Age-related prevalence rates of sexual difficulties, sexual dysfunctions, and sexual distress in heterosexual women: results from an online survey in flanders.

INTRODUCTION: Although age-related prevalence rates of female sexual difficulties, i.e., difficulties with sexual desire, arousal, orgasm, or pain have occasionally been studied-with mostly inconsistent results-the age-related prevalence rates of female sexual dysfunctions, i.e., sexual difficulties that are associated with sexual distress, have not. Moreover, the association of age with sexual distress, i.e., distress due to sexual difficulties, has almost completely been neglected in epidemiological research. AIMS: The aims of the present study were to provide age-related prevalence estimat

"A man's gonna do what a man wants to do": African American and Hispanic women's perceptions about heterosexual relationships: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: HIV prevention efforts have given limited attention to the relational schemas and scripts of adult heterosexual women. These broader schemas and scripts of romantic and other sexual liaisons, partner selection, relationship dynamics, and power negotiations may help to better understand facilitators and barriers to HIV risk-reduction practices. METHODS: We conducted exploratory qualitative interviews with 60 HIV-uninfected heterosexual African-American women from rural counties in North Carolina and Alabama, and Hispanic women from an urban county in southern Florida. Data were col

Characteristics associated with HIV infection among heterosexuals in urban areas with high AIDS prevalence --- 24 cities, United States, 2006-2007.

In the United States, approximately one in three new human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections are transmitted via heterosexual contact. To monitor HIV risk behaviors and HIV prevalence among heterosexuals and other populations, CDC surveys persons in selected metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), using the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS). This report summarizes data collected from heterosexuals in 24 MSAs with a high prevalence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) that participated in NHBS during 2006-2007. Of 14,837 heterosexuals aged 18-50 years who were inte

Intervention to influence behaviors linked to risk of chronic diseases: a multisite randomized controlled trial with African-American HIV-serodiscordant heterosexual couples.

BACKGROUND: The high morbidity and mortality in African Americans associated with behavior-linked chronic diseases are well documented. METHODS: We tested the efficacy of an intervention to increase multiple health-related behaviors in African Americans. In a multisite cluster-randomized controlled trial, groups of African American human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-serodiscordant heterosexual couples in Atlanta (Georgia), Los Angeles (California), New York (New York), and Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) were allocated to an individual-focused health promotion that addressed multiple health-relat

Acceptability research on female-controlled barrier methods to prevent heterosexual transmission of HIV: Where have we been? Where are we going?

Acceptability research is an important component of any product development process. As researchers move into a new, accelerated phase of vaginal microbicide development, it is important to take stock of the acceptability research conducted to date and determine future research priorities. In this paper, we review findings from acceptability research conducted to date in four categories: hypothetical product acceptability research, existing product research (spermicide acceptability studies), acceptability research within the context of clinical trials, and postmarketing acceptability research

Virus load and risk of heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus by men with hemophilia. The Multicenter Hemophilia Cohort Study.

A high human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) load may increase the probability of HIV transmission by sexual contact, but the association of virus load of hepatitis C virus (HCV) with risk of HCV transmission is uncertain. HIV and HCV virus loads were examined in hemophilic men, as were risks of HIV and HCV transmission to their female partners in a hemophilia cohort in which most subjects are dually infected. A higher HIV load was associated with an increased risk of HIV transmission (odds ratio [OR], 1.31 per log10 increase in virus load). A higher HCV load was associated, although not signific

Sexual experiences and condom use of heterosexual, low-income African American and Hispanic youth practicing relative monogamy, serial monogamy, and nonmonogamy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To describe (a) demographic characteristics, (b) sexual history, (c) perceived HIV susceptibility, and (d) current sexual behavior, condom use, and alcohol and marijuana use of heterosexual, low-income African American and Hispanic youth categorized as relatively monogamous (n = 577), serial monogamous (n = 171), or nonmonogamous (n = 278). STUDY DESIGN: Data were drawn from personal interviews with a probability sample of low-income youth, age 15 to 24 years, conducted in Detroit in 1991. RESULTS: Many group differences were found. For example, relatively monogamo

HIV knowledge, beliefs and sexual behavior of male heterosexual drug users and non-drug users attending an HIV testing clinic in Israel.

UNLABELLED: The aim of the study was to compare HIV-related knowledge, beliefs in self-control and sexual behavior of non-drug using and drug using heterosexual men. All individuals attending an HIV testing site during a two-month period were asked to complete a questionnaire anonymously. Data for 49 drug users (DU), most of them non-injectors, were compared to that of 94 non-drug using (non-DU) men with similar education levels (high school or less). Sexual behavior items refer to previous six months. FINDINGS: HIV-related knowledge was reported correctly by the majority of men in both group

Heterosexual behavior during pregnancy and perinatal transmission of HIV-1. New York City Perinatal HIV Transmission Collaborative Study Group.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between maternal heterosexual activity during pregnancy and perinatal transmission of HIV-1. DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of 175 New York City HIV-1-seropositive women enrolled during pregnancy or immediately post-partum from 1986 to 1994 in a prospective cohort study. METHODS: Frequency of heterosexual intercourse and condom use during pregnancy was determined from self-report measures. Unprotected intercourse was defined as follows: 'none', consistent condom use or abstinence; 'moderate', inconsistent condom use and fewer than 80 episodes of int

Comparative Performance of Prostate Cancer Risk Prediction Tools in Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men vs Heterosexual Men.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of clinical models and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)-based prostate cancer (PCa) risk calculators in men who have sex with men (MSM) vs heterosexual men (HSM). MSM comprise 3%-6% of US men yet remain underrepresented in validation studies of PCa risk tools. Behavioral and anatomic factors may influence the performance of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA), digital rectal examination (DRE), and prostate MRI. METHODS: We analyzed 486 men (243 MSM, 243 HSM) undergoing prostate biopsy at a single academic center, matched by age, PSA, race/ethnicity, and MRI stat

Disclosing donor conception: a mixed methods study exploring the experience and attitudes of French sperm donor-conceived adults born within heterosexual couples.

RESEARCH QUESTION: How can the experiences and attitudes of donor-conceived people regarding the disclosure of their conception be understood, given the emphasis on openness and the ongoing challenges faced by donor-conceived families? DESIGN: A mixed-method exploratory study (March 2019 to September 2020) involving an online survey and in-depth interviews with French sperm donor-conceived adults born to heterosexual couples. The survey included 107 respondents aged 20-54 years, mostly women (86.9%) with high academic standards, informed of their conception at an average age of 18.6 (± 11.9).

A spatially dynamic agent-based model for assessing the effect of gentrification-induced migration and HIV transmission among heterosexual African American/Black women.

PURPOSE: Develop a spatially dynamic agent-based model to assess the impact of gentrification-induced migration on HIV transmission among heterosexual African American/Black women. METHODS: We simulated a population of heterosexual African American/Black adults diagnosed with or at risk for HIV in a spatially dynamic agent-based model. We included behavioral and HIV-related probabilities based on neighborhood of residence, distance to healthcare facilities from their neighborhood, and neighborhood disadvantage status. To assess the impact of gentrification, migration was implemented in the mo

Body Appreciation Matters: The Associations Between Self-Compassion, Body Appreciation, and Disordered Eating Behaviors Among Heterosexual and LGBi+ Emerging Adults in Türkiye.

OBJECTIVES: Self-compassion has been effective in the prevention and treatment of disordered eating behaviors and body image issues, which are significant public health concerns with potential psychosocial and physical consequences. Furthermore, there remains a substantial gap in the existing body of research, particularly in the context of heterosexual, lesbian, gay, and bisexual plus (LGBi+) emerging adults in Türkiye. Therefore, this study aims to explore the mediating role of body appreciation in the relationship between self-compassion and disordered eating behaviors and the moderating ro

Informal caregiver quality of life: Psychosocial and behavioral correlates of quality of life among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and heterosexual caregivers in the Women's Health Initiative.

BACKGROUND: Research has established that caregiving can have both positive and deleterious effects on caregivers' quality of life; caregivers are defined as informal caregivers caring for sick, limited, or frail family members/friends. Yet, the quality of life of female-identified caregivers who are lesbian, gay, and/or bisexual (LGB) is a relatively understudied area. Further, there is extremely limited evidence concerning the psychosocial and health behavior correlates of quality of life among LGB caregivers. Our project addresses this gap. METHODS: Data from the Women's Health Initiative

An Integrated Intervention to Reduce HIV Risk Behaviors Among Heterosexual HIV-Negative, African American Couples: Pilot Feasibility, Acceptability, and Usefulness Study.

Synergistic interactions between substance use and violence (SAVA syndemic) are strongly associated with heightened risk for HIV acquisition in the African American population. While couple-based interventions have shown efficacy among at-risk and HIV-positive serodiscordant couples, no interventions have specifically targeted SAVA syndemic risk reduction for HIV-negative, high-risk, heterosexual African American couples in the United States. This pilot study tested the feasibility, safety, and preliminary effects of an integrated sexual risk reduction intervention for African American couples

Urban, formerly incarcerated, black, heterosexual men with substance use disorders: eligible for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) but unaware of their vulnerability to HIV acquisition.

Research on incarcerated men indicates low PrEP access even though HIV disproportionately affects them. Intersecting attributes - urban, incarcerated, Black, heterosexual men with substance use diagnoses (SUDs) - improves the odds of HIV transmission/acquisition. It is crucial to determine, among "key populations," who might be eligible to take PrEP. PrEP eligibility criteria have been used inconsistently in research. This exploratory, quantitative, study uses criteria from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine eligibility: HIV-negative test and sexually act

Prevalence and determinants of heterosexual anal-intercourse among female sex workers in India: Findings from nationwide cross-sectional biological and behavioural survey.

BACKGROUND: The vulnerability of female sex workers (FSWs) to HIV infection increases if unprotected heterosexual anal intercourse (HAI) is practiced. OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of HAI among FSWs, and associated factors, and prevalence of consistent condom use (CCU) during HAI and associated factors. METHODS: Analysis of cross-sectional data from nationwide biological and behavioural survey, conducted at 73 randomly selected domains with sample size of 27,000 in India. RESULTS: A total of 25,932 FSWs were included in the analysis, after excluding 1075 (3.9%) FSWs for which the d
