The mucin isolated from gastric secretion of duodenal ulcer patients before and after therapy with a new antiulcer agent, ebrotidine, was assessed for H. pylori aggregating activity and macromolecular organization. Analyses of mucin molecular forms revealed that successful therapy with ebrotidine was accompanied by a 2.6-2.9-fold increase in the high molecular weight mucin form. BACKGROUND: After bone marrow transplantation various ocular diseases have been described. Ocular involvement is very common in patients with chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease (GvHD). These patients show clinical and histological evidence of a dry-eye condition in 60-100 per cent. A severe complication is the development of a corneal ulcer with possible corneal perforation. A 10-year experience with the use of vagotomy with the organ-preserving intervention in the treatment of patients with a bleeding pyloroduodenal ulcer who were treated for urgent and emergency indications is presented. The postoperative mortality was 8.1%. An excellent and good long-term result was noted in 88% of the patients, an unsatisfactory one--in 12%.

A case of active peptic ulcer disease in a primigravida at 29 weeks' gestation is presented, with a literature review. This particular case was complicated by gastric outlet obstruction, a complication which has not been previously reported in the obstetric literature. Although an uncommon diagnosis in pregnancy, the investigations for peptic ulcer disease should be actively pursued. Treatment can prevent serious complications.

Thirty-two duodenal ulcer perforations were treated by suture and supraselective vagotomy. Perioperative mortality was nil. The recurrence rate was 6.2% against 17% after elective supraselective vagotomy performed by the same surgeons during the same period. Results of this technique for treatment of perforated duodenal ulcer are compared with those of 28 simple sutures and 32 truncal vagotomies.

A total of 30 patients (29 with peptic ulcer and 2 with erosive gastroduodenitis) received lecedil, a new famotidine blocker of histamine H2-receptors. The effect of the drug was not related to the dose regimen (20 mg twice or 40 once a day). In good tolerance side effects were not reported. Healing of duodenal ulcer occurred within 4 and 5 treatment weeks in 17 (85.0%) and 19 (95.0%) out of 20 patients, respectively, within 6 and 8 treatment weeks ulcer healed in 5 and 6 out of 8 gastric ulcer patients, respectively.

On 25 cases (gastric ulcer 14 cases and duodenal ulcer 11 cases) of the intractable ulcer which was H. pylori-positive, we eradicated H. pylori. The eradication was done during 14 days by a triple therapy: bismuth subnitrate 2.0 g, metronidazole 0.75 g, AMPC 0.75 g/day). A case is reported of progressive inner layer slough of the stomach antrum resulting in free perforation following endoscopic injection hemostasis of ulcer bleeding using a total of 5 ml polidocanol.
