The Effect of Changes in the Number of People in a VR Environment on Interpersonal Distance.

With the recent popularization of online interviews, lack of communication has become an issue. By using VR technology, it is expected to duplicate an environment similar to a face-to-face interview and optimize the interview environment with psychological comfort in mind. In this study, we examined the effects of the number of interviewers and types of objects in a VR space on participants' interpersonal distance. In Experiment 1, cardboard, mannequin, and human avatars were presented and participants' interpersonal distance was investigated. The results showed that participants tended to inc

The Impact of Non-Criterion A Traumas in Intimate Relationships on Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms: A Systematic Review.

Currently, the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder necessitates exposure to a traumatic event as defined by DSM-5-TR Criterion A. Nevertheless, evidence suggests that experiences not meeting Criterion A stressor definitions, specifically related to intimate relationships (e.g., psychological abuse) can also elicit clinically significant posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). However, the literature examining the unique role of non-Criterion A intimate relationship stressors on PTSS is sparse. This systematic review synthesized the literature examining the influence of non-Criterion A int

The foundations of mind-body medicine: Love, good relationships, and happiness modulate stress and promote health.

Although stress is an everyday fact of life, it can lead to poor health outcomes, particularly when intense or prolonged. However, humans have unique cognitive abilities and thus may be able to combat stress by engaging critical psychological defence mechanisms. In this review, we discuss the field of mind-body medicine, which focuses on improving our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this response and developing interventions that might be used to limit the effects of chronic stress. We review the findings of past and current research in this field that has focused on the impact of p

Neurocomputations on dual-brain signals underlie interpersonal prediction during a natural conversation.

Prediction on the partner's speech plays a key role in a smooth conversation. However, previous studies on this issue have been majorly conducted at the single-brain rather than dual-brain level, leaving the interpersonal prediction hypothesis untested. To fill this gap, this study combined a neurocomputational modeling approach with a natural conversation paradigm in which two salespersons persuaded a customer to buy their product with their haemodynamic signals being collected using functional near-infrared spectroscopy hyperscanning. First, the results showed a cognitive hierarchy in a natu

Self as both target and judge: Who has an easier time knowing their own personality?

OBJECTIVE: The past two decades have established that people generally have insight into their personalities, but less is known about how and why self-knowledge might vary between individuals. Using the Realistic Accuracy Model as a framework, we investigate whether some people make better "targets" of self-perception by behaving more consistently in everyday life, and whether these differences have benefits for psychological adjustment. METHOD: Using data from the Electronically Activated Recorder (n = 286), we indexed self-knowledge as the link between self-reports of personality and actual

Translating trait to state assessment: The case of grandiose narcissism.

Although interest in within-person variability in grandiose narcissism is growing, measurement tools are lacking that allow studying fluctuations in this personality characteristic in a differentiated manner (i.e., distinguishing narcissistic admiration and rivalry). This study explores whether a measurement approach using the six-item version of the Narcissistic Grandiosity Scale (NGS Rosenthal et al. (2007)) and six additional newly formulated adjectives allows assessing state admiration and rivalry. Structural characteristics and convergent validity of this approach were examined in an expe

Emotional straying: Flux and management of women's emotions in social media.

In recent years, social media, which has emerged with the core focus on interaction within "acquaintance networks," has gradually been infiltrated by "strangers," leading to the disorientation of many users, especially women, amidst the diverse and intricate social platforms and emotional landscapes. Grounded in the experiential perspective of social media users, this study explores the correlations among woman emotions, satisfaction, and behavior, starting from the standpoint of the impact of social media. Through in-depth interviews with woman cohorts in China, various dimensions such as emo

Infertility, reproductive timing and 'cure' in families affected by Turner Syndrome.

This article discusses the influence of a chromosome condition affecting women's reproductive capacity, Turner Syndrome (TS), on affected women's social timing, examining the strategic decisions that are made within families in relation to reproduction, to navigate these disruptions. Based on photo elicitation interviews with 19 women with TS and 11 mothers of girls with TS in the UK, it presents findings from an under-researched topic, TS and reproductive choices. In a social context where motherhood is not only desirable, but expected (Suppes, 2020), the social imaginary of infertility antic

The network structure of paranoia dimensions and its mental health correlates in the general population: The core role of loneliness.

Paranoid ideas are the most common abnormal beliefs in the schizophrenia spectrum, are also prevalent in non-clinical populations, and are highly correlated with other mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and low levels of well-being. Two previous studies with the same British population sample used confirmatory factor analysis and network analysis to show that the spectrum of paranoid beliefs is made up of four factors or dimensions (i.e., interpersonal sensitivity, mistrust, ideas of reference and ideas of persecution). The aims of this study are: 1) to explore the distribution

Strengthening Schools' Responses to Students' Harmful Sexual Behaviors: A Scoping Review.

Research into harmful sexual behavior (HSB) by children and young people under the age of 18 has grown in recent years. A key concern emerging is the high prevalence of HSB in school settings. Although teachers are increasingly aware of HSB, their provision of effective responses has remained a major challenge. While progress has been made by providing teachers with best practice models and tools, little is known about what facilitates and hinders their application of these in practice. This scoping review sought to address the question: "What are the barriers and enablers for teachers in resp

Interpersonal perceptions in treatment sessions: Pathological narcissism predicts self-rater discrepancies.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that pathological narcissism impacts psychotherapy process and outcome. This study investigates whether traits of pathological narcissism account for distinctiveness (construal) of patients' interpersonal perceptions in treatment settings. METHODS: Patients enrolled in psychological/psychotherapeutic treatment (N = 150) described a segment of a session in a written format and subsequently assessed both self- and clinician's behavior on the dimensions of dominance and hostility (patient-reported ratings), along with their pathological narcissistic traits. Bared-teeth displays in bonobos (Pan paniscus): An assessment of the power asymmetry hypothesis.

Facial expressions are key to navigating social group life. The Power Asymmetry Hypothesis of Motivational Emancipation predicts that the type of social organization shapes the meaning of communicative displays in relation to an individual's dominance rank. The bared-teeth (BT) display represents one of the most widely observed communicative signals across primate species. Studies in macaques indicate that the BT display in despotic species is often performed unidirectionally, from low- to high-ranking individuals (signaling submission), whereas the BT display in egalitarian species is usually

Conflicts in the workplace, negative acts and health consequences: evidence from a clinical evaluation.

Interpersonal conflicts at workplace are increasing in relation to high competitiveness and pressures at work, mainly connected with labor market globalization. Their manifestation is multifaceted in relation to different working conditions and they not only hinder health, performance, and job satisfaction, but can also harm people's rights and dignity. The study analyses issues related to work conflicts and adverse health consequences in 1,493 workers who approached a hospital service for work-related stress and harassment over a 3-year period. The subjects were examined according to a broad

Communicative Interaction with and without Eye-Gaze Technology between Children and Youths with Complex Needs and Their Communication Partners.

UNLABELLED: Use of eye-gaze assistive technology (EGAT) provides children/youths with severe motor and speech impairments communication opportunities by using eyes to control a communication interface on a computer. However, knowledge about how using EGAT contributes to communication and influences dyadic interaction remains limited. AIM: By video-coding dyadic interaction sequences, this study investigates the impacts of employing EGAT, compared to the Non-EGAT condition on the dyadic communicative interaction. METHOD: Participants were six dyads with children/youths aged 4-19 years having

Take a sad song and make it better: Spousal activity limitations, caregiving, and depressive symptoms among couples.

OBJECTIVES: Framed around key concepts of the life course perspective, we examined the linkages between spousal activity limitations, caregiving transitions, and depression among married couples. The key study objectives were 1) to demonstrate how the caregiving-depression link widely reported in earlier research may have been over-stated, and 2) to investigate whether caregiving yields mental health benefits by weakening the link between spousal activity limitations and depressive symptoms. METHODS: We used longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (2004-2016) to examine a natio

Connection and Caring Through a Therapeutic Juvenile Corrections Model: Staff and Youth Resident Perceptions of Structural and Interpersonal Dimensions.

This mixed-method exploratory inductive study examined incarcerated youths' and staff members' perceptions of a new community-focused therapeutic model in a large youth prison. Via 18 focus groups (N = 141) and facility-wide surveys (N = 248), both youth and staff shared perceptions of specific structural components of the model designed to change their relationship to one another, such as consistent staffing, higher staff-resident ratios, and program features designed to enhance rapport. Both groups also provided rich descriptions of the altered interpersonal dynamics related to connection an

Exploratory Controlled Study of the Impact of a Hypnosis-Based Intervention on the Couple's Communication and Coping in the Context of Cancer.

Emotional distress, communication, and dyadic coping difficulties are common among cancer patients and their partners. Hypnosis-based interventions can improve emotional distress in patients. We designed a group intervention combining self-hypnosis and self-care techniques. We hypothesized an effect of the intervention on emotional distress, conjugal communication, and dyadic coping, considered in patients and their partners. Our exploratory controlled study included 55 women with cancer and 55 partners. Participants completed questionnaires before and after the intervention, which was deliver
