Finite Element Analysis of Different Titanium Plates for Internal Fixation of Fractures of the Mandibular Condylar Neck.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study is to compare the performance of 4 titanium miniplates (alpha, kappa, rhomboidal, and trapezoidal) used for the fixation of condylar neck fractures by implementing computational finite element analysis. METHODS: Three-dimensional models of the plates were used to reduce a virtually created condylar neck fracture in a mandible obtained from a computed tomography scan of a healthy adult. The developed models were analyzed, making use of the finite element method under 2 loading scenarios: a reduced postoperative bite force of 135 N and a clenching force

[The effect of an angle-stable plate-screw connection and various screw diameters on the stability of plate osteosynthesis. An FE model study].

In a finite element model of a human femur with an attached stainless steel six-hole plate exposed to a load equivalent to that set up by standing on one leg, pressures on the face of the screw holes, bending stresses in the screws, and axial bone stresses in the mid-plate transverse section were determined. The calculations were performed for minor thread diameters of 3 mm, 5 mm and 8 mm. Further calculations were done assuming a fixator-like rigid screw-plate connection. As a model of a fracture a medial bone defect was chosen. The results show a definitive influence of the screw diameter an

3D printed patient-specific fixation plates for the treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis: Topology optimization vs. conventional design.

Orthopedic plates are commonly used after osteotomies for temporary fixation of bones. Patient-specific plates have recently emerged as a promising fixation device. However, it is unclear how various strategies used for the design of such plates perform in comparison with each other. Here, we compare the biomechanical performance of 3D printed patient-specific bone plates designed using conventional computer-aided design (CAD) techniques with those designed with the help of topology optimization (TO) algorithms, focusing on cases involving slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). We establish…

Investigation of dynamic hip plate screw systems in different lengths with finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Dynamic systems aim to create an environment that encourages bone healing while minimizing stress shielding, which is a phenomenon where the bone loses density due to a lack of stress during the healing process. In this study, it was aimed that the stress distributions on plates of different lengths in the dynamic hip plate screw system were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study, the human proximal femur model (3-D) obtained from computerized tomography was transferred to Finite Element Analysis (FEA) computer simulation. Plates with 2-4-6 holes were placed on the knit

Finite element model with realistic bone geometries for the optimal design of internal fixation during the fibula healing process.

A finite element model with realistic bone geometries is developed to design optimal internal fixation during the fibula healing process in this study. The effect of bone plate parameters on fibula fracture healing is studied. The relationship between differences in plate length, thickness and working length, and bone healing performance is focused. The optimal combination form of the bone plate parameters was selected by the orthogonal experimental design and fracture block strain to achieve bone healing maximize the performance. The model results show that the maximum equivalent force of the

Finite element biomechanical evaluation of internal fixation methods for metacarpal shaft fractures under multiple factors.

Metacarpal shaft fractures often require surgical correction of displacement, angulation, or rotational deformities to restore function. Kirschner wires (K-wires), plates, and intramedullary screw fixation each have advantages and limitations. However, inconsistent biomechanical evidence in existing studies has precluded definitive conclusions regarding the optimal fixation technique. This studycompared K-wires, plates, and intramedullary screw for metacarpal shaft fractures using finite element analysis (FEA). In normal bone, intramedullary screw matched plate stability under low loads but wer

The effect of rapamycin on bone growth in rabbits.

mTOR is a nutrient-sensing protein kinase that regulates numerous cellular processes. Our prior studies using the mTOR inhibitor, rapamycin, indicate an important role for mTOR in chondrogenesis. We extended our observations to a physiological, in vivo model of bone growth, direct infusion of rapamycin into the proximal tibial growth plates of rabbits. Rapamycin or DMSO vehicle was infused directly into growth plates by an osmotic minipump for 8 weeks. Tibial growth was followed radiographically. At the end of the experiment, growth plates were recovered for histological analysis. Six animals

Locking versus nonlocking palmar plate fixation of distal radius fractures.

This study compared functional and radiological outcomes after treatment of extension-type distal radius fractures with conventional titanium nonlocking T-plates or titanium 1.5-mm locking plates. A total of 60 patients were included and followed for 4 to 7 years after receiving nonlocking T-plates (group A; n=30) or locking plates (group B; n=30) with and without dorsal bone grafting. Bone grafting was significantly more often performed in the nonlocking group to increase dorsal fracture fixation and stability (P<.003). Pre- and postoperative and follow-up values for palmar tilt, radial incli

Predisposing factors for migration of epiphyseal screws into physis in tension band plating.

The migration of epiphyseal screws into growing physis in tension band plating is a known complication. We investigated the screw migration into physis in 10 patients (18 plates) to study the various technical details, which may have contributed to this complication. The methodology involved retrospective review of radiological records. Among these 10 affected patients, in four patients, there were eight additional tension band plates, which had remained uncomplicated ('controls') at the time when implant failure was detected. We statistically compared the length of epiphyseal screw, proximity

The acrophysis: a unifying concept for enchondral bone growth and its disorders. I. Normal growth.

In order to discuss and illustrate the common effects on normal and abnormal enchondral bone at the physes and at all other growth plates of the developing child, the term "acrophysis" is proposed. Acrophyses include the growth plates of secondary growth centers including carpals and tarsals and apophyses, and the growth plates at the non-physeal ends of small tubular bones. The last layer of development of both physes and acrophysis is the cartilaginous zone of provisional calcification (ZPC). The enchondral bone abutting the ZPC shares similar properties at physes and acrophyses, including t

Evaluation of grafts fixation techniques for temporomandibular joint reconstruction with medial femoral condyle flap: A numerical study.

Reconstruction for large-scale temporomandibular joint (TMJ) defects can be challenging. Previously, we utilized the medial femoral condyle (MFC) flap for TMJ reconstruction. However, the optimal fixation method remains uncertain. In this study, finite element analysis was used to study the effects of three different fixation types of bone graft: overlap type, bevel type, and flush type. Models of different fixation types of MFC flap were reconstructed from CT images. A standard internal fixation model for extracapsular condylar fracture was also included as a control. Displacement of bone graf
