Trichophyton rubrum autoinoculation from infected nails is not such a rare phenomenon.

Kerion-like lesions are usually caused by zoophilic dermatophytes. Here, we present a rare case report - an inflammatory tinea barbae due to an anthropophilic fungus (Trichophyton rubrum), which is the main pathogen of onychomycosis and tinea pedis. Probably the infection, in the presented case, spread from diseased fingernails. We do postulate that physicians should consider autoinoculation as a not so rare way of fungal infection transmission.

Bilateral femoral insuffiency fractures treated with inflatable intramedullary nails: a case report.

Stress fractures could be classified as fatigue fractures and insufficiency fractures (IF). Fatigue fractures occur when abnormal mechanical stress is applied to a normal bone, on the other hand insufficiency fractures occur when normal to moderate pressure is applied to a bone that has decreased resistance (Daffner and Pavlov in Am J Radiol 159:242-245, 1992). IF have been observed mainly in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis, and are becoming more common with the increase of elderly population (Daffner and Pavlov in Am J Radiol 159:242-245, 1992). Mismatch of current intramedullary nails with the anterior bow of the femur.

OBJECTIVES: The anterior curvature of the femur affects intramedullary nail insertion, revision prosthesis design, and the biomechanics of the proximal femur. Two previous studies, using small numbers of femurs, determined femoral curvature and showed that it was significantly greater than that of the several intramedullary nails they evaluated. In this study, the curvature of 948 femurs (474 matched pairs) was determined and compared with current intramedullary nails. The correlation of femoral curvature to age, gender, femoral size, and race was also evaluated. SETTING: Museum skeletal coll…

Cutaneous B-cell lymphoma of nails, pinna and nose treated with chlorambucil.

An 83-year-old woman presented with primary multifocal cutaneous B-cell lymphoma, presenting as discrete nodules on the right pinna and nail-bed of the left middle finger, diffuse swelling and erythema of several other nail-beds of the fingers and toes, with associated pincer nail deformity and rhinophyma. Because of the involvement of several sites not amenable to radiotherapy, she was treated with oral cyclical chlorambucil with good result.

Susceptibility to fungal infections of nails in patients with primary antibody deficiency.

Primary antibody deficiencies are rare diseases, which require early treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins to prevent fatal infections. The cell mediated immunity in patients with those immunodeficiencies remains unimpaired and usually they do not develop fungal infections. The aim of the study was to determine the susceptibility to fungal infections of nails in children with X-linked agammaglobulinaemia (XLA) and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Nail plate fragments collected from five patients with XLA and five with CVID were experimentally infected with a Candida albicans and T…

[Sub-total hereditary leukonychia, histopathological and electron microscopy study of "milky" nails].

INTRODUCTION: Leuconychia is the most common of ungueal discoloration or dyschromia. The hereditary form, sub-total or total, is very rare. We report the observation of a family in which thirteen members, distributed over four generations, presented a partial or subtotal leukonychia of all nails. On the basis of this observation and histopathological analysis of the propositus nail, we discuss the different hypotheses proposed to account for white nails. OBSERVATION: A 45 year-old man without previous medical history, showed partial or sub-total leukonychia of his twenty nails. Clinical exami…

Idiopathic atrophy of the nails: clinical and pathological study of 2 cases.

BACKGROUND: Whether idiopathic atrophy of the nails (IAN) should be considered a separate entity or a clinical variant of nail lichen planus is still controversial. OBJECTIVE: We report here the pathological study of 2 patients with IAN. METHODS: Our patients had similar clinical features consisting of severe nail atrophy with and without pterygium. RESULTS: The nail matrix architecture was markedly deformed with complete disappearance of the keratogenous zone that was replaced by a 3- to 10-cell-thick granular layer. CONCLUSION: The hypothesis that IAN is an acute and self-limited variety…

Intertrochanteric fractures treated with proximal femoral bionic nail versus proximal femoral nail antirotation versus InterTan Nail: A meta-analysis.

UNLABELLED: Intertrochanteric fractures, common in the elderly, are often treated with intramedullary (IM) nails. The comparison of outcomes for different IM nails has not been thoroughly evaluated. This meta-analysis compares postoperative outcomes of PFNA, InterTan, and the newer PFBN. PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched until April 2025. Comparative studies evaluating ≥2 IM nails reporting key outcomes were included. Outcomes included union/weight-bearing/hospital stay times, operative time, blood loss, complications (delayed/non-union, hardware failure, infections, deep vein t…

Paediatric forearm refractures with flexible nails in-situ: risk factors and management.

To identify risk factors for forearm shaft refractures in paediatric patients treated with flexible nails in situ and explore effective management strategies. From January 2022 to April 2024, paediatric patients with diaphyseal radius and ulna fractures treated with flexible nails were retrospectively reviewed. Patients without refractures were assigned to group A, and those with refractures and flexible nails in situ to group B. Demographics, injury mechanisms, operative details, complications, and time to radiographic union were analyzed. Fifty-six paediatric patients with 105 forearm fractu…

Extraction of Broken Intramedullary Nails Using Olive-Tipped Guidewire and Minifragment Screws.

In nonunion surgery, removing a broken intramedullary nail can be technically challenging and time-consuming, often requiring either creating a bone window or an open approach to retrieve the broken nail. A simple, effective, and minimally traumatic technique is presented for removing the difficult-to-access part of broken canulated intramedullary nails. First, the olive-tipped guidewire is inserted and advanced down the nail until the olive end protrudes out of the broken nail. A minifragment screw is inserted through a locking screw hole in the broken part under fluoroscopy. The guidewire is…

Acrylates in artificial nails-Results of product analyses and glove penetration studies.

BACKGROUND: Artificial nail materials are mixtures that are prone to contain several sensitizing (meth)acrylates. It is not known whether the listing of (meth)acrylates is correct in these products' packages. Protective gloves suited for nail work are needed. OBJECTIVES: To analyse (meth)acrylates in gel nail and acrylic nail products chemically and to compare the results with the information in the product labels, and to study penetration of artificial nail materials through selected disposable gloves. METHODS: We analysed 31 gel nail products and 6 acrylic nail products for their (meth)acr
