Cytokine modulation and immunoregulation of uterine NK cells in pregnancy disorders.

Uterine natural killer (uNK) cells play a pivotal role in promoting placental development and supporting maternal-fetal immune tolerance, primarily through cytokine regulation and growth factor production. While the importance of uNK cells in pregnancy is well-established, the mechanisms of their interactions with trophoblasts and contributions to various pregnancy complications remain incompletely understood. This review highlights recent advancements in understanding uNK cell functions, with a focus on cytokine production, growth factor secretion, and receptor-ligand interactions, particular

Integrated Ca, Mg, Cu, and Zn supply upregulates leaf anatomy and metabolic adjustments in Eucalyptus seedlings.

Adaptive responses to abiotic stresses such as soil acidity in Eucalyptus-the most widely planted broad-leaf forest genus globally-are poorly understood. This is particularly evident in physiological and anatomical disorders that inhibit plant development and wood quality. We aimed to explore how the supply of Ca and Mg through liming (lime), combined with Cu and Zn fertilization (CZF), influences physiological and anatomical responses during Eucalyptus grandis seedlings growth in tropical acid soil. Therefore, related parameters of leaf area and leaf anatomy, stomatal size, leaf gas exchange,

Behind the Curtain of Abnormal Placentation in Pre-Eclampsia: From Molecular Mechanisms to Histological Hallmarks.

Successful human pregnancy needs several highly controlled steps to guarantee an oocyte's fertilization, the embryo's pre-implantation development, and its subsequent implantation into the uterine wall. The subsequent placenta development ensures adequate fetal nutrition and oxygenation, with the trophoblast being the first cell lineage to differentiate during this process. The placenta sustains the growth of the fetus by providing it with oxygen and nutrients and removing waste products. It is not surprising that issues with the early development of the placenta can lead to common pregnancy d

Systematic review of mesotherapy: a novel avenue for the treatment of hair loss.

Mesotherapy is a technique by which lower doses of therapeutic agents and bioactive substances are administered by intradermal injections to the skin. Through intradermal injections, mesotherapy can increase the residence time of therapeutic agents in the affected area, thus allowing for the use of lower doses and longer intervals between sessions which may in turn improve the treatment outcome and patient compliance. This systematic review aims to summarize the current literature that evaluates the efficacy of this technique for the treatment of hair loss and provides an overview of the resul

Trabid patient mutations impede the axonal trafficking of adenomatous polyposis coli to disrupt neurite growth.

ZRANB1 (human Trabid) missense mutations have been identified in children diagnosed with a range of congenital disorders including reduced brain size, but how Trabid regulates neurodevelopment is not understood. We have characterized these patient mutations in cells and mice to identify a key role for Trabid in the regulation of neurite growth. One of the patient mutations flanked the catalytic cysteine of Trabid and its deubiquitylating (DUB) activity was abrogated. The second variant retained DUB activity, but failed to bind STRIPAK, a large multiprotein assembly implicated in cytoskeleton o

[Stress injuries of bone in children and adolescents].

Stress injuries of bone in childhood and adolescence are the result of an imbalance between physical stress on the growing musculoskeletal system and its intrinsic resilience. Children who are very active in sports are particularly affected. The classical stress injuries mainly occur in the area of the lower leg, the metatarsus and the lower lumbar spine due to the disproportionate load on healthy bone; however, overuse syndromes can also occur in the area of the growth plates and possibly lead to growth plate disorders. The anamnesis usually shows stress-related pain that has existed for a lo

Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles and Curcumin Equally Promote Neuronal Branching Morphogenesis in the Absence of Nerve Growth Factor in PC12 Cells.

Regeneration of the damaged neurons in neurological disorders and returning their activities are two of the main purposes of neuromedicine. Combination use of specific nanoformulations with a therapeutic compound could be a good candidate for neuroregeneration applications. Accordingly, this research aims to utilize the combination of curcumin, as a neurogenesis agent, with dextran-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) to evaluate their effects on PC12 cellsʹ neuronal branching morphogenesis in the absence of nerve growth factor. Therefore, the effects of each component al

Estrogen-Induced Uterine Vasodilation in Pregnancy and Preeclampsia.

Normal pregnancy is associated with dramatically increased estrogen biosynthesis whose role is believed to raise uterine blood flow to facilitate the bi-directional maternal-fetal exchanges of gases (O2 and CO2), to deliver nutrients, and exhaust wastes to support fetal development and survival. Constrained uterine blood flow in pregnancy is a leading cause of preeclampsia with fetal growth restriction, rendering investigations of uterine hemodynamics to hold a high promise to inform pathways as targets for therapeutic interventions for preeclampsia. The mechanisms of estrogen-induced uterine

Thyroid and Eye: Where They Meet in Clinical Practice.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid Hormones (TH) are essential for normal growth, development and continued optimal function of most of the body organs including the eye. TH signaling plays a central role in the regulation of retinal development and maturation. Deficiency in TH during fetal and early postnatal development impairs growth of the eye and proliferation of all retinal cell types. The present article reviews the most important topics of the different derangements in thyroid function and structure and its relation with eye diseases. METHODS: A literature search strategy was conducted for all Englis

[Noonan syndrome: genetic and clinical update and treatment options].

Noonan syndrome (NS) is a relatively common genetic condition characterised by short stature, congenital heart defects, and distinctive facial features. NS and other clinically overlapping conditions such as NS with multiple lentigines (formerly called LEOPARD syndrome), cardiofaciocutaneous syndrome, or Costello syndrome, are caused by mutations in genes encoding proteins of the RAS-MAPKinases pathway. Because of this shared mechanism, these conditions have been collectively termed «RASopathies». Despite the recent advances in molecular genetics, nearly 20% of patients still lack a genetic ca

Prospect of early vascular tone and satellite cell modulations on white striping muscle myopathy.

Polyphasic myodegeneration potentially causes severe physiological and metabolic disorders in the breast muscle of fast-growing broiler chickens. To date, the etiology of recent muscle myopathies, such as the white striping (WS) phenotype, is still unknown. White striping-affected breast meats compromise the water holding capacity and predispose muscle to poor vascular tone, leading to the deterioration of meat qualities. Herein, this review article provides insight on the complexities around chicken breast myopathies: (i) the etiologies of WS occurrence in chicken; (ii) the metabolic changes

TUBB Variants Underlying Different Phenotypes Result in Altered Vesicle Trafficking and Microtubule Dynamics.

Tubulinopathies are rare neurological disorders caused by alterations in tubulin structure and function, giving rise to a wide range of brain abnormalities involving neuronal proliferation, migration, differentiation and axon guidance. TUBB is one of the ten β-tubulin encoding genes present in the human genome and is broadly expressed in the developing central nervous system and the skin. Mutations in TUBB are responsible for two distinct pathological conditions: the first is characterized by microcephaly and complex structural brain malformations and the second, also known as "circumferential

Long-term physical and neurodevelopmental outcomes after antenatal betamethasone administration for congenital heart block prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital heart block (CHB) is associated with a mortality rate of 20% and requires a pacemaker in 70% of cases. Steroids can reduce morbidity and prevent the onset of CHB but may have adverse effects on growth and neurodevelopment. This study aimed to clarify the long-term effects of antenatal betamethasone administration on growth and neurodevelopment. METHODS: The subjects were children with a high risk of CHB due to a high level of maternal anti-SSA/Ro antibody or a maternal history of a previous delivery of a offspring with CHB to whom antenatal betamethasone was administe

Choroidal Neovascularization: Mechanisms of Endothelial Dysfunction.

Many conditions affecting the heart, brain, and even the eyes have their origins in blood vessel pathology, underscoring the role of vascular regulation. In age-related macular degeneration (AMD), there is excessive growth of abnormal blood vessels in the eye (choroidal neovascularization), eventually leading to vision loss due to detachment of retinal pigmented epithelium. As the advanced stage of this disease involves loss of retinal pigmented epithelium, much less attention has been given to early vascular events such as endothelial dysfunction. Although current gold standard therapy using

Sleep and the GH/IGF-1 axis: Consequences and countermeasures of sleep loss/disorders.

This article presents an up-to-date review of the state-of-the-art knowledge regarding the effect of sleep on the anabolic growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH/IGF-1) axis. This axis is involved in learning and memory and neuroprotection at the central level, and in the crosstalk between sleep and the immune system, with respect to its anti-inflammatory properties. We also aim to provide insight into the consequences of sleep loss on cognitive capacities in healthy individuals and patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), regarding the mechanistic association with the GH/IGF-1 ax
