A 50-year-old woman presented with a headache and nausea. A sellar and suprasellar mass was detected on MRI; the tumor was heterogeneously enhanced with gadolinium, and the pituitary stalk was slightly thickened. Laboratory tests revealed severe growth hormone, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone deficiencies. A pathological examination of the tumor showed scattered granulomas with central necrosis and Langhans giant cells. Tuberculin skin and QuantiFERON TB-Gold tests (QFT-2G) were positive. Accordingly, we diagnosed the patient with pituitary tub

Renal angiomyolipoma is a hamartomatous, benign tumor composed of blood vessels, fatty tissue and smooth muscle cells, and is often detected incidentally. It can also be associated with the tuberous-sclerosis complex (TSC). Pregnancy and use of oral contraceptives are known to be associated with an increased risk of tumoral rupture and bleeding. Herein, we report a unique case of renal angiomyolipoma associated with TSC who presented with hypovolemic shock as a result of spontaneous rupture of a giant renal pseudoaneurysm, immediately after pregnancy. Emergency endovascular treatment was succe

Griscelli syndrome type 2 is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, due to a mutation in RAB27A gene. It associates partial albinism, silver hair and immune deficiency. We report the case of a 6 year-old boy who was admitted to the Emergency department with severe sepsis complicated by hemophagocytic syndrome. Many clinical and biological criteria leads to the diagnosis of type 2 Griscelli syndrome: consanguineous family, recurrent infection, absence of psychomotor retardation, oculocutaneous albinism, silver hair, occurrence of hemophagocytic syndrome and especially the pathognomonic appearance

The oropharyngeal cavity of Hoplias malabaricus, an ichthyophagous freshwater fish, is anatomically adapted to predation. Macroscopic and microscopic analyses were conducted in order to study the morphology and system of implantation and replacement of teeth. The results showed that this teleost has conical and caniniform teeth, with an orthodentin crown covered by an enameloid cap and a vascularised orthodentin in the root. With regard to the implantation system, there is a junction between the tooth and the bone tissue, as a typical physiological dental ankylosis. The teeth are replaced by a

Disseminated cysticercosis is a parasitic infestation of pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. A 19-year-old female presented with multiple nodules all over her body since 12 months. Histopathology showed features suggestive of parasitic granuloma with multinucleated giant cells and plenty of eosinophils admixed with necrosis. Ultrasonography of these lesions showed multiple well-defined cystic lesions of varying size with a few specks of calcification. Cranial computed tomography scan showed bilateral, multiple, small hyperdense lesions in the supratentorial compartment. She was treated with oral alb

The aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a benign cystic and expanding osteolytic lesion consisting of bone-filled spaces of variable size, separated by connective tissue containing trabeculae of bone or osteoid tissue and osteoclast giant cells. Radiographic findings may vary from unicystic or moth-eaten radiolucencies to extensive multilocular lesions with bilateral expansion and destruction of mandibular cortices. Treatment modalities include curettage (with reported recurrences) and resection with immediate reconstruction. The main arterial and feeder vessels may be embolized to prevent profuse i

A 42-year-old female laboratory worker presented with a left index finger skin lesion after an accidental prick while handling samples of a cultural exam of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Surgical excision was performed and pathology analysis revealed a dermic chronic inflammatory process with no granulomas. Later, a non-painful lymphadenopathy appeared in the left axilla as well as brownish indurated skin lesions in the lower limbs consistent with erythema nodosum. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the lymph node revealed epithelioid granulomas, Langhans' multinucleated giant cells and the presen

A 47-year-old woman was hospitalized for syncope. An electrocardiogram showed complete right bundle branch block and T-wave inversion in leads III, aVF, and V2-4. Cardiac catheterization was performed since the echocardiogram demonstrated the existence of a left ventricular apical aneurysm and apical thrombus. Coronary angiography revealed normal coronary arteries. An endomyocardial biopsied specimen from the right ventricular apical wall demonstrated typical noncaseating granulomas with giant cells. There was no evidence suggesting the involvement of other systemic organs. The patient was dia

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), a tumor-like destructive lesion, is characterized by the presence of cavities of different sizes, which are filled with blood, connective tissue-septated with fibroblasts, histiocytes, osteoclast multinucleated giant cells, osteoids, bone trabecules, and accompanied by high intraosseous pressure. ABC most frequently occurs in the second decade of life. ABC is located in the metaphyseal area in children, by displacing to the diaphysis during their growth. Surgery is a basic treatment for ABC. Its relapses frequently occur, which depends on the method of a surgical in

Fibrous dysplasia is a condition characterised by excessive proliferation of bone-forming mesenchymal cells. Although a variety of causative factors are described, the exact aetiology is yet to be fully known. The maxilla is the most commonly affected facial bone, with facial asymmetry being the usual complaint. Surgery is the treatment of choice with two available options, namely, conservative bone shaving and radical excision and reconstruction. We describe the case of a 25-year-old male who presented with a giant monofocal fibrous dysplasia of the left maxilla with facial asymmetry, includi

Presented in part at the XXVIII Symposium of the International Society of Dermatopathology, Paris, November 14-17, 2007. A 13-year-old boy developed a bulky mass close to the right axillary region and an infiltrated plaque on the abdominal skin. Two years earlier, the diagnosis of follicular mycosis fungoides has been established. Biopsies of both areas revealed typical features of granulomatous slack skin (GSS). Within some of the giant cells, doubly refractile material of unknown origin was found. It may be speculated that in the reported case of follicular mycosis fungoides in childhood, GS

The incidence of diagnosed xanthogranuloma of the sellar region is very low [1, 2, 5, 6]. We report about two cases 1) in a 57-year-old female and 2) in a 5-year-old boy. In both cases radiographic findings revealed an inhomogeneous, contrast enhancing sellar lesion. Histopathology showed the typical features of a xanthogranuloma of the sellar region with cholesterol clefts, lympho-plasmacellular infiltrates, marked hemosiderin deposits, multinucleated foreign body giant cells around cholesterol clefts, accumulation of macrophages and only small epithelial cell clusters [6]. As xanthogranuloma

PURPOSE: To report the case of a patient with nodular scleritis who was diagnosed as having sarcoidosis by a biopsy of scleral nodules.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 26-year-old man with nodular scleritis underwent a biopsy of scleral nodules. The year before, he had been diagnosed with granulomatous iridocyclitis of the right eye. Although sarcoidosis had been suspected, extensive systemic examinations resulted in no positive findings of sarcoidosis. Histopathological specimens revealed non-caseating epithelioid granuloma with giant cells. The nodular scleritis was resolved by topical co

A 5-year-old girl with giant cutaneous congenital melanocytic nevi was examined because of right esotropia. She had multiple uveal coloboma-like lesions of various sizes and irregular areas of retinal pigment epithelial alterations in the right fundus. Magnetic resonance imaging studies demonstrated right-sided ventriculomegaly, right intraventricular presumed dysplastic neuroectodermal tumor, and right-sided cortical migration anomaly. The clearly lateralized ocular, cutaneous, and central nervous system findings in this patient may point towards a probable common underlying pathogenetic mech

A 64-year-old man presented a large pineal cystic lesion manifesting as headache and exhibiting unusual neuroradiological findings. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cystic lesion appearing as hyperintense on both T1- and T2-weighted images, and a nodular lesion which was hypointense on T1-and mixed intensity on T2-weighted images. The cystic mass was removed via a right occipital transtentorial approach. Histological examination disclosed that the inner surface of the cystic part consisted of bi-layered epithelial lining, portions of which had changed to stratified squamous epithelium. The

The activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) gene, specifically expressed in germinal center B cells in mice, is a member of the cytidine deaminase family. We herein report mutations in the human counterpart of AID in patients with the autosomal recessive form of hyper-IgM syndrome (HIGM2). Three major abnormalities characterize AID deficiency: (1) the absence of immunoglobulin class switch recombination, (2) the lack of immunoglobulin somatic hypermutations, and (3) lymph node hyperplasia caused by the presence of giant germinal centers. The phenotype observed in HIGM2 patients (and in AID

This study assessed the potential of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) purified from Pasteurella multocida to cause pulmonary pathology or exacerbate lesions produced by gamma-irradiated nonviable Aspergillus fumigatus conidia when administered via the intra-air sac route in turkeys. LPS provoked suppurative airsacculitis, pleuritis, and pneumonia. Nonviable conidia produced airsacculitis and transient pneumonitis but did not elicit multinucleate giant cells, which are a feature of the inflammatory process in A. fumigatus infection. LPS in combination with A. fumigatus conidia resulted in accelerated p
