Neutralizing IL-17 protects the optic nerve from autoimmune pathology and prevents retinal nerve fiber layer atrophy during experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Optic neuritis is a common inflammatory manifestation of multiple sclerosis (MS). In experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the optic nerve is affected as well. Here, we investigated whether autoimmune inflammation in the optic nerve is distinct from inflammation in other parts of the central nervous system (CNS). In our study, inflammatory infiltrates in the optic nerve and the brain were characterized by a high fraction of Ly6G(+) granulocytes whereas in the spinal cord, macrophage infiltrates were predominant. At the peak of disease, IL-17 mRNA abundance was highest in the optic n

Relationship of optic nerve and brain conventional and non-conventional MRI measures and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, as assessed by OCT and GDx: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in multiple sclerosis (MS) is gaining increasing attention. OBJECTIVES: To explore the relationship between RNFL thickness as measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning laser polarimetry with variable corneal compensation (GDx), and conventional and non-conventional optic nerve and brain MRI measures. METHODS: Twelve relapsing-remitting (RR) MS patients (12 affected and 12 unaffected eyes) and 4 age- and sex-matched normal controls (NC) (8 unaffected eyes) were enrolled. Four MS patients had a history of b

Comparison of Video Laryngoscope to a Flexible Fiber-optic Bronchoscope for Intubation of Patients Undergoing Elective Cervical Spine Surgery with Cervical Immobilization: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cervical spine injury patients often require airway management under conditions where neck movement must be minimized to prevent neurological deterioration. Conventional fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) has long been considered the gold standard for such cases, but newer videolaryngoscopes (VDLs) are increasingly being evaluated as viable alternatives. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of VDL and fiberoptic bronchoscope for endotracheal intubation in patients undergoing elective cervical spine surgery under general anaesthesia. MATERIALS A

Early inner plexiform layer thinning and retinal nerve fiber layer thickening in excitotoxic retinal injury using deep learning-assisted optical coherence tomography.

Excitotoxicity from the impairment of glutamate uptake constitutes an important mechanism in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease. Within the eye, excitotoxicity is thought to play a critical role in retinal ganglion cell death in glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinal ischemia, and optic nerve injury, yet how excitotoxic injury impacts different retinal layers is not well understood. Here, we investigated the longitudinal effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced excitotoxic retinal injury in a rat model using deep learning-assisted

Fiber Optic Particle Plasmon Resonance Biosensor for Label-Free Detection of Nucleic Acids and Its Application to HLA-B27 mRNA Detection in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

We developed a label-free, real-time, and highly sensitive nucleic acid biosensor based on fiber optic particle plasmon resonance (FOPPR). The biosensor employs a single-strand deoxyoligonucleotides (ssDNA) probe, conjugated to immobilized gold nanoparticles on the core surface of an optical fiber. We explore the steric effects on hybridization affinity and limit of detection (LOD), by using different ssDNA probe designs and surface chemistries, including diluent molecules of different lengths in mixed self-assembled monolayers, ssDNA probes of different oligonucleotide lengths, ssDNA probes i

A Highly Selective Fiber-Optic Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor Based on an alkaline MXene/Layered Double Hydroxide Hybrid for Trace-Level Detection of Ni(II).

A highly selective fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor was developed for trace detection of Ni2+. A gold nanolayer was deposited onto a single-mode optical fiber, yielding a refractive index sensitivity of 1925.9 nm/RIU. An alkaline MXene/layered double hydroxide (alk-MXene/LDH) hybrid structure was subsequently fabricated via mechanical self-assembly using a two-dimensional Ti3C2 MXene substrate and immobilized on the SPR sensing interface for selective Ni2+ detection. Benefiting from the layered structure of LDH and the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups on MXene, th

Miniature Optical Fiber Fabry-Perot Interferometer Based on a Single-Crystal Metal-Organic Framework for the Detection and Quantification of Benzene and Ethanol at Low Concentrations in Nitrogen Gas.

This study reports for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a real-time detection of ultralow-concentration chemical gases using fiber-optic technology, combining a miniaturized Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The sensor consists of a short and thick-walled silica capillary segment spliced to a lead-in single-mode fiber (SMF), housing a tiny single crystal of HKUST-1 MOF, imparting chemoselectivity features. Ethanol and benzene gases were tested, resulting in a shift in the FPI interference signal. The sensor demonstrated high sensitivity, detect

Co(III)-NTA Mediated Antigen Immobilization on a Fiber Optic-SPR Biosensor for Detection of Autoantibodies in Autoimmune Diseases: Application in Immune-Mediated Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura.

Autoantibodies are key biomarkers in clinical diagnosis of autoimmune diseases routinely detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). However, the complexity of these assays is limiting their use in routine diagnostics. Fiber optic-surface plasmon resonance (FO-SPR) can overcome these limitations, but improved surface chemistries are still needed to guarantee detection of autoantibodies in complex matrices. In this paper, we describe the development of an FO-SPR immunoassay for the detection of autoantibodies in plasma samples from immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpur

Neonatal tactile stimulation reverses alterations in fine structure of small, but not large myelinated fibers, from the optic nerve of iron-deficient rats: A size-based selectivity.

Iron is the most common micronutrient deficiency in the world and it is most prevalent in young children, exposing their developing brain to inadequate iron levels. The damage related to neuroanatomical parameters is not reversed after iron treatment. However, evidence suggest that tactile stimulation (TS) may offer great therapeutic efficacy in cases of nutritional disorders postnatally, since the brain is remarkably responsive to its interaction with the environment. Recently, we shown that neonatal iron deficient rats achieved some remedial effect by exposing them to TS treatment early in l

[Experimental anatomic study of the topography of the retinofugal projections in Discoglossus pictus (Amphibia, Anura). I. The thalamus: re-examination of the contralateral retinotopy and the origin of the uncrossed optic fibers].

The topography of retinofugal projections on the thalamus of an Anuran Amphibia was studied by Fink-Heimer technique. After small lesions in retina, degeneration was found in all contralateral neuropils and in one or several ipsilateral neuropils according to retinal location: A lesion in temporal retina is followed by large axonal degeneration in neuropil of Bellonci; a dorsal lesion invaded whole geniculate neuropil while within it, contralateral ventral and nasal projections are scarce. Ipsilaterally, excepted for the nasal retina, all territories project to anterior neuropils; but, only te
