A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of disturbance of consciousness and hyponatremia. The patient had suffered from acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) with 46,XY and received chemotherapy for 5 years. Meningeal carcinomatosis was diagnosed due to the detection of carcinoma cells in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Hyponatremia was caused by syndrome of inappropriate secretion of anti-diuretic hormone (SIADH). Bone marrow examination revealed myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with deletion of the long arm of chromosome 7. Emergence of a new abnormal clone was suggested. The patient

We have described a patient who had lung carcinoma, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone, and central pontine myelinolysis (CPM). Although this association is well-known, it appears to be the first report having radiographic documentation of both the intracranial and intrathoracic abnormalities. When searching for the cause of CPM, the possibility of an underlying malignancy should also be considered. This may be more common than the radiology literature would suggest.

We present the first documented case of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) triggered by heat stroke in a man in his mid-50s with no medical history. After experiencing acute symptoms during a heatwave, he was hospitalized. The absence of dehydration and the presence of hyponatremia, along with other laboratory findings, fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for SIADH once other causes were excluded. The linkage between heat stroke and SIADH is thought to involve neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the hypothalamus, which impacts antidiuretic hormone (ADH) pr

INTRODUCTION: Although the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone has connection with various malignant tumors, there are few reports associated with advanced gastric cancer.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 63-year-old Korean male with inappropriate antidiuretic hormone syndrome due to an ectopic antidiuretic hormone-producing advanced gastric adenocarcinoma manifested with overt serum hypo-osmolar hyponatremia and high urinary sodium concentrations. His adrenal, thyroidal, and renal functioning were normal, and the hyponatremia improved following removal of the tumor. Th

A 13-month-old, male bichon frise was examined for the investigation of intermittent seizures, ataxia, abnormal behavior, polyuria, and polydipsia. At presentation, clinical and neurological examinations were unremarkable with the exception of mild truncal ataxia and a domed skull. Severe hyponatremia and hypoosmolality were identified, and following diagnostic testing a diagnosis of the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) was made. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed changes consistent with severe hydrocephalus. Water restriction resulted in increased serum osmola

Hyponatremia, defined as a serum sodium concentration ([Na+]) less than 135 mEq/L, is commonly caused by elevated levels of the hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP), which causes water retention. The principal organ affected by disease-related morbidity is the brain. The neurologic complications associated with hyponatremia are attributable to cerebral edema and increased intracranial pressure, caused by the osmotically driven movement of water from the extracellular compartment into brain cells. Although neurologic symptoms induced by hyponatremia are limited by an adaptive brain mechanism know

A great deal of information has been accumulated on the synthesis and release of AVP, oxytocin, and their associated neurophysins under normal circumstances. In 1957, Schwartz and Bartter first described SIAD in patients with lung cancer and postulated that the clinical findings were the results of excessive vasopressin secretion. Tumors have been known since 1964 to produce vasopressin, and small cell (oat cell) carcinoma of the lung is by far the most frequent malignant cause of SIAD. The biosynthetic pathway for the synthesis of AVP and its associated neurophysin (and to a lesser extent, ox

One autopsy case with small cell lung cancer and the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is reported. Both plasma atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) levels were high, and the presence of significantly high levels of ANP and AVP in tumor tissue was confirmed by gel chromatography and radioimmunoassay techniques. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first case in which ectopic ANP production and its secretion into blood (leading to SIADH) were proved.

We describe a 74-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who developed syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) 1.5 months after commencement of mizoribin prescription when his arthritis was improved. He noticed nausea and headache and serum Na fell as low as 118 mEq/l. Normal urinary Na excretion without hypotension or hemoconcentration negated the possibility of dehydration resulting from urinary Na loss. Serum antidiuretic hormone (ADH) remained elevated at 0.59 pg/ml in spite of a significant reduction in serum osmolality to 254 mosm/kg. He had no organic dis

At the end of 2019, a novel coronavirus was identified as the cause of a cluster of pneumonia in China and it spread quickly to other countr … t developed hyponatremia. This case is remarkable because there is no reported case of Covid-19 and inappropriate ADH syndrome coexistence and it demonstrates that there may be a correlation between Covid-19 infection prognosis and hyponatremia.

Hyponatremia is the most frequent electrolyte disorder in hospitalized patients. Acute and severe hyponatremia can be a life-threatening condition, but recent evidence indicates that also mild and chronic hyponatremia is associated with neurological and extra-neurological signs, such as gait disturbances, attention deficits, falls and fracture occurrence, and bone loss. The syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion (SIADH) is the most frequent cause of hyponatremia. Hyponatremia secondary to SIADH may result for instance from ectopic release of ADH in lung cancer, from diseases affecting the cen

Although not rare, paraneoplastic syndromes develop in a minority of cancer patients. Their exact frequency seems to be underestimated. These syndromes are hereby described. Their clinical usefulness is of great importance: they can be the first sign of a malignancy and can be used as tumor markers. The diagnosis of paraneoplastic syndromes is often difficult. A "diagnosis score" is proposed in order to make the diagnosis easier.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignant neoplasm of sinonasal tract, derived from olfactory epithelium. Unilateral nasal obstruction, epistaxis, sinusitis, and headaches are common symptoms. Olfactory neuroblastoma shows neuroendocrine differentiation and similarly to other neuroendocrine tumors can produce several types of peptic substances and hormones. Excess production of these substances can be responsible for different types of endocrinological paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS). Moreover, besides endocrinological, in ONB may also occur neurological PNS, caused by immune cross-reac

Introduction: syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is the leading cause of euvolemic hypoosmolar hyponatremia and represents a therapeutic challenge in elderly patients. Case report: we report an 81-year-old woman with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and depressive disorder treated with drugs potentially associated with SIADH, who developed chronic euvolemic hyponatremia. Discussion: fluid restriction and oral sodium supplementation were ineffective. Tolvaptan induced a rapid increase in serum sodium and was discontinued due to risk of overcorrec

A 1-year-old spayed female Miniature Schnauzer had chronic hyponatremia, accompanied by polyuria and polydipsia. Blood tests and urinalysis revealed severe hyponatremia, low plasma osmolality with euvolemia, and increased sodium excretion in urine. Hypothyroidism and hypoadrenocorticism were ruled out as causes. These findings led to the diagnosis of syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed dilation of the lateral ventricles, indicating severe hydrocephalus. Tolvaptan, a vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist commonly used in huma

AIM: Nephrogenic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuresis (NSIAD) is a rare disease characterized by a kidney disability to dilute urine and, as a result, severe recurrent hyponatremia. Due to wide variability in clinical expression, the diagnosis still remains a challenge for clinicians. We report our experience of a case in which NSIAD was diagnosed early. We also stress the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, which protects an infant with NSAID from severe hyponatremia.
BACKGROUND: A 1-month-old boy was referred to our hospital for persistent hyponatremia and intense vomiting. He wa

INTRODUCTION: Chordoid glioma of the third ventricle is a rare and recently described tumor characterized by a unique histomorphology and exclusive association with the suprasellar/third ventricular compartment. Its clinical, radiological and histological features may vary. Despite the fact that chordoid glioma is a low-grade tumor, its prognosis has been relatively poor because of its insidious presentation and the difficulty in obtaining complete surgical resection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, we report on a new case of chordoid glioma occurring in a 48-year-old woman, presented with hypon

Hyponatremia is one of the most common electrolyte imbalances in HIV patients. The differential diagnosis may include hypovolemic hyponatremia, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), and adrenal insufficiency. Here, we describe a case of hyponatremia secondary to cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS) in an HIV patient with cryptococcal meningitis. A 52-year-old man with a history of diabetes and HIV was admitted for headache and found to have cryptococcal meningitis. He was also found to have asymptomatic hyponatremia. He had signs of hypovolemia, such as orthostatic
