Vitamin B6 in clinical neurology.

Many conditions in clinical neurology may be responsive to pyridoxine as a therapeutic agent. The current difficulty is in trying to isolate the conditions that are most likely to respond. Treating seizures is a major part of a neurologic practice. Our current therapeutic agents are only partially successful and limited by multiple side effects. One problem is that patients often have to take these agents for an entire lifetime, further raising the risk of toxicity. If pyridoxine supplementation can improve the efficacy of currently used medications, it will be gladly accepted into our therape

The abortion and contraceptive behavior: results of the all-Russian Research.

The problem of abortion is actual in all spheres of public life. Despite the fact that in Russia, according to the Ministry of Health, the number of abortions has decreased by 30% over the past five years, there is demand from society and public authorities to strengthen the national demographic security, to search for corresponding reserves and to strengthen positive dynamics of demographic indices on permanent long-term basis. The abortions significantly and negatively affect birth rate and woman health. To make proper managerial decisions in this area requires analyzing such complex social

Coping Behavior in Patients with Parkinson's Disease Prior to Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation and Association with Psychiatric Symptoms, Quality of Life and Neuropsychological Status.

BACKGROUND: Coping behavior of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients undergoing subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation (STN-DBS) is poorly understood. Identifying patients with ineffective coping could help prepare them better for surgery. OBJECTIVES: To clarify coping of PD patients preoperatively and the relation with psychiatric symptoms, quality of life (QoL), and cognition. METHODS: Scores of 158 STN-DBS candidates were retrospectively reviewed, including the Utrecht coping list (UCL), Symptom Checklist (SCL90-R), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI2NL), PD Questionnaire 39 Summary Index (PDQ39-SI)

Forecasting influenza hemagglutinin mutations through the lens of anomaly detection.

The influenza virus hemagglutinin is an important part of the virus attachment to the host cells. The hemagglutinin proteins are one of the genetic regions of the virus with a high potential for mutations. Due to the importance of predicting mutations in producing effective and low-cost vaccines, solutions that attempt to approach this problem have recently gained significant attention. A historical record of mutations has been used to train predictive models in such solutions. However, the imbalance between mutations and preserved proteins is a big challenge for the development of such models

Fibril deformation under load of the rabbit Achilles tendon and medial collateral ligament femoral entheses.

Microscopic visualization under load of the region connecting ligaments/tendons to bone, the enthesis, has been performed previously; however, specific investigation of individual fibril deformation may add insight to such studies. Detailed visualization of fibril deformation would inform on the mechanical strategies employed by this tissue in connecting two mechanically disparate materials. Clinically, an improved understanding of enthesis mechanics may help guide future restorative efforts for torn or injured ligaments/tendons, where the enthesis is often a point of weakness. In this study,

Child Abuse and Neglect: Do We know enough? A Cross-sectional Study of Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior of Dentists regarding Child Abuse and Neglect in Pune, India.

INTRODUCTION: Child abuse and neglect (CAN) is a significant global problem with a serious impact on the victims throughout their lives. Dentists have the unique opportunity to address this problem. However, reporting such cases has become a sensitive issue due to the uncertainty of the diagnosis. The authors are testing the knowledge of the dentists toward CAN and also trying to question the efforts of the educational institutions to improve this knowledge for the better future of the younger generation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaire data were distributed to 1,106 members regarding th

Mental Health Problems in a School Setting in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: 10-20% of children and adolescents have a mental health problem of some type. Manifestations such as attention deficits, cognitive disturbances, lack of motivation, and negative mood all adversely affect scholastic development. It is often unclear what factors associated with school affect children's mental development and what preventive measures and interventions at school might be effective. METHODS: This review is based on systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and randomized and non-randomized controlled trials that were retrieved by a selective search in the PubMed, PsycInfo, an

Treating Problem Gambling Samples with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Interventions: A Clinical Trial.

The problem gambling (PG) intervention literature is characterised by a variety of psychological treatments and approaches, with varying levels of evidence (PGRTC in Guideline for screening, assessment and treatment in problem and pathological gambling. Monash University, Melbourne, 2011). A recent PG systematic review (Maynard et al. in Res Soc Work Pract, 2015. doi: 10.1177/1049731515606977 ) and the success of mindfulness-based interventions to effectively treat disorders commonly comorbid with PG suggested mindfulness-based interventions may be effective for treating PG. The current study

[Frequency and causes of premature termination (drop-out) during in-patient opiate detoxification].

A typical problem concerning in-patient detoxification is the high drop-out rate. This phenomenon represents a significant problem for both the patient and the therapeutic team, as it is a factor which reduces motivation. While several studies confirm a positive shift of early drop-out behavior with the aid of methadone-supported detoxification, the overall drop-out rate still saw no improvement. Unexpectedly the latter rate was found to be around 50 %. The aim of the present study was to determine the sociodemographic, dispositional and addiction-related factors, as well as subjective ratings

Observed Maternal Positive Affect Responsivity Prospectively Predicts Lower Internalizing Problems in Toddlers of Mothers With Depression: A Dynamic Systems Analysis.

Toddlers of mothers with depression are at risk for wide-ranging negative outcomes across development, including early emerging internalizing and externalizing problems. These children may be especially sensitive to individual differences in (positive) affective parenting, with implications for enduring psychosocial outcomes. Maternal attunement to child positive emotions may be an important protective factor buffering against risk for psychopathology in vulnerable youth. Illuminating the role of such subtle, moment-to-moment parenting behaviors in attenuating risk across early development is

Survey on awareness of sleep medicine among members of the Japanese Society of Neurology.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-wake problems and sleep-related disorders, which are common attributes of neurological diseases, often remain under-recognized and under-treated. Insufficient education in sleep medicine might contribute to this gap. METHODS: The Sleep Medicine Section of the Japanese Society of Neurology conducted a nationwide, web-based survey of its full-member physicians (N = 9,703), assessing neurologists' education, clinical practice, and interest in sleep medicine. RESULTS: Of the 904 survey participants, only 10% considered their undergraduate education on sleep-wake problems and sl

The Role of School Engagement in the Link Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Adolescent Mental Health.

PURPOSE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increase the risk for poor adolescent mental health, yet mediational pathways that connect ACEs with mental health problems remain unaddressed. Our study investigates whether school involvement and disengagement mediate the longitudinal associations between ACEs and adolescent mental health problems. METHODS: Using data from the longitudinal Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, this study included 7,558 adolescents aged 9-10 years at baseline. ACEs were a cumulative risk score of 21 adverse experiences (e.g., emotional abuse, community vi

Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and American Community Survey Estimates of Vision Difficulty Prevalence.

IMPORTANCE: Inconsistent estimates of self-reported vision impairment across survey sources may cause confusion about the true size of the population with vision problems. OBJECTIVE: To explain why the American Community Survey (ACS) and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) produce different prevalence estimates for self-reported vision problems in the US, despite using the same question wording. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a cross-sectional analysis of the 2021 ACS and BRFSS using subgroup analysis and decomposition. Respondents were from 49 states and the Dist

Affective dependence, self-regulation, and alcohol problems: Between- and within-person associations.

Positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA) are associated with goal pursuit in addition to dysregulated behavior. Affective dependence (i.e., the correlation between PA and NA) may be a marker for good self-regulation on the one hand (weaker dependence) and poor self-regulation on the other (stronger dependence). This study sought to elucidate the role of affective dependence as a predictor of goal pursuit and alcohol problems at the within- and between-person levels. Participants were 100 college students aged 18-25 years, who drank alcohol at least moderately, and completed a 21-day ecolo

The impact of family stress and resilience on child development: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Children grow up spending most of their time within the family social environment, where they can experience stressful situations such as marital conflict, a non-cohesive environment, parental alcohol use disorder, parental depression, and other parental mental health issues. All these factors are associated with children's developmental delays. We aimed to conduct a scoping review on associations between family stress and family resilience and child development delays to examine familial conditions associated with child development. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of observ

Comparing the effectiveness of three substance use interventions for youth with and without homelessness experiences prior to treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Many adolescents and young adults receiving substance use treatment have experienced or are at risk for homelessness. It is unknown whether specific treatment approaches are more or less effective for youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) compared to stably housed youth. The present study compared the effectiveness of the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach, Motivational Enhancement Therapy combined with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (MET/CBT), and Treatment as Usual (TAU) for these two groups. Further subgroup differences were investigated by age, sex, and sexual and gender
