Evaluation of a challenge testing protocol to assess the stability of ready-to-eat cooked meat products against growth of Listeria monocytogenes.

Challenge testing of ready-to-eat (RTE) foods with Listeria monocytogenes is recommended to assess the potential for growth. The present study was undertaken to evaluate a protocol for challenge testing applied to RTE cooked meat products. In order to choose L. monocytogenes strains with a representative behaviour, initially, the variability of the response of multiple L. monocytogenes strains of human and food origin to different stress and growth conditions was established. The strains were not inhibited in their growth at moderate acid pH (5.25) and the four strains tested in particular sho

Dynamics from a time series: can we extract the phase resetting curve from a time series?

Recordings of the membrane potential from a bursting neuron were used to reconstruct the phase curve for that neuron for a limited set of perturbations. These perturbations were inhibitory synaptic conductance pulses able to shift the membrane potential below the most hyperpolarized level attained in the free running mode. The extraction of the phase resetting curve from such a one-dimensional time series requires reconstruction of the periodic activity in the form of a limit cycle attractor. Resetting was found to have two components. In the first component, if the pulse was applied during a

Autonomic blockade unmasks maturational differences in rate-dependent atrioventricular nodal conduction and facilitation in the mouse.

INTRODUCTION: In large animals, rate-dependent AV nodal (AVN) properties of conduction are modulated by autonomic inputs. In this study, we investigated whether the properties of AVN conduction and facilitation are altered by autonomic blockade in the mouse and whether this effect is age dependent. METHODS AND RESULTS: Young (age 4-6 weeks; n = 11) and adult (age 8-9 months; n = 11) female mice underwent in vivo electrophysiologic testing, before and after autonomic blockade. After autonomic blockade, the adult mice had significantly longer AVN effective refractory period (AVNERP; 67 +/- 14 m

Repeated spinal flexion modulates the flexion-relaxation phenomenon.

OBJECTIVES: To determine if repeated spinal flexion and loading modulate the deactivation of lumbar muscles near full flexion (flexion-relaxation). DESIGN: Repeated measures experimental study of the effect of repetitive trunk flexion and added mass on the flexion-relaxation phenomenon. BACKGROUND: Repeated flexion causes muscular fatigue, creep of passive tissues and diminished protective reflexes. However, flexion-relaxation has not been studied in repeated trunk flexion, and could be related to the increased risk of low-back disorders. METHODS: Thirty healthy young subjects performed 100

Rapid neck muscle adaptation alters the head kinematics of aware and unaware subjects undergoing multiple whiplash-like perturbations.

To examine whether habituation confounds the study of whiplash injury using human subjects, we quantified changes in the magnitude and temporal development of the neck muscle electromyogram and peak linear and angular head/torso kinematics of subjects exposed to sequential whiplash-like perturbations. Forty-four seated subjects (23F, 21M) underwent 11 consecutive forward horizontal perturbations (peak sled acceleration=1.5 g). Electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded over the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and cervical paraspinal (PARA) muscles with surface electrodes, and head and torso kinem

Ontogenetic and regional morphologic variations in the turkey ulna diaphysis: implications for functional adaptation of cortical bone.

This study examines relationships between bone morphology and mechanically mediated strain/fluid-flow patterns in an avian species. Using mid-diaphyseal transverse sections of domestic turkey ulnae (from 11 subadults and 11 adults), we quantified developmental changes in predominant collagen fiber orientation (CFO), mineral content (%ash), and microstructure in cortical octants or quadrants (i.e., %ash). Geometric parameters were examined using whole mid-diaphyseal cross-sections. The ulna undergoes habitual bending and torsion, and demonstrates nonuniform matrix fluid-flow patterns, and high

Better long-term functional adaptation to the child's size with pediatric compared to adult kidney donors.

BACKGROUND: Pros and cons for pediatric kidney donors have been debated, especially with respect to survival rates. However, the effect of donor age on kidney function remains conflicting. The aim of this study was to compare short and long-term renal function according to the age of the donor, in grafts from adult living related (LRD), adult cadaveric and pediatric cadaveric donors (PedCD) following pediatric transplantation (Tx). METHODS: One hundred and thirty-four children were repeatedly followed for four years, and 44 were followed for eight years. Absolute and relative glomerular filtr

Perception of tilt (somatogravic illusion) in response to sustained linear acceleration during space flight.

During the 1998 Neurolab mission (STS-90), four astronauts were exposed to interaural and head vertical (dorsoventral) linear accelerations of 0.5 g and 1 g during constant velocity rotation on a centrifuge, both on Earth and during orbital space flight. Subjects were oriented either left-ear-out or right-ear-out (Gy centrifugation), or lay supine along the centrifuge arm with their head off-axis (Gz centrifugation). Pre-flight centrifugation, producing linear accelerations of 0.5 g and 1 g along the Gy (interaural) axis, induced illusions of roll-tilt of 20 degrees and 34 degrees for gravito-

Endothelin-A-receptors in human aorta and pulmonary arteries are downregulated in patients with cardiovascular disease: an adaptive response to increased levels of endothelin-1?

Circulating levels of endothelin-1 (ET-1) are elevated in a number of pathophysiological conditions. Our aim was to determine the effect of overexpression of the peptide on ET receptors in human blood vessels. Aorta and pulmonary arteries were removed from patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (CDM), ischaemic heart disease (IHD), and primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) and compared with controls. Sections of the medial (smooth muscle) layer were incubated with [125I]ET-1 and increasing concentrations of FR139317, an endothelin-A- (ET(A)) selective antagonist. FR139317 competed for the binding

Anoxia tolerance of con-familial tiger beetle larvae is associated with differences in energy flow and anaerobiosis.

In this study, we compared survivorship, heat dissipation and biochemical features of anaerobiosis of two tiger beetle species (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) exposed to anoxia. One species commonly experiences environmental immersion from rainfall and snowmelt (Cicindela togata), and the habitat of the other (Amblycheila cylindriformis) is not prone to flooding. The ancestral genus, A. cylindriformis, survives anoxia for only 2 days at 25 degrees C. In response to anoxia, these larvae immediately lose locomotory abilities, tissue concentrations of ATP fall precipitously within 12 h, and significan

Direct fetal glucocorticoid treatment alters postnatal adaptation in premature newborn baboons.

Abnormalities of premature newborn adaptation after preterm birth result in significant perinatal mortality and morbidity. We assessed the effects of short-term (24 h) fetal betamethasone exposure on preterm newborn baboon pulmonary and cardiovascular regulation and renal sodium handling during the first 24 h after birth. Male fetal baboons (Papio) (124-day gestation, term 185 days) received ultrasound-guided intramuscular injections of saline (n = 5) or betamethasone (0.5 mg/kg; n = 5). Fetuses were cesarean delivered 24 h later, treated with 100 mg/kg surfactant, and ventilated by adjusting

Mucosal changes in interposed colon segment as gastric substitute following gastrectomy in rats.

BACKGROUND: An interposed colon segment has been clinically reconstructed as a gastric substitute. The purpose of this study is to establish a rat model of colonic interposition and to investigate serial mucosal changes and adaptation of interposed colon mucosa under prolonged exposure to bile and pancreatic juice reflux. METHODS: About 80% of the glandular stomach was resected, and a 3-cm segment of the transverse colon interposed isoperistaltically between the remnant stomach and duodenum. Epithelial proliferation, aberrant crypt foci (ACF), and tumors in the interposed colon segment were i

Congestive heart failure: differential adaptation of the diaphragm and latissimus dorsi.

Diaphragm and latissimus dorsi muscle functions, histochemistries, and morphometries were studied in anesthetized male Yucatan minipigs with congestive heart failure (CHF) induced by supraventricular tachycardia (n = 5). Sham-operated animals served as a control group (n = 5). In CHF animals, transdiaphragmatic pressure measured during supramaximal phrenic stimulation was reduced by 40% at low frequencies (< or = 20 Hz) and by 60% at higher frequencies. Twitch amplitude and half-relaxation time were also decreased. The cross-sectional areas of type I, IIa, and IIb fibers were reduced in the di

The effects of prolonged weightlessness and reduced gravity environments on human survival.

The manned exploration of the solar system and the surfaces of some of the smaller planets and larger satellites requires that we are able to keep the adverse human physiological response to long term exposure to near zero and greatly reduced gravity environments within acceptable limits consistent with metabolic function. This paper examines the physiological changes associated with microgravity conditions with particular reference to the weightless demineralizatoin of bone (WDB). It is suggested that many of these changes are the result of physical/mechanical processes and are not primarily

Morphofunctional changes in gastrointestinal tract of rats due to cafeteria diet.

Female rats fed a cafeteria diet from birth developed obesity at 60 days of age and their stomach, small intestine and caecum were enlarged when compared with controls, i.e. these regions had greater food storage capacity. In spite of the enlargement, these regions had similar or reduced weight and linear density, which is seen as proof of reduced mechanical performances. Cafeteria diet produced increased glucose duodenal absorption in older animals unlike the typical reduction known in controls. Tryptophan absorption was maintained high in adulthood, compensating for the low structural nutrit

[Pharyngeal obstruction and the functional adaptation of the natural posture of the head and the hyoid bone in sleep apnea syndrome].

Variations in natural head posture (NHP) and hyoid bone (HB) positioning impart changes in the size and shape of the pharyngeal airways. In SAS, which was shown to be correlated with detrimental craniofacial anatomical conditions, control of pharyngeal permeability is lost during sleep. The aim of this study was determine if functional adaptation of NHP and HB position to these detrimental conditions could be observed, using Bonferonni probabilities, in a cephalometric comparison of 38 SAS adults in the wakeful state and a control group of 38 healthy adults. Since HB relationships with craniof

[The possible mechanisms of the adaptation of microbial populations to low positive temperatures].

Biologically low temperature was studied for its effect on the survival of populations and their biochemical and molecular-genetical state. The research was carried out on Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Shigella sonnei models. It is established that the process of low-temperature adaptation of the populations may occur either at the level of the whole population with participation of inducible cold isoenzymes or at the level of a part of population, the temperature being a selection factor of the adapted cells.

Adaptation of HCO-3 and NH+4 transport in rat MTAL: effects of chronic metabolic acidosis and Na+ intake.

In vitro microperfusion experiments were performed to determine whether chronic metabolic acidosis or chronic alterations in sodium intake cause adaptive changes in bicarbonate or ammonium transport in the medullary thick ascending limb (MTAL) of the rat. In all experiments, MTAL were studied under standard conditions in vitro with 25 mM bicarbonate in perfusate and bath. Thus changes in transport rates reflect adaptive changes in the intrinsic transport properties of the tubule cells. Chronic metabolic acidosis (induced by oral NH4Cl loading) increased MTAL bicarbonate absorption by 53% and i
