preterm oxygen supplementation, for the first 4 days of life, followed by exposure t
