Eye Washing Downregulated Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 in Conjunctival Tissue Samples from Smokers.

This study aimed to (1) determine whether the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane protease serine 2 is increased in tobacco smokers, which potentially increases their susceptibility to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, and (2) assess whether eye rinsing can reduce susceptibility. This prospective study included 20 eyes of 10 smokers and 18 eyes of nine healthy non-smokers (control) for reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. This study also included 28 eyes of 14 smokers and 16 eyes of eight healthy non-smokers (

Endophthalmitis with keratitis-how to manage severe cases? : A narrative review.

Endophthalmitis secondary to microbial keratitis (MK) is a rare but devastating ophthalmic emergency characterized by diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to poor corneal clarity. Although it accounts for less than 10% of cases of exogenous endophthalmitis, it often results in poor visual outcomes or enucleation. The most common causative organisms include Staphylococcus spp., Pseudomonas spp., and Fusarium spp., with rising concerns about antimicrobial resistance. Several risk factors have been identified, including the use of topical corticosteroids, systemic immunosuppression, and fung

Report of endophthalmitis caused by Paradictyoarthrinium diffractum after plant trauma: A case involving left enucleation.

During outdoor work in April 2022, a 48-year-old man was stabbed by a tree branch and underwent intraocular foreign body extraction and repair of the scleral wound with sutures and amniotic membrane graft at a local hospital. Steroid therapy with prednisone was prescribed after a diagnosis of uveitis. Vitrectomy was performed in June 2023; a fungal culture was positive, and ITS sequencing identified the organism as Paradictyoarthrinium diffractum. Empiric antifungal therapy did not have an effect, and, because of deterioration of the condition, the left eye was enucleated in October 2023. P. d

Trabeculectomy Tenon Advancement Technique May Reduce Bleb-Related Infections.

PRCIS: Trabeculectomy using the Tenon advancement technique with a fornix-based (FB) conjunctival flap showed avascular bleb formation less frequently and had a significantly lower risk of developing bleb-related infections than trabeculectomy with a limbus-based conjunctival flap. PURPOSE: To determine whether the Tenon advancement technique for trabeculectomy with a FB conjunctival flap is effective in preventing bleb-related infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-center, nonrandomized retrospective cohort study of 998 eyes from 854 patients with glaucoma who underwent trabec

Characterization of a Haemophilus sp. isolated from a rabbit with conjunctivitis.

A case of conjunctivitis in a rabbit caused by a Haemophilus sp. is described. This was the only organism that was isolated in large numbers from the infected eye. The uninfected eye of the same rabbit contained Staphylococcus epidermidis, Corynebacterium kutscheri, Proteus mirabilis and a Neisseria sp. Effects of infection with live Haemophilus sp. isolated from the subject rabbit was studied in the eyes of rabbits and mice. Swabbing live organisms in the normal rabbit eye produced blepharitis within 48 hours. Signs of blepharitis started to disappear after 10 days without treatment. No react

Role of hemolysin BL in the pathogenesis of extraintestinal Bacillus cereus infection assessed in an endophthalmitis model.

Bacillus cereus is a rare cause of serious human infection but, paradoxically, causes one of the most severe posttraumatic or endogenous infections of the eye, endophthalmitis, which frequently results in blindness. The virulence of B. cereus endophthalmitis historically has been attributed to toxin production. We therefore sought to examine the contribution of the dermonecrotic toxin, hemolysin BL, to the pathogenesis of B. cereus infection in an endophthalmitis system that is highly amenable to study. The pathogenesis of infection resulting from intravitreal injection of 10(2) CFU of either

Vision and Ocular Surface Salvage in Extreme Postburn Cicatricial Ectropion With Infectious Exposure Keratitis.

Prevention and early management of postburn cicatricial ectropion is the best strategy to avoid ocular complications, with poor visual prognosis in extreme cases. A 51-year-old man presented with diminution of vision and absolute inability to close both eyes, 3 months after thermal burn injuries to face, upper limbs, and trunk. His best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 1/60 in BE. He had bilateral extremely severe ectropion involving both upper and lower lids with complete inability to close the eyes. The ensuing exposure keratitis developed secondary infection by Methicillin-resistant Staph

Novel technique of corneal biopsy by using a femtosecond laser in infectious ulcers.

PURPOSE: To describe femtosecond laser-assisted corneal biopsy and its use in assessing the causative organisms in 2 cases of infectious corneal ulcers. METHODS: A 27-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman, both of whom showed uncertain symptoms, repeated negative test results for infectious organisms, and after no improvement despite empirical therapy, underwent diagnostic corneal biopsy by using a femtosecond laser. A corneal flap depth of 200 microm and a diameter of 3 mm were obtained from each patient. RESULTS: The biopsy specimen from the male patient showed pseudohyphae, which led to a

Thelaziasis in an urban woman in Beijing: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Thelaziasis is a zoonotic disease mainly caused by Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida, Thelaziidae, Thelazia), which can cause mild to severe signs and lesions, such as foreign body sensation, itching, tearing, eye pain, conjunctival bleeding, conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, and even blindness. Thelaziasis cases have been reported mainly in agricultural areas and areas with high potential for contact with domestic animals [1]. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of Thelazia callipaeda infection in the right eye of a 41-year-old woman working in an office. The patient presented with pe

Orbital sparganosis in an 8-year boy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sparganosis is one of the neglected but important food-borne parasitic zoonoses, with higher prevalence in Asian countries. The infection is commonly located in the subcutaneous tissue, brain, breast, and lung, but fewer reported infections involve the eye. Because the majority of patients with sparganosis are adults, it is likely to be missed in children. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old boy presented to our clinic complaining of a painless ocular mass in his right eye for 1 month. The boy had a history of eating frogs and frog poultice applications to his eyelids. The patient wa

[Borrelia burgdorferi infection with bilateral optic neuritis and intracerebral demyelinization lesions].

In September, 1987, the authors saw a 25-year-old female patient with retinal perivasculitis, cystoid macular edema and papilledema in her right eye. The left eye was normal. Visual acuity was 0.2 (OD), 1.2 (OS). After conventional infections had been ruled out systemic methylprednisolone therapy was instituted, but the patient's condition deteriorated. In May 1988 she presented with papilledema and a "neuroretinitis"-like finding in her left eye; in her right eye advanced optic nerve atrophy; visual acuity was 0.1 (OD) and 0.07 (OS). The laboratory workup revealed an acute phase of a chronic
