The incidence of inclusion of the sigmoid colon and small bowel in the planning target volume in radiotherapy for prostate cancer.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In radiotherapy for prostate cancer, the rectum is considered the dose-limiting organ. The incidence of overlap between the sigmoid colon and/or small bowel and the planning target volume (PTV) as well as the dose to sigmoid colon and small bowel were investigated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The CT data of 75 prostate cancer patients were analyzed. The clinical target volume (CTV) consisted of prostate and seminal vesicles. The PTV was defined as a three-dimensional expansion of the CTV with a 10-mm margin in craniocaudal and a 7-mm margin in the other directions. All patie

Free-Breathing 3D Whole Heart and Aorta Cine MRI Without Contrast Agent-Comparison to Clinical Standard.

BACKGROUND: The demand for cardiac MRI is increasing with the growing burden of cardiovascular disease. However, conventional protocols require sequential acquisitions for multi-breath-hold 2D cine and 3D MR angiography (MRA), which is time-consuming. In addition, breath-hold 2D cine can be challenging for patients with limited breath-hold capacity. PURPOSE: To further develop and evaluate a free-breathing 3D whole-heart cine MRI technique for simultaneous assessment of cardiac function and aortic anatomy in a single non-contrast acquisition at 1.5 T. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: Twen

Improving the efficiency of brain metastases monitoring using a semi-automatic colorimetric longitudinal tool.

BACKGROUND: After stereotactic radiotherapy for brain metastases, MRI follow-up is essential to detect lesion variations. Traditional diagnostic methods, including volumetric changes often face limitations in precision and timeliness. PURPOSE: To evaluate the performance of an automatic colorimetric segmentation tool (LOBI, IntellisSpace Portal viewer, Version 11, Philips Healthcare) against volumetric analysis in detecting radiological progression (RP) and to explore their potential integration into routine practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From a retrospective cohort of 125 patients and 298

Native myocardial T1 mapping using rapid 1.5T T1FLASH and T1 MOLLI during breath-hold and free-breathing.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative myocardial T1 mapping is an established technique in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR). However, conventional T1 mapping requires relatively long breath-holds (BH), which may lead to breathing artifacts and reduced image quality in patients with limited BH capacity. The T1 fast low angle shot (T1FLASH) sequence enables myocardial T1 mapping with shorter BH durations. METHODS: In this prospective study, 14 healthy adult volunteers (8 female; mean age 27 ± 4 years) underwent myocardial T1 mapping at 1.5 T using modified Look-Locker inversion recovery with motion c

Exploring multifractal-based features for mild Alzheimer's disease classification.

PURPOSE: Multifractal applications to resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) time series for diagnosing Alzheimer's disease (AD) are still limited. We aim to address two issues: (I) if and what multifractal features are sufficiently discriminative to detect AD from the healthy; (II) if AD classification could be further improved by combining multifractal features with traditional features in this field. METHODS: Rs-fMRI data of 25 AD patients and 38 normal controls were analyzed. A set of multifractal features were systematically investigated. Traditional features in monofractal, linear, and

Usefulness of PRESTO magnetic resonance imaging for the differentiation of schwannoma and meningioma in the cerebellopontine angle.

The principles of echo-shifting with a train of observations (PRESTO) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technique employs an MR sequence that sensitively detects susceptibility changes in the brain. The effectiveness of PRESTO MR imaging was examined for distinguishing between cerebellopontine angle (CPA) schwannomas and meningiomas in 24 patients with CPA tumors, 12 with vestibular schwannomas, and 12 with meningiomas. Histopathological study of surgical specimens showed that 11 of the 12 schwannomas contained hemosiderin deposits and all had microhemorrhages. One meningioma contained hemosider

Costs of control: decreased motor cortex engagement during a Go/NoGo task in Tourette's syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by an impaired ability to inhibit unwanted behaviour. Although the presence of chronic motor and vocal tics defines Tourette's syndrome, other distinctive behavioural features like echo- and coprophenomena, and non-obscene socially inappropriate behaviour are also core features. We investigated neuronal activation during stimulus-driven execution and inhibition of prepared movements in Tourette's syndrome. To this end, we performed event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging and structural diffusion tensor imag

The lower cranial nerves: IX, X, XI, XII.

The lower cranial nerves innervate the pharynx and larynx by the glossopharyngeal (CN IX) and vagus (CN X) (mixed) nerves, and provide motor innervation of the muscles of the neck by the accessory nerve (CN XI) and the tongue by the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII). The symptomatology provoked by an anomaly is often discrete and rarely in the forefront. As with all cranial nerves, the context and clinical examinations, in case of suspicion of impairment of the lower cranial nerves, are determinant in guiding the imaging. In fact, the impairment may be located in the brain stem, in the peribulbar cis

Preoperative identification of the facial nerve in patients with large cerebellopontine angle tumors using high-density diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECT: Facial nerve paresis can be a devastating complication following resection of large (> 2.5 cm) cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors. The authors have developed and used a new high-density diffusion tensor imaging (HD-DT imaging) method, aimed at preoperatively identifying the location and course of the facial nerve in relation to large CPA tumors. Their study objective was to preoperatively identify the facial nerve in patients with large CPA tumors and compare their HD-DT imaging method with a traditional standard DT imaging method and correlate with intraoperative findings. METHODS:

Regional grey and white matter volumetric changes in myalgic encephalomyelitis (chronic fatigue syndrome): a voxel-based morphometry 3 T MRI study.

OBJECTIVE: It is not established whether myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is associated with structural brain changes. The aim of this study was to investigate this by conducting the largest voxel-based morphometry study to date in CFS. METHODS: High-resolution structural 3 T cerebral MRI scanning was carried out in 26 patients with CFS and 26 age- and gender-matched healthy volunteers. Voxel-wise generalised linear modelling was applied to the processed MR data using permutation-based non-parametric testing, forming clusters at t>2.3 and testing clusters for significa

Regional sensitivity and coupling of BOLD and CBV changes during stimulation of rat brain.

Functional MRI of rat brain was performed at 2 Tesla following intravenous injection of cocaine in order to 1) determine if changes in CBV and changes in BOLD signal were regionally coupled in brain parenchyma, and 2) compare the sensitivities of these imaging methods across different brain structures. Percent changes in CBV and BOLD relaxation rate were spatially and temporally coupled during this graded brain activation. The use of contrast agent increased functional sensitivity in all parenchymal brain structures, with a strong but predictable dependence on the resting-state blood volume fr
