OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognosis of traumatic eyes with no light perception post vitrectomy, and to analyze the risk factors influencing the final results.
METHODS: Five hundred and ninety nine mechanically injured eyes in 577 patients undergone vitrectomy were registered from 1999 - 2004. Thirty-eight eyes in this group showed no light perception in initial visual examination. Thirty-two eyes (84.2%) had open-globe injury, the other 6 eyes (15.8%) had closed-globe injury. Dry anophthalmic socket syndrome (DASS) is a complex and multifaceted condition that commonly affects patients who have undergone enucleation or evisceration and wear an ocular prothesis. BACKGROUND: The optic nerve and the globes are resistant to mild to moderate trauma and bilateral avulsion of the eyes is rare with only a few cases reported in the literature.
CASE: We report two cases of traumatic bilateral eye avulsion. The first case was secondary to a bear bite and was managed successfully, although the eyes were not salvageable whereas the second case which was due to physical assault expired due to associated severe head injury.

The typical signs of the postenucleation socket syndrome consist of enopthalmos, shallow lower fornix, lower lid laxity and entropion, and ptosis. It causes discomfort and can render the bearing of a prosthesis uncomfortable or impossible. The signs must be corrected in single or combined procedures. The lower fornix and the lids can be corrected with good success, enophthalmos is difficult to correct, however.

Orbital reconstruction by local flaps, distant flaps, free skin transplants or mucosal transplants, means numerous operations. Good results are often spoiled by postoperative shrinking, especially, when the patient previously had radiation. Therefore we use nowadays free flaps (forearm flap, dorsalis pedis flap) as fascio-cutaneous or fascio-mucosal flaps. By this procedure, reconstruction can be done in one or two stages and postoperative shrinking can be avoided. Our experience in 4 cases is demonstrated.

A 2-day-old boy presented with a large orbital mass, which showed radiological and pathological overlap between congenital cystic eye (CCE) and coloboma with cyst (CwC). Initially identified on prenatal imaging at 21 weeks, the patient underwent postnatal clinical and radiologic evaluation followed by histopathologic analysis of the enucleated eye. The coexistence of both anomalies within a single globe challenges the traditional view of CCE and CwC as distinct entities and supports a unifying theory of a developmental spectrum of early ocular malformations.

A woman in her late 30s presented with a 3 week history of rapidly worsening vision in her right eye.
