A Critical Review of Scientific Data Pertaining to Dermal Exposures to Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic highly fluorinated organic compounds that have been used in a variety of industries and commercial and consumer products such as non-stick cookware, food packaging, medical devices, textiles, firefighting foam, and cosmetics and personal care products (PCPs). Due to concerns regarding the environmental and human health risk of PFAS, numerous studies have been published that investigated topics such as environmental fate, oral toxicology, and potential exposure pathways and routes. Few studies have characterized dermal exposure and uptake

Hybrid Feature Learning for Wearable Stress Detection: Combining Domain Knowledge with Supervised Deep Learning.

Accurate stress monitoring is critical for high-risk professions like firefighting, yet existing wearable solutions face challenges balancing accuracy with practical usability. While electrodermal activity (EDA) offers a non-invasive, single-sensor approach, current automated feature extraction methods fail to capture stress-discriminative patterns effectively. We developed a hybrid stress detection pipeline combining 20 hand-crafted physiological features with 32 deep-learned features from a supervised convolutional autoencoder. Unlike traditional unsupervised approaches optimized solely for

Assessing the public perceptions of treated wastewater reuse: opportunities and implications for urban communities in developing countries.

Wastewater reuse has become an integral part of Integrated Water Resources Management and thus plays a role in securing the water needs for future generations. This study aimed at determining the perceptions of Canaanland, an emerging urban community in Ogun State, Nigeria, on treated wastewater reuse for several purposes. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to the city residents (n = 244). Findings revealed that the city was aware of the economic and environmental benefits of wastewater reuse but would prefer reuse schemes that involved less human contact such as flushing

Fatal work injuries involving natural disasters, 1992-2006.

OBJECTIVE: Although a goal of disaster preparedness is to protect vulnerable populations from hazards, little research has explored the types of risks that workers face in their encounters with natural disasters. This study examines how workers are fatally injured in severe natural events. METHODS: A classification structure was created that identified the physical component of the disaster that led to the death and the pursuit of the worker as it relates to the disaster. Data on natural disasters from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries for the years 1992 through 2006 were analyzed. R

First responders' experiences and training needs at the scene of a suspected suicide in Ireland: A mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: First responders are categorised as those who are the first to respond to emergency calls and attend the site of an emergency. They include, but are not limited to police, emergency medical technicians, firefighters, and water safety personnel. First responders play a critical role in suicide postvention, supporting those bereaved by suicide and preventing adverse outcomes. However, many responders feel uncertain about how to effectively support those bereaved by suicide and often lack formal postvention training. This study aimed to explore and understand the experiences and train…

Comparing the molecular correlates of PTSD in first responders and the broader molecular PTSD literature: a hybrid review.

First responders are trained civilian professionals, including firefighters, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and frontline medical workers, who have a vocational duty and are expected to respond in person to emergency situations. The chronic exposure to adverse traumatic events while working with public health and safety can lead to the clinical presentation of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which also occurs in other trauma-exposed populations such as military personnel, veterans, refugees, and individuals who experience interpersonal violence. Examining epigenetic and tr…

The Mediterranean lifestyle (MEDLIFE) index and metabolic syndrome in a non-Mediterranean working population.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The Mediterranean lifestyle (MEDLIFE), as an overall lifestyle pattern, may be associated with a lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome. We assessed the association of a validated MEDLIFE index with metabolic syndrome and its components in a non-Mediterranean working population. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted at baseline among 249 US career firefighters in Feeding America's Bravest 2016-2018. The MEDLIFE index consisted of 26 items on food consumption, dietary habits, physical activity, rest, and social interactions that scored 0 or 1 point. Thus, total s…

Bronchial Reactivity and Lung Function After World Trade Center Exposure.

BACKGROUND: World Trade Center (WTC)-exposed rescue/recovery workers endured massive respiratory insult from inhalation of particulate matter and gases, resulting in respiratory symptoms, loss of lung function, and, for many, bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR). The persistence of respiratory symptoms and lung function abnormalities has been well-documented, whereas persistence of BHR has not been investigated. METHODS: A total of 173 WTC-exposed firefighters with bronchial reactivity measured within 2 years after September 11, 2001 (9/11) (baseline methacholine challenge test), were reevaluated …

'A successful re-blocking project is when the government works hand in hand with the community': Factors determining the longevity of re-blocking projects for fire-risk reduction.

UNLABELLED: Informal settlements are highly vulnerable to fires, due to housing materials, poor infrastructure, dangerous energy sources and housing densities that facilitate the spread of fires and hamper firefighting. Re-blocking aims to reduce fire risk by spatially reconfiguring and de-densifying settlements and upgrading services. However, re-blocked settlements often re-densify, potentially undermining long-term risk reduction benefits. Using case studies of two re-blocked informal settlements, this study aims to explore informal settlement dwellers' perspectives on re-blocking intervent

A hidden artefact: how surfactants can distort the results of springtail reproduction tests.

Soils are exposed to multiple substance groups, including surfactants, which directly enter soils when they are used as additives in firefighting liquids or pesticide mixtures due to their surface tension-lowering properties. The impact of chemicals on soil health is often tested with the springtail reproduction test. We tested the effects of the trisiloxane Break-Thru® S 301 on the reproduction of Folsomia candida in three soils according to Organisation for Economic Co-operaton and Development (OECD) guideline 232. Juveniles were extracted either by heat or flotation. In the latter method, r

Twenty-eight-day perfluorooctanoate exposure does not affect immune cell populations in naïve mice.

Perfluorooctanoate (C7F15CO2-, PFOA) is a perfluorinated compound widely used in the production of industrial products, such as non-stick cookware and firefighting foams. Although its production has been phased out in the United States, PFOA remains prevalent in the environment due to its persistence and resistance to degradation. As a result, trace levels of PFOA is detectable in water, soil, biota, and the general population. Environmental and toxicological concerns have emerged due to potential health risks associated with PFOA exposure, including effects on the immune system. Basic underly

Development of a prototype dry decontamination method for particulate contamination: The DryCon system.

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the development of a prototype dry decontamination system (DryCon) for use in the event of a contamination incident involving a particulate contaminant. Disrobing and showering is currently recommended almost exclusively in mass decontamination, although it may not be feasible when water is scarce, in cold weather environments, or when there may be compliance issues with the requirement to disrobe, ie, unwillingness to disrobe. During disrobing, dust particles could also re-aerosolize, leading to inhalation of contaminants. DESIGN: The DryCon prototype uses a

Giant cell interstitial pneumonia in patients without hard metal exposure: analysis of 3 cases and review of the literature.

Giant cell interstitial pneumonia is a rare lung disease and is considered pathognomonic for hard metal lung disease, although some cases with no apparent hard metal (tungsten carbide cobalt) exposure have been reported. We aimed to explore the association between giant cell interstitial pneumonia and hard metal exposure. Surgical pathology files from 2001 to 2004 were searched for explanted lungs with the histopathologic diagnosis of giant cell interstitial pneumonia, and we reviewed the associated clinical histories. Predicting resource needs for multiple and mass casualty events in combat: lessons learned from combat support hospital experience in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the number of evacuated casualties from a combat-related multiple casualty event provides an initial baseline estimate of the number of blood products required for the event. METHODS: A retrospective review of combat support hospitals' experiences in Operation Iraqi Freedom was performed, (from December 2003 to December 2004). Identified multiple casualty events were analyzed for mechanisms of injury, total number of patients arriving to the combat support hospitals, average injury severity score, operative interventions, blood product requirements, and short-t
