Histological properties of the nasal cavity and olfactory bulb of the Japanese jungle crow Corvus macrorhynchos.

The nasal cavity and olfactory bulb (OB) of the Japanese jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) were studied using computed tomography (CT) and histochemical staining. The nasal septum divided the nasal cavity in half. The anterior and maxillary conchae were present on both sides of the nasal cavity, but the posterior concha was indistinct. A small OB was present on the ventral surface of the periphery of the cerebrum. The OB-brain ratio--the ratio of the size of the OB to that of the cerebral hemisphere--was 6.13. The olfactory nerve bundles projected independently to the OB, which appeared fused

Transmaxillary approach to the anterior cavernous sinus: a microanatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: Several approaches to expose the anterior cavernous sinus have been used, such as frontotemporal, orbitofrontal, anterior subtemporal, and various transfacial approaches. In an effort to gain exposure to the anterior cavernous sinus without necessitating a craniotomy or wide transfacial exposure, the authors in the present study have developed a transmaxillary approach to the cavernous sinus. METHODS: The approach was developed using data obtained by performing 24 cadaveric dissections. Using a sublabial incision to expose the maxilla, maxillotomy is performed and the course of the

Transdermal neuromodulation of noradrenergic activity suppresses psychophysiological and biochemical stress responses in humans.

We engineered a transdermal neuromodulation approach that targets peripheral (cranial and spinal) nerves and utilizes their afferent pathways as signaling conduits to influence brain function. We investigated the effects of this transdermal electrical neurosignaling (TEN) method on sympathetic physiology under different experimental conditions. The TEN method involved delivering high-frequency pulsed electrical currents to ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the right trigeminal nerve and cervical spinal nerve afferents. Under resting conditions, TEN significantly suppressed basal sympatheti

Palisaded encapsulated neuroma of oral mucosa.

The palisaded encapsulated neuroma is a solitary, small peripheral nerve lesion that occurs primarily on the facial skin of middle-aged adults. We report a series of 13 cases of palisaded encapsulated neuroma occurring on oral mucosa. The lesions presented as solitary, firm, sessile, partly or completely encapsulated, 2 to 3 mm nodules in adults with a mean age of 51 years (median 55 years). Nine of the neuromas occurred on the hard palate; the remainder were found on the soft palate, lower lip mucosa, upper lip mucosa, and maxillary anterior alveolar ridge. None of the cases was associated wi

Simultaneous Paranasal Augmentation and Le Fort I Osteotomy Using a Patient-Specific Implant Designed to Share the Fixation Space: Two-Year Clinical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Residual paranasal concavity may persist after Le Fort I osteotomy despite adequate maxillary repositioning, limiting the aesthetic impact of orthognathic surgery. Simultaneous paranasal implant placement is rarely reported due to spatial conflict with rigid internal fixation systems and concerns regarding infraorbital nerve safety. METHODS: Two patients underwent Le Fort I osteotomy combined with simultaneous placement of patient-specific paranasal implants designed through 3-dimensional virtual surgical planning (VSP) to intentionally share the anatomical space occupied by Le Fo

Zygomatic fractures and infraorbital nerve disturbances. Miniplate osteosynthesis vs. other treatment modalities.

The present paper reviews the results obtained with different modalities of treatment employed in isolated fractures of the zygomatic complex. Seventy-three patients were re-examined with respect to infraorbital nerve function. The results obtained suggest that the incidence of hypoaesthesia of the infraorbital nerve following fracture of the zygomatic complex can be reduced if rigid fixation is applied on the infraorbital rim. The zygomatic bone is a protruding part of the human skeleton and is therefore easily affected by trauma to the facial region. The etiology and clinical appearance of f

Acalvaria, holoprosencephaly, and facial dysmorphism syndrome.

An estimated 85-day-old human fetus exhibited a malformation complex consisting of holoprosencephaly, absent calvaria, exophthalmic hypertelorism, and severe bilateral midfacial orofacial clefting involving the maxillary/frontonasal prominences (oblique facial clefts), upper lip (bilateral clefts), and palate (complete cleft). This combination of dysplasias precludes assignment to previously described syndrome complexes. The presence of an olfactory nerve/ethmoidal bone complex does not conform with "classic holoprosencephaly," nor does acalvaria without cerebral dysraphism fit into the cranio

A possible association of pernicious anemia with neoplasia.

7 out of 39 patients with pernicious anemia developed 9 different neoplasms during a period of 3--20 years after the diagnosis of pernicious anemia. These primary neoplasms originated from the lymph nodes, larynx, colon, stomach, kidney, meninges, maxillary sinus and eighth nerve. Treatment with vitamin B12 did not influence the development of tumor. Statistical analysis showed that the observed incidence of 9 neoplasms in this group was significantly higher than the expected 3.3 cases during the aggregate follow-up period (p = 0.002). Although a higher incidence of neoplasms in patients with

Assessment of infraorbital foramen position using computed tomography-scan in a cohort of Cameroonian adults: landmarks in facial surgery and anesthesiology.

INTRODUCTION: the infraorbital foramen (IOF) is a hole located in the maxillary bone and delivering passage to the infra orbital vascular-nervous bundle. It is an essential structure in the management of orofacial pathologies. Its precise location allows optimal anesthesia of the infraorbital nerve during cleft lip and palate surgery or alcoholization during the management of essential V2 neuralgia. The aim of our research was to determine the morphology and morphometry of the infraorbital foramen in a sample of the Cameroonian population. METHODS: we included 208 CT-scans of patients meeting

Interventions for anesthetic success in symptomatic irreversible pulpitis: A network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Local anesthetics alone or in combination with adjuncts, such as oral medications, have routinely been used for pain control during endodontic treatment. The best clinical choice amongst the vast numbers of agents and techniques available for pain control for irreversible pulpitis is unclear. This network meta-analysis combined the available evidence on agents and techniques for pulpal anesthesia in the maxilla and mandible, in order to identify the best amongst these approaches statistically, as a basis for future clinical trials. METHODS: Randomized trials in MEDLINE, DARE, and

Facial sensibility in adolescents with and without clefts 1 year after undergoing Le Fort I osteotomy.

Static two-point discrimination, pressure, and vibratory threshold values were measured at standard coordinates in the area corresponding to the infraorbital nerve distribution in 59 adolescents 1 year after undergoing LeFort I osteotomy. The patients were divided into three groups: those born with unilateral cleft lip and palate (n = 30; mean age, 18 years; SD = 2); those with bilateral cleft lip and palate (n = 12; mean age, 19 years; SD = 3); and those without a cleft (n = 17; mean age, 19 years; SD = 3). One year after the osteotomy, none of the patients complained of altered sensibility i
