BACKGROUND: Flat warts are a common presenting complaint in adolescents and adults and may be a cosmetic problem as well. Patients suffering from flat warts are often unsatisfied with conventional medical care because of adverse effects such as intolerable pain, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, or occasionally allergic contact dermatitis. To offset the possibilities of hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and scar formation, the method of auricular acupuncture was used.
METHODS: Single-blind method adopted, 60 subjects with flat warts were all outpatients and randomly allocated to a treat…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the demographics of subtalar arthritis, the response to intraarticular corticosteroid injection, and the injection c … tions. The mean duration of improvement was 1.2 years (SD +/- 0.9). Twenty patients (53%) developed hypopigmentation or subcutaneous atrophy. This complication was associated with a higher volume of injected corticosteroid per patient weight (p = 0.02) and with less efficacious injections (p = 0.04).
CONCLUSION: Subtalar arthritis in children with JIA is common. …

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by mental retardation, speech impairment, ataxia, and happy disposition with frequent smiling. AS results from the loss of expression of a maternal imprinted gene, UBE3A, mapped within 15q11-q13 region, due to different mechanisms: maternal deletion, paternal UPD, imprinting center mutation, and UBE3A mutation. Deletion AS patients may exhibit hypopigmentation of skin, eye, and hair correlating with deletion of P gene localized in the distal part of Prader-Willi (PWS)/AS region. Our patient presented developmental delay, sev…

Melanocytes represent the second most important cell type in the skin and are primarily responsible for the pigmentation of skin, hair, and eyes. Their function may be affected in a number of inherited and acquired disorders, characterized by hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, consequent aesthetic problems, and increased susceptibility to sun-mediated skin damage and photocarcinogenesis. Nevertheless, the possibility of genetically manipulating human melanocytes has been hampered so far by a number of limitations, including their resistance to retroviral infection. To address the problem o…

PURPOSE: To determine whether retinal arteriolar wall signs are associated with early age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
DESIGN: Popul … -statin users (OR 1.90, 95% CI: 1.23, 2.93). Focal arteriolar narrowing was associated with retinal hypopigmentation (OR 1.67, 95% CI: 1.02, 2.73). Syphilis is an infectious disease that has afflicted mankind for centuries, but a recent increase in worldwide incidence has been evidenced. The authors describe a patient with typical lesions of secondary syphilis and moth-eaten alopecia, whose dermoscopic examination demonstrated empty hair follicles, vellus hair, follicular hyperkeratosis, peripheral black dots, dilated and tortuous vessels, reddish brown background, and hypopigmentation of the hair shafts. Furthermore, this case presented an erythematous background more evident than previously described cases.

Chemical leukoderma denotes an acquired hypopigmentation caused by repeated exposure to specific chemical compounds simulating clinically idiopathic vitiligo. The ailment has been increasing in developing countries like India in recent years. Etiologically, a lot of chemicals, especially phenolic group, have been identified in various countries including India. The term, "chemical leukoderma syndrome" has been described to encompass all the various manifestations of chemical leukoderma. Clinical diagnostic criteria have been proposed to diagnose chemical leukoderma clinically more confidently.

A 38-year-old female of African-Caribbean origin presented with symptomatic anemia and was found to have hypoplastic thumbs and patchy hypopigmentation. Peripheral blood examination revealed pancytopenia and the bone marrow biopsy confirmed marrow hypoplasia. Fanconi anemia was later confirmed by flow cytometry and diepoxybutane testing. Treatment was limited to transfusions after development of toxicity with cyclosporine and androgen therapy. She manifested classical features of transfusion-related hemosiderosis and died 12 years after initial presentation.

Chemical peels have become established over the past 40 years as an effective outpatient method for skin rejuvenation as well as the treatment of a variety of skin conditions. Although laser skin rejuvenation has claimed much attention in recent years, phenol peels, despite problems with scarring and hypopigmentation, remains the gold standard for skin resurfacing [11], against which other methods should be evaluated [21]. We present both a theoretical overview of chemical peels and practical step-for-step instructions.

UNLABELLED: Report on a family, which presented the rare autosomal dominant transmitted, incomplete general albinism associated with autosomal recessive inherited, diffuse tapeto-retinal degeneration "sine pigmento".
SYMPTOMS: hypopigmentation of skin, eyebrows and hair, blue iris and fundus albinoticus with hypoplasia of the macula. In 3 cases additionally appeared: waxy pallor of optic disc, vascular narrowing, reflexless hypoplastic macula, pigmentless periphery, acquired blue-yellow blindness, concentric limitation of the visual field, reduced darkadaptation, abolished electroretinogram a…

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH) is a common benign leucoderma, the incidence of which increases with age. Treatment is often sought for cosmetic reasons. However, there is a paucity of information regarding effective treatments for this condition.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compile the effects of interventions for IGH.
METHODS: MEDLINE (through PubMed), Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched for articles reporting interventions for IGH, from inception up to November 2023. Reference lists of identified articles were searched for additional articles. Eligibility

Leukoderma/vitiligo is a serious pigmentary disorder that notably impairs the patient's quality of life. In particular, chemical leukoderma (CL)/vitiligo refers to acquired depigmentation of the skin induced by exposure to certain chemicals. In this review, the term "CL" is defined as the temporary, localized loss of pigmentation at the site of direct chemical exposure. When the causative chemical is removed, these skin patches undergo re-pigmentation, indicating the restoration of melanocytes to their original condition. However, when the chemical-induced skin depigmentation does not recover

A case of mosaic MTOR-associated hemimegalencephaly and hypomelanosis of Ito, died at 33 probably because of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Assessment of the variant allele fraction (VAF) in different tissues postmortem showed high variability not correlated with clinical features, representing the most detailed assessment of VAFs in different tissues to date.

BACKGROUD: Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH) is a common skin disorder with no standard treatment.
OBJECTIVE: Assess the efficacy and safety of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) compared with saline, delivered using a tattoo machine, to repigment IGH lesions.
METHODS: This split-body randomized single-blinded trial recruited adults with symmetrical IGH lesions. A tattoo machine was used to deliver 5FU in IGH lesions of 1 limb and saline in the contralateral limb. Outcomes were the number of achromic lesions 30 days after treatment compared with baseline, patient satisfaction, and local or systemic a
