Functional Connectivity in Dorsolateral Frontal Cortex: Intracranial Electroencephalogram Study.

Motivation: Mechanisms underlying the variation in the appearance of electroencephalogram (EEG) over human head are not well characterized. We hypothesized that spatial variation of the EEG, being ultimately linked to variations in cortical neurobiology, was dependent on cortical connectivity patterns. Specifically, we explored the relationship of resting-state functional connectivity derived from intracranial EEG (iEEG) data in seven (N = 7) human epilepsy patients with the intrinsic dynamic variability of the local iEEG. We asked whether primary and association brain areas over the lateral f

What Can We Tell About the Effect of Electroconvulsive Therapy on the Human Hippocampus?

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective antidepressant treatment, although its mechanisms of action remain unclear. Since 2010, several structural magnetic resonance imaging studies based on a neuroplastic hypothesis have consistently reported increases in the hippocampal volume following ECT. Moreover, volume increases in the human dentate gyrus, where neurogenesis occurs, have also been reported. These results are in line with the preclinical findings of ECT-induced neuroplastic changes, including neurogenesis, gliogenesis, synaptogenesis, and angiogenesis, in rodents and nonhu

Olfactory Function and Diffusion Tensor Imaging as Markers of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Early Stages of Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is typified by motor signs and symptoms but can also lead to significant cognitive impairment and dementia Parkinson's Disease Dementia (PDD). While dementia is considered a nonmotor feature of PD that typically occurs later, individuals with PD may experience mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI) earlier in the disease course. Olfactory deficit (OD) is considered another nonmotor symptom of PD and often presents even before the motor signs and diagnosis of PD. We examined potential links among cognitive impairment, olfactory functioni

Slowing on quantitative EEG is associated with transition to dementia in mild cognitive impairment.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities are greater in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with Lewy bodies (MCI-LB) than in MCI due to Alzheimer's disease (MCI-AD) and may anticipate the onset of dementia. We aimed to assess whether quantitative EEG (qEEG) slowing would predict a higher annual hazard of dementia in MCI across these etiologies. MCI patients (n = 92) and healthy comparators (n = 31) provided qEEG recording and underwent longitudinal clinical and cognitive follow-up. Associations between qEEG slowing, measured by increased theta/alpha ratio, and clinical progression from MCI to

The Effect of Hypoglycemia on Spectral Moments in EEG Epochs of Different Durations in Type 1 Diabetes Patients.

The potential of using an electroencephalogram (EEG) to detect hypoglycemia in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been investigated in both time and frequency domains. Under hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemic clamp conditions, we have shown that the brain's response to hypoglycemic episodes could be described by the centroid frequency and spectral gyration radius evaluated from spectral moments of EEG signals. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of hypoglycemia on spectral moments in EEG epochs of different durations and to propose the optimal time window for hypoglycemia detect

Portable rehabilitation system with brain-computer interface for inpatients with acute and subacute stroke: A feasibility study.

The feasibility and safety of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems for patients with acute/subacute stroke have not been established. The aim of this study was to firstly demonstrate the feasibility and safety of a bedside BCI system for inpatients with acute/subacute stroke in a small cohort of inpatients. Four inpatients with early-phase hemiplegic stroke (7-24 days from stroke onset) participated in this study. The portable BCI system showed real-time feedback of sensorimotor rhythms extracted from scalp electroencephalograms (EEGs). Patients attempted to extend the wrist on their affecte

Neural basis of the visual working memory deficit in schizophrenia: Merging evidence from fMRI and EEG.

Although people with schizophrenia (PSZ) exhibit robust and reliable deficits in working memory (WM) capacity, the neural processes that give rise to this impairment remain poorly understood. One reason for this lack of clarity is that most studies employ a single neural recording modality-each with strengths and weaknesses-with few examples of integrating results across modalities. To address this gap, we conducted a secondary analysis that combined data from an overlapping set of subjects in previously published electroencephalographic and functional magnetic resonance imaging studies that u

Television-induced electronegative photoparoxysmal response: an extratemporal seizure mimic?

Video-EEG monitoring is an established gold-standard procedure for diagnosis and differentiation of epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. Epilepsy misdiagnosis, to which factors such as EEG artifact misinterpretation contribute to, is common, and can have long-lasting iatrogenic repercussions to the clinical management of affected patients. Among the many types of responses to photic stimulation, artifacts and physiologic and epileptic responses are possible. All of these can interfere with EEG interpretation when provoked by a source of illumination. Photic-induced responses are of increasing

An integrated deep learning model for motor intention recognition of multi-class EEG Signals in upper limb amputees.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Recognition of motor intention based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals has attracted considerable research interest in the field of pattern recognition due to its notable application of non-muscular communication and control for those with severe motor disabilities. In analysis of EEG data, achieving a higher classification performance is dependent on the appropriate representation of EEG features which is mostly characterized by one unique frequency before applying a learning model. Neglecting other frequencies of EEG signals could deteriorate the recognition per

Application of bi-modal signal in the classification and recognition of drug addiction degree based on machine learning.

Most studies on drug addiction degree are made based on statistical scales, addicts' account, and subjective judgement of rehabilitation doctors. No objective, quantified evaluation has been made. This paper uses devises the synchronous bimodal signal collection and experimentation paradigm with electroencephalogram (EEG) and forehead high-density near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) device. The drug addicts are classified into mild, moderate and severe groups with reference to the suggestions of researchers and medical experts. Data of 45 drug addicts (mild: 15; moderate: 15; and severe: 15) is

Epileptic Seizure Detection on an Ultra-Low-Power Embedded RISC-V Processor Using a Convolutional Neural Network.

The treatment of refractory epilepsy via closed-loop implantable devices that act on seizures either by drug release or electrostimulation is a highly attractive option. For such implantable medical devices, efficient and low energy consumption, small size, and efficient processing architectures are essential. To meet these requirements, epileptic seizure detection by analysis and classification of brain signals with a convolutional neural network (CNN) is an attractive approach. This work presents a CNN for epileptic seizure detection capable of running on an ultra-low-power microprocessor. T

Continuous Electroencephalogram and Antiseizure Medication Use in an International Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury Population.

BACKGROUND: Electrographic seizures are frequent and associated with worse outcomes following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite this, the use of continuous electroencephalogram (cEEG) remains low. Our study describes cEEG usage and treatment dosing antiseizure medications (ASMs) in an international pediatric TBI population, hypothesizing that children monitored with cEEG have an increased rate of treatment ASMs because of electrographic seizure detection, compared with children who are not monitored with cEEG. METHODS: This subanalysis of the TBI cohort of the international PANGEA study i

Sources of the frontocentral mismatch negativity and P3a responses in schizophrenia patients and healthy comparison subjects.

BACKGROUND: Mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a are event-related potential measures of early auditory information processing that are increasingly used as translational biomarkers in the development of treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders. These responses are reduced in schizophrenia patients over the frontocentral scalp electrodes and are associated with important domains of cognitive and psychosocial functioning. While MMN and P3a responses are generated by a dynamic network of cortical sources distributed across the temporal and frontal brain regions, it is not clear how these sources i

Hemisphere-Dependent Ictal Tachycardia Versus Ictal Bradycardia in a Critically Ill Patient.

Tachycardia is a common ictal phenomenon; however, ictal bradycardia is less commonly reported and rarely presents as ictal asystole/syncope. In critically ill patients, seizures are much less likely to manifest with overt clinical signs, i.e., are more likely to be subtle or nonconvulsive. In this setting, changes in heart rate may be the only clue that seizures are occurring. The authors report an exemplary case of a 78-year-old right-handed man who presented with spontaneous left frontal intraparenchymal hemorrhages. During standard clinical monitoring in the Neuro-Intensive Care Unit, the

Deep Learning for EEG Seizure Detection in Preterm Infants.

EEG is the gold standard for seizure detection in the newborn infant, but EEG interpretation in the preterm group is particularly challenging; trained experts are scarce and the task of interpreting EEG in real-time is arduous. Preterm infants are reported to have a higher incidence of seizures compared to term infants. Preterm EEG morphology differs from that of term infants, which implies that seizure detection algorithms trained on term EEG may not be appropriate. The task of developing preterm specific algorithms becomes extra-challenging given the limited amount of annotated preterm EEG d

Long-term prognosis of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: A systematic review searching for sex differences.

PURPOSE: Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), like other forms of idiopathic generalized epilepsy, shows a marked female predominance. However, few studies have specifically addressed the role of sex in its long-term prognosis. We performed a systematic review of the literature relevant to JME prognosis, focusing on sex-based differences in prognostic factors and outcome. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search of the PubMed and Scopus databases was performed, considering all articles up to April 2020 in which long-term prognosis in JME had been explored and sex differences in outcome or pro

Seizure outcome after epilepsy surgery in tuberous sclerosis complex: Results and analysis of predictors from a multicenter study.

Epilepsy surgery is recommended in selected patients with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC). However, reports on predictive factors of seizure outcome are variable. Here we report on seizure and cognitive outcome of 35 TSC patients who received surgery for refractory epilepsy in 7 Italian centers over a period of 22 years (1997-2019). The rate of seizure-free individuals at last follow-up (mean 7.5 years, range 1-21 years) was 51%. Patients with longer follow-up (≥10 years) had a lower rate of Engel I outcome (11.1%) than those who received surgery in the last 10 years (65.4%, p = 0.003). Facto

A neural index of inefficient evidence accumulation in dyslexia underlying slow perceptual decision making.

Visual processing deficits have been widely reported in developmental dyslexia however the locus of cognitive dysfunction remains unclear. Here, we examined the neural correlates of perceptual decision-making using a dot-motion task and electroencephalography (EEG) and investigated whether presenting deficits were unique to children with dyslexia or if they were also evident in other, typically developing children with equally immature reading systems. Sixty-eight children participated: 32 with dyslexia (DD; 16 females); 21 age-matched controls (AM; 11 females) and 15 reading-matched controls …
