We studied the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected in woodland areas in the vicinity of Weilburg (Hesse, Germany). Ticks (n = 13,347) were collected in five localities in 1996 and were fixed in 70% ethanol. Out of them, 4404 specimens were analysed individually (n = 406) and in 796 pools of 2-10 specimens (n = 3998) by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). OBJECTIVE: To investigate asymptomatic carriage of Haemophilus ducreyi by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on samples from women at high risk of infection.
SUBJECTS: 213 commercial sex workers (CSWs) recruited in The Gambia, West Africa.
METHODS: Genital samples (cervical, vaginal and ulcer) were tested for the presence of H ducreyi by PCR with the technique of "one tube nested primer".
RESULTS: 12 CSWs were PCR positive for H ducreyi; 8 of these women had genital ulcers on examination.

A juvenile racing pigeon ( Columba livia ) was presented with drooping of the wing and inability to fly. On physical examination, the right shoulder joint was swollen. An adult male guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) with a 1-month history of hind limb paresis, torticollis, and seizures was euthanized and submitted for necropsy. Toxoplasma gondii can cause lifelong infection in most definitive and intermediate hosts. Serological evidence of T. gondii infection has been documented in both captive and free-ranging lions.
