OBJECTIVE: To assess outcomes for different times to the first independent medical evaluation (IME) for work-related lumbosacral sprain.
METHODS: The 2005 West Virginia workers' compensation claims for "lumbosacral sprain" were used for our analyses. Outcomes included costs, maximal medical improvement status, number of IMEs performed, and the length of temporary total disability. Two hundred twelve patients were treated for facial or skull trauma at the West Virginia University Hospital between the years 1977 and 1987. Sixty-six of these patients had frontal sinus or nasofrontal duct trauma. Follow-up information was obtained on 64 of these patients through clinic visits, chart review, questionnaires to patients and physicians, and telephone calls to the patients. Colonoscopy is unsuccessful in some patients because of a fixed sigmoid loop or anatomical stenoses. We prospectively evaluated 1600 patients undergoing colonoscopy at Virginia Mason Medical Center from December 1, 1986 to November 31, 1987. Thirty-one procedures (1.9%) failed to reach the splenic flexure because of functional or anatomic stenoses. We present the case of a healthy, young Caucasian female who presented to an outside hospital with phlegmasia cerulea dolens of both lower extremities. Computed tomography angiography revealed inferior vena cava (IVC) occlusion. She was initiated on heparin infusion and transferred to University of Virginia Medical Center. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional survey study examines the link between ADHD medication misuse and a positive screen for adult ADHD symptoms.
METHOD: Surveys from 184 college student volunteers in Northern Virginia are collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 71% of ADHD stimulant misusers screen positive for ADHD symptoms. Misusers are 7 times more likely to be symptomatic for ADHD than those who do not misuse. Also, 87% of misusers indicate that they do so for academic reasons, and 76% believe that the misuse of the ADHD stimulants improve their grades.

This retrospective study characterizes the suicidal behavior in 119 patients with Axis I adjustment disorders as assessed by psychiatrists at the University of Virginia Hospital. Results indicated that 72 patients (60.5%) had documented suicide attempts in the past, 96% had been suicidal during their admission to the hospital, and 50% had attempted suicide before their hospitalization.
