Supervising Employees With Criminal History: An Exploratory Study of Manager Strategies and Perceptions.

This study examined supervisory strategies for employees with criminal history from the perspective of supervisors with experience in overseeing formerly incarcerated employees. The primary goal of the study was to determine strategies used by supervisors that can be integrated into management training and disseminated to employers interested in hiring individuals with criminal history. For that purpose, 10 semistructured interviews were conducted with supervisors at Pioneer Human Services (Washington State, USA), a large nonprofit social enterprise that operates businesses employing justice i

History of pancreatic surgery in Japan: Respect to the Japanese pioneers of pancreatic surgery.

The first report of pancreatoduodenectomy was the abstract of Japan Surgical Society in 1946 by Kuru, followed by a publication by Yoshioka (Geka, 1950). The first report of total pancreatectomy was done by Honjo in 1950 (Shujutsu). Thus, the history of pancreatic surgery in Japan dawned in the 1950s. From 1970 to 1980, the American surgeon Fortner had reported the drastic concept of regional pancreatectomy with extensive dissection of vessels and connective tissues around the pancreas. A lot of Japanese surgeons were influenced by this concept and attempted to perform the extensive surgery of

The "discovery" of lipid droplets: A brief history of organelles hidden in plain sight.

Mammalian lipid droplets (LDs), first described as early as the 1880s, were virtually ignored for more than 100 years. Between 1991 and the early 2000s, however, a series of discoveries and conceptual breakthroughs led to a resurgent interest in obesity as a disease, in the metabolism of intracellular triacylglycerol (TAG), and in the physical locations of LDs as cellular structures with their associated proteins. Insights included the recognition that obesity underlies major chronic diseases, that appetite is hormonally controlled, that hepatic steatosis is not a benign finding, and that diab

Oral premedication in patients with a history suggesting hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast media.

INTRODUCTION: Iodinated contrast media (ICM) are pharmaceuticals widely used in diagnostic procedures. Adverse effects associated with their administration are quite frequent and mostly mild. However, they raise concerns in patients and doctors in the context of their future use. AIM: To determine efficacy of premedication before medical procedures with the use of iodinated contrast media in patients with a history suggesting a hypersensitivity reaction after their past use. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Out of 152 patients consulted due to adverse reactions after ICM (85 women and 67 men, aged 43-9

Obstetric History and Risk of Short Cervix in Women with a Prior Preterm Birth.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the relationship between obstetric history and incidence of short cervical length (CL) at <24 weeks gestational age (GA) in women with a prior spontaneous preterm birth (PTB). STUDY DESIGN: Women with a singleton gestation and a history of spontaneous PTB on progesterone who received prenatal care at a single center from 2011 to 2016 were included. Those who did not undergo screening or had a history-indicated cerclage were excluded. The associations between short CL (<25 mm) before 24 weeks and obstetrical factors including: number of prior PTBs, history of term

Uterine rupture in patients with a history of multiple curettages: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Uterine rupture is a serious obstetric emergency, a severe event, and a serious threat to maternal and fetal life. It is a rare and not well characterized by the fact that multiple operations of uterine cavities contribute to uterine rupture during pregnancy. Atypical uterine rupture is easily misdiagnosed as other obstetric or surgical diseases. In current guidelines, abdominocentesis is a contraindication for late pregnancy. Therefore, the cases presented in this report provide new ideas for clinical diagnosis and treatment of uterine rupture. CASE SUMMARY: Case 1, a 34-year-old

Landing Stiffness Between Individuals With and Without a History of Low Back Pain.

CONTEXT: Reduced spinal stabilization, delayed onset of muscle activation, and increased knee joint stiffness have been reported in individuals with a history of low back pain (LBP). Biomechanical adaptations resulting from LBP may increase the risk for future injury due to suboptimal loading of the lower-extremity or lumbar spine. Assessing landing mechanics in these individuals could help identify which structures might be susceptible to future injury. OBJECTIVE: To compare vertical and joint stiffness of the lower-extremity and lumbar spine between individuals with and without a previous h

The natural history of multiple osteochondromas in a large Italian cohort of pediatric patients.

IMPORTANCE: Multiple osteochondromas is a rare hereditary skeletal disorder, characterized by bony protrusions arising from growth plates on long bones during skeletal development. The disorder frequently leads to diminished stature, deformities and functional limitations. Understanding of the natural history of multiple osteochondromas and its evolution in children and adolescents is limited. OBJECTIVE: To provide valuable information on the natural history of multiple osteochondromas, to inform recommendations for treatment and prevent impairments caused by osteochondromas. DESIGN: This re

Natural History of a Patient with Sacral Chordoma: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Chordomas are rare, slow-growing, locally aggressive, malignant tumors of the spine. Chordomas are conventionally treated with surgical resection with or without radiation. There is an absence of literature documenting the natural history of a primary sacral chordoma. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 65-year-old man presented with rectal pain, constipation, urinary and fecal incontinence, S1 radiculopathy, and a palpable rectal mass. A needle biopsy confirmed the pathologic diagnosis of sacral chordoma. The patient declined to have surgery because of the surgical risks involved. He was managed

Pulmonary granulomas in a patient with positive ANCA and history of tuberculosis: case report.

BACKGROUND: Granulomatous polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare multisystem autoimmune disease of unknown aetiology that is pathologically characterised by necrotising vasculitis, tissue necrosis and granulomatous inflammation, typically in the presence of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). However infectious diseases may induce high titre ANCA and mimic vasculitis. Tuberculosis may share many clinical features with GPA including fever, arthralgia, granulomatous inflammation and pulmonary lesions and patients. CASE PRESENTATION: A 39 year old patient was admitted with ocular irritation and

[Gene-based therapies of spinal muscular atrophy: a piece of history of medicine].

It is worth stating that a generation is needed to bring about a new family of drugs. After the deciphering of the genetic cause in 1995, two innovative classes of therapeutics are now available for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA): the repeated administration of antisens oligonucleotides and the one-shot administration of a scAAV9-SMN as a gene therapy. By addressing the genetic mechanisms of the disease, these drugs fundamentally change its course. These major advances in an extremely severe disease, often fatal before the age of 18 months in the type 1 form (50% of patients), pave the way for

The History of Deferiprone (L1) and the Paradigm of the Complete Treatment of Iron Overload in Thalassaemia.

Deferiprone (L1) was originally designed, synthesised and screened in vitro and in vivo in 1981 by Kontoghiorghes G. J. following his discovery of the novel alpha-ketohydroxypyridine class of iron chelators (1978-1981), which were intended for clinical use. The journey through the years for the treatment of thalassaemia with L1 has been a very difficult one with an intriguing turn of events, which continue until today. Despite many complications, such as the extensive use of L1 suboptimal dose protocols, the aim of chelation therapy-namely, the complete removal of excess iron in thalassaemia m

A case of lip squamous cell carcinoma with a familial history of Xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum is an orphan hereditary photosensitive human disorder that is recognized by the development of skin lesions in sun-exposed regions of the body due to severe photosensitivity. Patients with this condition have an abnormal DNA repair process due to a genetic mutation. Xeroderma pigmentosum is considered as a risk factor of cancer since the affected population may develop various cutaneous cancers including both melanoma and non-melanoma cutaneous malignancies even at a younger age than the general population. This risk concerns also asymptomatic heterozygote individuals. He

A family history of SCID and unrevealing WES: An approach to management and guidance of patients.

Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) is a genetically heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by severe T cell lymphopenia and defective T and B cell function. Without prompt diagnosis and early intervention, patients with SCID typically die from infection within the first year of life. Advances in molecular genetics have led to rapid and efficient diagnosis of SCID cases, particularly when paired with newborn screening. However, some cases remain unsolved, and this is of particular relevance to families that plan to have more children. Here we report a patient who died from complica

History and Epidemiology of Bacillary Dysentery in Korea: from Korean War to 2017.

Dysentery has been a major illness for a long time in our country. During Korean war, bacillary dysentery was common illness as well as other infectious diseases such as typhus fever, and Shigella flexneri occupied more than 90% of the cases reported by UN forces. After the war, the Korean National Institute of Health began to monitor the disease as a legal communicable disease. The incidence of dysentery decreased gradually from 1960 through 1980s and consistently low until 1997, and common serotype has changed from S. flexneri to S. sonnei. However, a nationwide epidemic of dysentery occurre
