This paper investigates the relationship between pregnancy rates and body weight of 1005 women using a vaginal ring releasing 20 micrograms levonorgestrel per 24 hours. While the overall pregnancy rate at one year was 3.7%, it was found that women have an increasing risk of pregnancy with increasing body weight. For example, a woman of 40 kg has an estimated pregnancy rate of 1.7% in contrast to 9.8% for a woman of 80 kg weight.

Severe stomatitis is a common problem encountered during either radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Most therapeutic regimens are empirical, with no scientific basis. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of various topical solutions in the treatment of radiation- or chemotherapy-induced stomatitis. Transit times and distribution modalities of an oily mixture used as a vehicle for drugs administered by rectal perfusion in topical therapy in patients with uncomplicated diverticulitis of the colon have been examined. X-ray study makes it possible to state that the technique is mainly indicated in descending colon and sigmoid localisations, segments in which the oily mixture distributes homogeneously and massively in all patients treated.

Dithranol (anthralin) is one of the basic compounds used in the treatment of psoriasis vulgaris. However, in outpatients its use is largely restricted as it may cause discoloration of skin, clothes, and bedding as well as significant skin irritation. The combination of dithranol with urea results in a better benefit/side-effect ratio. Even at relatively low dithranol concentrations (0.1%/0.2%) combined preparations have been found to be effective over several weeks of application. The therapeutic results of such treatment are comparable to those of topical glucocorticosteroid preparations.

During the topical treatment of 45 patients, who had extensive forms of alopecia areata, with the allergen diphencyprone, 3 of them (6.7%) developed vitiligo. Two were females and 1 male aged 53, 19 and 28 years respectively. None of these patients had a personal or family history of vitiligo. A 29-year-old woman who had successfully used extended-wear soft contact lens for 7 years was found to have a corneal ulcer due to Mycobacterium chelonei. Unique to this presentation was the lack of a history of severe corneal trauma, prior surgery or immunocompromised tissue. Despite in-vitro resistance of the organism to amikacin sulfate, topical therapy with this antibiotic led to a complete cure without the need for surgical intervention.

Using radioimmunoassay techniques, we measured the amounts of prostaglandin E (PGE) in the aqueous humor and vitreous body of 22 phakic and ten aphakic rabbit eyes. Lenses were removed from rabbit eyes using an extracapsular technique. Animals were in three groups; no treatment (NT), post-treatment (PT) and pre- and post-treatment (PPT). The QA process is recommended to anyone seeking to upgrade patient care delivery. It clarifies theories and gives substance to progressive ideas being considered for adoption. Certainly it tends to prevent premature and ill-conceived presentations. When an action is instituted, QA provides the framework that can be used to facilitate the change. As an afterthought, but as a welcome benefit, QA can foster teamwork and camaraderie among staff who assist in problem solving or bringing an idea to fruition.

In a biometrically controlled study on psoriatic patients, we investigated the efficacy and tolerability of bifonazole 1% plus urea 20% cream. Two cases of mercury poisoning with predominantly dermatological symptoms are reported. The mercury intoxication was caused by the application of an over-the-counter metallic mercury ointment. A study on the use of thiabendazole in the treatment of bovine dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton verrucosum was conducted. Fifteen infected animals were included in the study. Ten animals were treated with a thiabendazole-DMSO-salicylic acid mixture and 5 animals were left untreated as controls. The thiabendazole mixture was used topically on the skin lesions.
