Retrospective Analysis of EEG in Patients With COVID-19: EEG Recording in Acute and Follow-up Phases.

Background. Interest in electroencephalographic (EEG) coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) findings has been growing, especially in the search for a specific-features EEG of encephalopathy. Methods. We made a retrospective analysis of 29 EEGs recorded in 15 patients with COVID-19 and neurological symptoms. We classified the EEGs as "Acute EEG" and "follow-up EEG." We did a statistical analysis between voltage and respiratory status of the patient, stay or not in the intensive care unit (ICU), days of stay in the ICU, sedative drugs, pharmacological treatment, type of symptoms predominating, and

Neurologic Characterization of Craniosynostosis: Can Direct Brain Recordings Predict Language Development?

PURPOSE: Nonsyndromic craniosynostosis (NSC) is associated with language deficits. Conventional tests, such as the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID), may not reflect accurate long-term cognition. Alternatively, mismatch negativity (MMN) waves recorded via electroencephalogram (EEG) measure neural responses to speech and may objectively predict language development. This study aimed to (1) correlate infant MMN to future language achievement and (2) compare MMN among subtypes of NSC. METHODS: Pre and postoperatively (mean operative age 9.5 months), NSC participants received the BSID an

Decoding four hand gestures with a single bipolar pair of electrocorticography electrodes.

Objective.Electrocorticography (ECoG) based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can be used to restore communication in individuals with locked-in syndrome. In motor-based BCIs, the number of degrees-of-freedom, and thus the speed of the BCI, directly depends on the number of classes that can be discriminated from the neural activity in the sensorimotor cortex. When considering minimally invasive BCI implants, the size of the subdural ECoG implant must be minimized without compromising the number of degrees-of-freedom.Approach.Here we investigated if four hand gestures could be decoded using a si

Early and late-onset nonconvulsive status epilepticus after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) is a condition that needs timely diagnosis and treatment. It has insignificant clinical features and presents high risk of misdiagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To investigate NCSE among patients with stroke, given that stroke plays an important role in the etiology of NCSE. METHODS: In this retrospective study, acute stroke patients who were admitted and followed up at a stroke outpatient clinic between January 2013 and March 2016 were included. Patients with previous histories of epilepsy, brain tumor, head trauma, hypertensive encephalopathy, arterio

Fulminant subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) presented with acute hemiparesis in a 13-year-old girl with perinatally acquired HIV infection.

A 13-year-old girl with perinatally acquired HIV infection was admitted to us with acute onset, right-sided hemiparesis of 30 days duration and right-sided myoclonic jerks of 2 days duration affecting the face, upper and lower limbs. On examination, she exhibited increased tone and a pyramidal pattern of weakness in her right upper and lower limbs, along with spontaneous multifocal myoclonic jerks in the affected area. IgG levels in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid for measles were significantly elevated. Brain MRI depicted T2-weighted-hyperintensities in the subcortical white matter. The ele

Learning in brain-computer interface control evidenced by joint decomposition of brain and behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Motor imagery-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) use an individual's ability to volitionally modulate localized brain activity, often as a therapy for motor dysfunction or to probe causal relations between brain activity and behavior. However, many individuals cannot learn to successfully modulate their brain activity, greatly limiting the efficacy of BCI for therapy and for basic scientific inquiry. Formal experiments designed to probe the nature of BCI learning have offered initial evidence that coherent activity across spatially distributed and functionally diverse cognitive

Can the occipital alpha-phase speed up visual detection through a real-time EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI)?

Electrical brain oscillations reflect fluctuations in neural excitability. Fluctuations in the alpha band (α, 8-12 Hz) in the occipito-parietal cortex are thought to regulate sensory responses, leading to cyclic variations in visual perception. Inspired by this theory, some past and recent studies have addressed the relationship between α-phase from extra-cranial EEG and behavioural responses to visual stimuli in humans. The latest studies have used offline approaches to confirm α-gated cyclic patterns. However, a particularly relevant implication is the possibility to use this principle onlin

A Diagnostic Biomarker for Pediatric Generalized Anxiety Disorder Using the Error-Related Negativity.

The error-related negativity (ERN) is a negative deflection in the event-related potential following a mistake that is a putative biomarker of anxiety. The study assessed the ERN as a diagnostic biomarker using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses in 96 cases with anxiety disorders (AD) and 96 matched healthy controls (HC) ages 8 to 18 years. Forty-one cases had generalized anxiety disorder (GAD); 55 cases had other anxiety disorders (OAD) without GAD. ERN amplitude was significantly increased in AD cases compared to HC. The area under the curve (AUC) in the ROC analysis was 0.64,

Electroencephalogram Reactivity to Hyperglycemia in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes.

This paper is concerned with a study of hyperglycemia on four patients with type 1 diabetes at night time. We investigated the association between hyperglycemic episodes and electroencephalogram (EEG) signals using data from the central and occipital areas. The power spectral density of the brain waves was estimated to compare the difference between hyperglycemia and euglycemia using the hyperglycemic threshold of 8.3 mmol/L. The statistical results showed that alpha and beta bands were more sensitive to hyperglycemic episodes than delta and theta bands. During hyperglycemia, whereas the alpha

P50, N100, and P200 Sensory Gating in Panic Disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) has been linked to abnormalities in information processing. However, only little evidence has been published for sensory gating in PD. Sensory gating describes the brain's ability to exclude stimuli of low relevance from higher level information processing, thereby sustaining efficient cognitive processing. Deficits in sensory gating have been associated with various psychiatric conditions, most prominently schizophrenia. In this case-control event-related potential study, we tested 32 patients with PD and 39 healthy controls in a double click paradigm. Both groups were com

CWT Based Transfer Learning for Motor Imagery Classification for Brain computer Interfaces.

BACKGROUND: The processing of brain signals for Motor imagery (MI) classification to have better accuracy is a key issue in the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). While conventional methods like Artificial neural network (ANN), Linear discernment analysis (LDA), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Support vector machine (SVM), etc. have made significant progress in terms of classification accuracy, deep transfer learning-based systems have shown the potential to outperform them. BCI can play a vital role in enabling communication with the external world for persons with motor disabilities. NEW METHODS: De

Anesthesia-Associated Periodic Discharges.

PURPOSE: Anesthetic agents have been widely used in the treatment of refractory status epilepticus and the medical management of increased intracranial pressure whenever the goal is therapeutic burst suppression. Periodic patterns typically consisting of generalized periodic discharges (GPDs) following emergence from anesthesia have been described in several case reports. However, their clinical significance and in particular whether these patterns are epileptiform remains unclear. METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospective, observational study examining EEG patterns following emergence

Ictal level of awareness in psychogenic nonepileptic seizures correlates with the experience of traumatic events in childhood: A cross sectional study.

There is a great amount of research regarding the particular ictal manifestations of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) with a focus on the differences to epileptic seizures (Vogrig et al., 2019 [4]; Tyson et al., 2018 [5]; De Paola et al., 2016 [6]). Most of the research aims to define guidelines for diagnosing PNES in differentiation from epilepsy, because this differentiation is clinically relevant for clinical neurological settings. In contrast, very few studies aimed to gain insight about particular ictal manifestations of the different semiological appearances of PNES regarding dis

A standardized nomenclature for spectrogram EEG patterns: Inter-rater agreement and correspondence with common intensive care unit EEG patterns.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the inter-rater agreement (IRA) of a standardized nomenclature for EEG spectrogram patterns, and to estimate the probability distribution of ictal-interictal continuum (IIC) patterns vs. other EEG patterns within each category in this nomenclature. METHODS: We defined seven spectrogram categories: "Solid Flames", "Irregular Flames", "Broadband-monotonous", "Narrowband-monotonous", "Stripes", "Low power", and "Artifact". Ten electroencephalographers scored 115 spectrograms and the corresponding raw EEG samples. Gwet's agreement coefficient was used to calculate IRA. RE

Increased EEG coherence in long-distance and short-distance connectivity in children with autism spectrum disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex and prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and social interaction as well as repetitive behaviors. Alterations in function connectivity are widely recognized in recent electroencephalogram (EEG) studies. However, most studies have not reached consistent conclusions, which could be due to the developmental nature and the heterogeneity of ASD. METHODS: Here, EEG coherence analysis was used in a cohort of children with ASD (n = 13) and matched typically developing controls (TD, n = 15) to e

EEG-derived pain threshold index for prediction of postoperative pain in patients undergoing laparoscopic urological surgery: a comparison with surgical pleth index.

Recently a novel pain recognition indicator derived from electroencephalogram(EEG) signals, pain threshold index(PTI) has been developed. The aim of this study was to determine whether PTI can be used for prediction of postoperative acute pain while surgical pleth index(SPI) applied as control. Eighty patients undergoing laparoscopic urological surgery under general anesthesia were enrolled. Data of SPI, PTI and a sedative index-wavelet index(WLI) were recorded within last 10 min at the end of surgery. The postoperative pain scores (NRS, numerical rating scale) were obtained. Generalized Periodic Discharges With Triphasic Morphology in the Setting of Aztreonam Neurotoxicity.

Generalized periodic discharges with triphasic morphology (GPDs + TWm) have been reported with multiple metabolic and drug toxicities. Beta-lactam antibiotics in some cases can cause neurotoxicity with GPDs + TWm on EEG. There are no reports in the literature of aztreonam causing neurotoxicity and GPDs + TWm. Here we describe GPDs + TWm and encephalopathy developing in a patient with underlying dementia and acute kidney injury who was started on aztreonam for cystitis. Neurotoxic effects of beta-lactam antibiotics have been well studied at this point, likely related to GABA receptor antagonism

Week-by-week changes in sleep EEG in healthy full-term newborns.

UNLABELLED: Spectral analysis of neonatal sleep is useful for studying brain maturation; however, most studies have analyzed conventional broad bands described for awake adults, so a distinct approach for EEG analysis may disclose new findings. STUDY OBJECTIVES: To extract independent EEG broad bands using principal component analysis (PCA) and describe week-by-week EEG changes in quiet sleep (QS) and active sleep (AS) during the first 5 weeks of postnatal life in healthy, full-term newborns. METHODS: Polysomnography of spontaneous sleep was recorded in 60 newborns in 5 groups at 41, 42, 43,

Successful epilepsy surgery for tuberous sclerosis complex evaluated by stereoelectroencephalography.

Evaluating the candidacy for epilepsy surgery in patients with tuberous sclerosis can be challenging, particularly when non-invasive investigations do not show a clear epileptogenic zone. Stereoencephalography may be useful in such cases. We present a case in which the primary epileptogenic tuber was successfully identified by stereoencephalography, which resulted in seizure freedom following epilepsy surgery. [Published with video sequences].
