Detection and kinetics of mucosal pathogenic bacteria binding with polysaccharides.

The detection and kinetics of mucosal pathogenic bacteria binding on polysaccharide ligands were studied using a surface plasmon resonance biosensor. The kinetic model applied curve-fitting to the experimental surface plasmon resonance sensorgrams to evaluate the binding interactions. The kinetic parameters for the mucosal pathogenic bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonasfluorescens, Serratia marcescens) with the alginate ligand were determined from a kinetic model. In addition, the binding interactions of the mucosal pathogenic bacteria with polysaccharide binding pairs (Pseudomonas ae

The antibacterial capabilities of alginate encapsulated lemon essential oil nanocapsules against multi-drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii.

Controlling microbial pollutants is a significant public health concern as they cause several chronic microbial infections and illnesses. In recent years, essential oils (EOs) have become intriguing alternatives for synthetic antimicrobials due to their biodegradability, natural source extraction, and strong antibacterial properties. The bactericidal properties of alginate containing lemon essential oil were examined in this investigation. Following the screening of the MDR strains, the morphological properties of the produced nanoparticles were examined using SEM, DLS, and FTIR. Additionally,

Removal of phosphate from aqueous solution using magnesium-alginate/chitosan modified biochar microspheres derived from Thalia dealbata.

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using magnesium-alginate/chitosan modified biochar microspheres to enhance removal of phosphate from aqueous solution. The introduction of MgCl2 substantially increased surface area of biochar (116.2m(2)g(-1)), and both granulation with alginate/chitosan and modification with magnesium improved phosphate sorption on the biochars. Phosphate sorption on the biochars could be well described by a simple Langmuir model, and the MgCl2-alginate modified biochar microspheres exhibited the highest phosphate sorption capacity (up to 46.56mg

Alginate dressings for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers and pressure injuries, are localised areas of injury to the skin or the underlying tissue, or both. Dressings are widely used to treat pressure ulcers and there are many options to choose from including alginate dressings. A clear and current overview of current evidence is required to facilitate decision-making regarding dressing use for the treatment of pressure ulcers. This review is part of a suite of Cochrane reviews investigating the use of dressings in the treatment of pressure ulcers. Each review will focus on a part

Terminal sterilization of alginate hydrogels: efficacy and impact on mechanical properties.

Terminal, or postprocessing, sterilization of composite biomaterials is crucial for their use in wound healing and tissue-engineered devices. Recent research has focused on optimizing traditional biomaterial formulations to create better products for commercial and academic use which incorporate hydrophobic compounds or secondary gel networks. To use a hydrogel in a clinical setting, terminal sterilization is necessary to ensure patient safety. Lyophilization, gamma-irradiation, and ethylene oxide treatment all have negative consequences when applied to alginate scaffolds for clinical use. Her

Modified PVA-alginate encapsulated photocatalyst ferro photo gels for Cr(VI) reduction.

In this study magnetic separable photocatalyst beads containing maghemite nanoparticles (γ-Fe(2)O(3)) in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer were prepared and used in the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in an aqueous solution under sunlight. The unique superparamagnetic property of the photocatalyst contributed by the γ-Fe(2)O(3) and robust property of PVA polymer allow the magnetic beads to be recovered easily and reused for at least 7 times without washing. The concentration of γ-Fe(2)O(3) was varied from 8% (v/v) to 27% (v/v) and the results revealed that the beads with 8% (v/v) γ-Fe(2)O(3) exhi

Immobilization of Acetobacter sp. CCTCC M209061 for efficient asymmetric reduction of ketones and biocatalyst recycling.

BACKGROUND: The bacterium Acetobacter sp. CCTCC M209061 is a promising whole-cell biocatalyst with exclusive anti-Prelog stereoselectivity for the reduction of prochiral ketones that can be used to make valuable chiral alcohols such as (R)-4-(trimethylsilyl)-3-butyn-2-ol. Although it has promising catalytic properties, its stability and reusability are relatively poor compared to other biocatalysts. Hence, we explored various materials for immobilizing the active cells, in order to improve the operational stability of biocatalyst. RESULTS: It was found that Ca-alginate give the best immobiliz

Reflux and cough.

Reflux is a significant contributor to cough in otolaryngology practice; cough is just one marker of its many negative effects on the upper aerodigestive tract. Reflux causes cough both by direct irritation/inflammation and by increasing sensitivities to other noxious agents. Detailed and diligent clinical evaluation, including laryngoscopy, is useful in advancing the working diagnosis of reflux-associated cough. Supplemental testing, including impedance monitoring of esophageal refluxate, can be important to evaluate for both acidic and nonacidic reflux exposure. The mainstay of treatment con

The impact of Manuka honey dressings on the surface pH of chronic wounds.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Chronic non healing wounds have an elevated alkaline environment. The acidic pH of Manuka honey makes it a potential treatment for lowering wound pH, but the duration of effect is unknown. Lowering wound pH can potentially reduce protease activity, increase fibroblast activity and increase oxygen release consequently aiding wound healing. The aim of this study was to analyse the changes in surface pH and size of non healing ulcers following application of Manuka honey dressing after 2 weeks. The study was an open label, non randomised prospective study. Patients presenting consecutively with n

Synthesis and rheological properties of responsive thickeners based on polysaccharide architectures.

New thermothickening copolymers were synthesized by grafting responsive poly(ethylene oxide-co-propylene oxide) [PEPO] onto three different polysaccharide backbones: carboxymethylcellulose [CMC], alginate [ALG], and carboxylated dextran [DEX]. The coupling reaction between carboxylic groups of biopolymers and the terminal amine of PEPO was activated at low temperature ( T < 10 degrees C) in water by using carbodiimide and N-hydroxysuccinimide. In these conditions it was shown that the formation of amide bonds strongly depends on the concentration of reactive groups, which is limited by the vis

[Efficacy and tolerance of Algosteril (calcium alginate) versus Jelonet (paraffin gauze) in the treatment of scalp graft donor sites in children. Results of a randomized study].

Split skin graft is frequently needed in the treatment of burned patients. Scalp is often free of burns. Due to its good skin quality and important surface, scalp is a very interesting skin donor site, specially in case of children. A controlled, randomised clinical trial was carried out in 10 French Plastic Surgery or Burns Units. It assessed the efficacy and the acceptability of calcium alginate dressing (Algosteril) versus paraffin gauze dressing (Jelonet) in the treatment of scalp donor sites in children. 67 children (mean age 54 months) entered the study, 34 in the alginate group and 33 i

Ionotropic gelation: encapsulation of indomethacin in calcium alginate gel discs.

Ionotropic gelation by divalent metal interaction was employed as an approach to design a modified release multiple-unit oral drug-delivery system. This process was achieved by crosslinking an indomethacin-sodium alginate dispersion with calcium ions to induce the spontaneous formation of indomethacin-calcium alginate gel discs. A significant part in the validation of the integrity of the system, involved a preformulatory stage for the optimization of the curing conditions and potency determination of the gel discs. A three-phase approach was developed to establish the critical curing paramete

Evaluation of calcium alginate-tipped aluminum swabs transported in Culturettes containing ampules of 2-sucrose phosphate medium for recovery of Chlamydia trachomatis.

Two calcium alginate-tipped wire swab specimens were obtained from 94 men and 106 women attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic. One swab was extracted thoroughly in 2-sucrose phosphate (2SP) immediately after obtaining the specimen. The second swab was returned to the Culturette cylinder (Marion Scientific, Kansas City, MO), and the ampule containing 2SP was crushed to moisten the swab during transport to the laboratory. After receipt in the laboratory, the swab was removed from the Culturette and extracted into 2 mL of 2SP. Both specimens then were cultured for the presence of Chlamy

EFFECT OF SODIUM ALGINATE ON STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS DURING MILD HEATING AND FREEZING.

The effects of sodium alginate on Staphyiococcus aureus 196 exposed to mild heating or to freezing at -21 C were studied. The addition of sodium alginate to a diluent appeared to confer some protection of viable cells during mild heating. The effect of the presence of sodium alginate in the suspending media during freezing was less clear. There was a slight trend, not statistically significant, for greater reduction in numbers of viable cells at the low temperature when 4% alginate was present in phosphate buffer. Results indicated that the value of sodium alginate in controlling this food-poi
