Correlation of C-Peptide Levels With Complications of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

Introduction Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a major worldwide health issue that leads to serious problems in small and large blood vessels. C-peptide, which is released alongside insulin in equal quantities, acts as a reliable indicator of how well the beta cells of the pancreas are functioning and may be associated with diabetes-related complications. Methodology This one-year cross-sectional observational study took place at Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur, including 130 patients with type 2 diabetes who had had the condition for more than 10 years. Participants received thorough ass

Laparoscopic radiofrequency for small renal masses. What is the best imaging technique?

OBJECTIVES: The diagnosis of low clinical stage renal cancer has risen up during the last years thanks to the advances on radiological imaging tools. As a result, several minimally invasive techniques have appeared which offer the same oncological results than conventional/laparoscopic surgery without their morbidity. One of these techniques is percutaneous radiofrequency (RF). In this paper we expose the oncological and functional outcomes of percutaneous RF after a review of the literature. METHODS: We made a search using the principal medical libraries as the Cochrane Central of clinical c

Nursing Education Supporting Inclusive Skin and Hair Care.

INTRODUCTION: Inclusive hair and skin care are essential for culturally congruent health care; however, hospitalized patients with textured hair and skin of color experience limited access to appropriate products. Nursing staff also report gaps in knowledge related to culturally responsive care of hair and skin. This initiative aimed to improve care through product access and education. METHODS: A quality improvement project was conducted at a Midwestern academic medical center. Surveys of nurses, patient care assistants, and employee resource groups informed product selection and education d

Genome report: whole-genome assembly of the relapsing fever tick Ornithodoros turicata Dugès (Acari: Argasidae).

The soft tick family Argasidae contains vectors of medical and veterinary importance, but few molecular resources are available compared to hard ticks (Ixodidae). One example is Ornithodoros turicata, a recognized vector of Borrelia turicatae, causal agent of human relapsing fever, and a putative vector of African swine fever virus. To address the current lack of molecular resources for the Argasidae, we generated a chromosome-level genome assembly for O. turicata using PacBio sequencing in conjunction with an Illumina Hi-C library. The resulting reference genome has a total of 1.1 Gb in lengt

A Practical Guide to Injection Therapy in Hand Tendinopathies: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Hand tendinopathies represent a pathological condition associated with significant disability. However, due to this high heterogeneity of the treatments and their efficacy, there is still a lack of consensus on the infiltrative therapy of the hand. This systematic review aimed to investigate the efficacy of injection techniques in the treatment of pain related to the main hand tendinopathies. We searched online medical databases (PubMed, Pedro, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and WoS). Only RCTs published in the last 10 years (up to 5 August 2024), written in English, and related to infiltrative tre

Efficacy and Safety of Topical Morphine: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Opioids are the cornerstone of the therapy used in both acute and chronic pain syndromes to treat pain of moderate to severe intensity. The knowledge that opioid receptors also occur in other tissues outside the central nervous system has created a possibility for the topical use of opioids. Thus, local analgesia may be obtained without systemic adverse effects. METHODS: A narrative review of scientific papers discussing the topical use of morphine was conducted. For this purpose, the PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and Mendeley databases were searched. RESULTS: The cur

Movement disorders associated with antiseizure medications: A systematic review.

New-onset movement disorders have been frequently reported in association with the use of antiseizure medications (ASMs). The frequency of specific motor manifestations and the spectrum of their semiology for various ASMs have not been well characterized. We carried out a systematic review of literature and conducted a search on CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Scopus from inception to April 2021. We compiled the data for all currently available ASMs using the conventional terminology of movement disorders. Among 5123 manuscripts identified by the search, 437 met the in

Drug discovery for psychiatric disorders using high-content single-cell screening of signaling network responses ex vivo.

There is a paucity of efficacious new compounds to treat neuropsychiatric disorders. We present a novel approach to neuropsychiatric drug discovery based on high-content characterization of druggable signaling network responses at the single-cell level in patient-derived lymphocytes ex vivo. Primary T lymphocytes showed functional responses encompassing neuropsychiatric medications and central nervous system ligands at established (e.g., GSK-3β) and emerging (e.g., CrkL) drug targets. Clinical application of the platform to schizophrenia patients over the course of antipsychotic treatment reve

Isolation of a recombinant antibody specific for a surface marker of the corneal endothelium by phage display.

Cell surface antigens are important targets for monoclonal antibodies, but they are often difficult to work with due to their association with the cell membrane. Phage display is a versatile technique that can be applied to generate binders against difficult targets. Here we used antibody phage display to isolate a binder for a rare and specialized cell, the human corneal endothelial cell. The human corneal endothelium is a medically important cell layer; defects in this layer account for about half of all corneal transplants. Despite its importance, no specific antigens have been found to mar

Management of delirium in palliative care: a review.

Delirium is a complex but common disorder in palliative care with a prevalence between 13 and 88 % but a particular frequency at the end of life (terminal delirium). By reviewing the most relevant studies (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycLit, PsycInfo, Cochrane Library), a correct assessment to make the diagnosis (e.g., DSM-5, delirium assessment tools), the identification of the possible etiological factors, and the application of multicomponent and integrated interventions were reported as the correct steps to effectively manage delirium in palliative care. In terms of medications, both conventional (e

Intra-abdominal venous and arterial thromboembolism in inflammatory bowel disease.

Venous and arterial thromboembolism constitutes a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The most common thrombotic manifestations are lower extremity deep vein thromboses with or without pulmonary embolism. Occasionally, thromboembolic events occur in the main abdominal vessels, such as the portal and superior mesenteric veins, vena cava and hepatic vein, aorta, splanchnic and iliac arteries, or in the limb arteries. The decision-making process for the treatment of these uncommon thromboembolic complications in inflammatory bowel disease may
