Changes in Periprosthetic Bone Mineral Density Following Arthroplasty: An In-Depth Review and Current Perspectives.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Arthroplasty (e.g., TKA, UKA, THA) is a gold-standard treatment for end-stage joint diseases, yet it often leads to periprosthetic bone mineral density (BMD) loss, increasing risks of implant loosening and fractures. This review aims to (1) evaluate current methods for measuring periprosthetic BMD, (2) analyze factors contributing to BMD reduction, and (3) discuss pharmacological interventions to mitigate bone loss, thereby improving postoperative outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies highlight three primary BMD assessment tools: DEXA (widely used but limited by artifac

Full-body resistance training promotes greater fat mass loss than a split-body routine in well-trained males: A randomized trial.

While significant progress has been made in understanding the resistance training (RT) strategy for muscle hypertrophy increase, there remains limited knowledge about its impact on fat mass loss. This study aimed to investigate whether full-body is superior to split-body routine in promoting fat mass loss among well-trained males. Twenty-three participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: full-body (n = 11, training muscle groups 5 days per week) and split-body (n = 12, training muscle groups 1 day per week). Both groups performed a weekly set volume-matched condition (75 sets/week, 8-

New Challenges: Use and Interpretation of Radius Bone Mineral Density.

CONTEXT: It is unknown if isolated low bone mineral density (BMD) "osteoporosis" at the radius is associated with increased fracture risk, not only at the wrist but elsewhere, and whether it reflects more generalized skeletal fragility. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to review the association of radius BMD and fracture risk, the epidemiology of wrist fractures, isolated osteoporosis at the radius, and the concordance between radial BMD and femoral neck BMD. METHODS: We completed a narrative literature review on radius BMD and fracture risk and current recommendations for measurement of radial BM

Association between urinary methylparaben level and bone mineral density in children and adolescents aged 8-19 years.

Previous epidemiological study has explored a positive association between methylparaben (Mep) and bone mineral density (BMD) in adults. Evidence linking Mep and BMD in children and adolescents is very limited. This study examined the association between Mep and BMD in children and adolescents aged 8-19 years. In this cross-sectional study, 1830 children and adolescents aged 8-19 years from NHANES 2011-2016 were analyzed. Mep was ln-transformed for analysis of the skewed distribution. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate Mep's association with BMD (containing total BM

Femoral bone mineral density at the time of hip fracture is higher in women with versus without type 2 diabetes mellitus: a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: To compare femoral bone mineral density (BMD) levels in hip-fracture women with versus without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We hypothesized that BMD levels could be higher in the women with T2DM than in controls and we aimed to quantify the BMD discrepancy associated with the presence of T2DM. METHODS: At a median of 20 days after the occurrence of an original hip fracture due to fragility we measured BMD by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at the non-fractured femur. RESULTS: We studied 751 women with subacute hip fracture. Femoral BMD was significantly higher in the 111 women

Association between age at menarche and bone mineral density in postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Age at menarche (AAM) directly affects female estrogen levels, which play a vital role in bone metabolism. The exact relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and AAM remains controversial. Thus, this study aimed to determine the association between AAM and lumbar spine (LS) BMD in postmenopausal women. METHODS: Our data were based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018. AAM was divided into three categories including ≤ 12, 13-15, and ≥ 16 years, and the ≤ 12 years old category was used as the reference group. To examine the association be

Impact of 24-Hr Diet and Physical Activity Control on Short-Term Precision Error of Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry Physique Assessment.

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a popular technique used to quantify physique in athletic populations. Due to biological variation, DXA precision error (PE) may be higher than desired. Adherence to standardized presentation for testing has shown improvement in consecutive-day PE. However, the impact of short-term diet and physical activity standardization prior to testing has not been explored. This warrants investigation, given the process may reduce variance in total body water and muscle solute, both of which can have high daily flux amongst athletes. Twenty (n = 10 males, n = 10

Plasma neurofilament light levels associate with muscle mass and strength in middle-aged and older adults: findings from GenoFit.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to enhance diagnostic measures for sarcopenia have led to an increased focus on the screening utility of blood-based biomarkers. In this regard, circulating neurofilament light chain (NfL) levels are a potent indicator of axonal damage and have been linked with several neurological disorders. However, despite the strong neurogenic contribution to skeletal muscle health, no studies have explored the relevance of NfL concentrations to sarcopenia. With that in mind, this study aimed to examine the association between plasma NfL concentration and sarcopenic domains. METHODS: T

Forearm Fractures in Overweight-Obese Children and Adolescents: A Matter of Bone Density, Bone Geometry or Body Composition?

Forearm fractures in children and adolescents are associated with increased body mass index (BMI). This bone site is non-weight-bearing and therefore is appropriate to explore the effect of BMI on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone geometry, avoiding the confounding effect of increased weight-associated mechanical loading. The aim of this review was to summarize available evidence on bone indices and body composition assessed by peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) or dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the forearm level in overweight (Ow) or obese (Ob) subjects. We conducted a r

Impaired Bone Microarchitecture at Distal Radial and Tibial Reference Locations Is Not Related to Injury Site in Athletes With Bone Stress Injury.

BACKGROUND: Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are common sports injuries that occur because of an imbalance between microdamage accumulation and removal through bone remodeling. The underlying bone phenotype has been assumed to be a contributing factor. However, the bone microarchitecture of athletes with BSI is not well characterized, and no study has investigated whether impaired bone microarchitecture is associated with bone composition or anatomic site of injury. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This cross-sectional study characterizes the bone microarchitecture at distal radial and tibial reference locatio

Should Q-CT Be the Gold Standard for Detecting Spinal Osteoporosis?

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective comparative study. OBJECTIVE: Refinement of the guidelines for screening of osteoporosis and considering quantitative computed tomography (Q-CT) for detecting spinal osteoporosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spinal osteoporosis is often underestimated and under-evaluated due to either lack of availability of the diagnostic modality or lack of awareness about the possibility of overestimation by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. There is a need for reconsidering osteoporosis evaluation with a site specific and patient specific inclination. METHODS: Post-menopaus

Bone Mineral Density and Serum 25OHD in Children and Adolescents With Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Low bone mass is one of the complications of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). However, a study focusing on the low bone mass in children and adolescents with JIA in Southeast Asian countries is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the bone mineral density (BMD) of Thai patients with JIA and identify factors correlated with BMD. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary-care center. The BMD of the lumbar spines (BMDLS) and the total body (BMDTB) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Thirty-eight patients were enrolled between July 2015 and January 2016.
