Impact of variant pancreatic arterial anatomy and overlap in regional perfusion on the interpretation of selective arterial calcium stimulation with hepatic venous sampling for preoperative localization of occult insulinoma.

BACKGROUND: To determine the impact of variant pancreatic arterial anatomy and overlap in regional perfusion on the interpretation of selective arterial calcium stimulation (SACST) with hepatic venous sampling for preoperative localization of occult insulinoma. METHODS: An institutional review board-approved retrospective review was undertaken of 42 patients with surgically confirmed, occult insulinoma who underwent SACST from January 1996 to March 2014. Location of the insulinoma was predicted initially based on the biochemical results of SACST alone according to Doppman's criteria. Pancreat…

[3.0T MRI with a high resolution protocol for the study of benign disease of the anus and rectum. Part 2: Anorectal inflammatory disease. Postsurgical anatomy and complications after treatment].

Benign anorectal disease comprises a broad group of processes with very diverse origins; these processes may be congenital or acquired as well as inflammatory or tumor related. However, benign anorectal disease has received less attention in the scientific literature than malignant disease. In this second part of this image-based review of benign anorectal disease, we describe the most common inflammatory and fistulous diseases, the postsurgical anatomy, and complications that can occur after surgical treatment or radiotherapy for anorectal disease.

Symmetry of vascular pedicle anatomy in the first web space of the foot related to toe harvest: clinical observations in 85 simultaneous bilateral second-toe transfer patients.

BACKGROUND: Toe-to-hand transfer is an accepted procedure for reconstruction of thumbs and fingers. Although the vascular anatomy of the toe has been well studied, its symmetry on both feet has not previously been reported. METHODS: A retrospective review of 85 cases of simultaneous bilateral toe-to-hand transfers, performed between 1984 and 2002, was carried out. All of the pedicles were dissected in a retrograde fashion. RESULTS: A symmetric vascular pedicle anatomy was found in 78.8 percent of the patients, whereas 21.2 percent of the patients had an asymmetric vascular pattern. CONCLUSI…

Anatomical and microscopic evaluation of the liver in migratory shoveler ducks (Spatula clypeata): A multi-modal study using gross anatomy, vascular casting, morphometric analysis, and histochemistry techniques.

This study was carried out to explore the anatomical and microscopic features of the liver in shoveler ducks using gross and vascular anatomical casting, morphometric analysis, and histochemical techniques. This study was applied to twenty-six adult ducks. The liver, located in the middle-third of the coelomic cavity, had a larger right lobe and no further subdivided lobes, housing the gallbladder in a cystic fossa on the right lobe's visceral surface. The liver's venous drainage occurs through the hepatic veins (right, left, and middle) along with accessory and umbilical veins. The intrahepat

Nested Semi-Transparent Isosurface Simulated Volume-Rendering (NESTIS-VR) - An efficient on-device rendering approach for Augmented Reality headsets increasing surgeon confidence of kidney donor arterial anatomy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Volume-renderings of computed tomography or magnetic resonance angiograms (MRAs) are routinely used by surgeons in the preoperative assessment of vascular anatomy in kidney donors. Stereoscopic headsets (OST-HMD) like Microsoft HoloLens allow intuitive interaction with three-dimensional content for more intuitive comprehension, but do not allow real-time ray-casting volume-rendering of medical volume datasets on-device due to computational limitations. METHODS: We introduce NEsted Semi-Transparent Isosurface Simulated Volume-Rendering (NESTIS-VR), as an on-device alt…

Comparative Anatomy of the Nasal Cavity in the Common Dolphin Delphinus delphis L., Striped Dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba M. and Pilot Whale Globicephala melas T.: A Developmental Study.

Our goal was to analyze the main anatomical structures of the dolphin external nose and nasal cavity from fetal developmental stages to adult. Endoscopy was used to study the common development of the external nose and the melon, and nasal mucosa. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and anatomical sections were correlated with anatomical sections. Computed tomography (CT) was used to generate 3D reconstructions of the nasal bones and nasal cavities to study its development. Dissections, histological and pathological studies were carried out on the nasal mucosa to understand its function. These re

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided antegrade procedures for managing bile duct stones in patients with surgically altered anatomy: Comparison with double-balloon enteroscopy-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (with video).

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM: Management of bile duct stones (BDSs) in patients with surgically altered anatomies (SAAs) remains challenging. An endoscopic ultrasound-guided antegrade (EUS-AG) procedure and double-balloon enteroscopy-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (DB-ERC) have been used to remove BDSs from patients with SAAs. However, few comparative data have been reported. Therefore, we compared the efficacy and safety of the techniques. METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective study. Patients with SAA who underwent the EUS-AG procedure or DB-ERC to remove intra- or extr

Cavotricuspid Isthmus Anatomy Determines The Success Of Remote Controlled Magnetic Bidirectional Block: A Comparsion Between Magnetic 8-mm Solid Tip And 3.5-mm Magnetic Irrigated Tip Catheter.

BACKGROUND: Cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) anatomy is associated with a great inter-individual variability. The aim of this study was to compare the magnetic 8-mm tip catheter versus the novel 3.5-mm magnetic irrigated tip catheter in achieving bidirectional right atrial isthmus block and to evaluate the impact of the underlying CTI anatomy on success rate. METHODS: A detailed remote controlled 3-dimensional electroanatomic (3D EA) right atrial reconstruction was performed using the magnetic navigation system with special emphasis to the CTI. CTI anatomy was evaluated utilizing the 3D EA map and…

Pudendal Nerve Identified on Sectioned Images of Female Cadaveric Pelvis.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an anatomical atlas made of serially sectioned images of a female cadaver that clearly demonstrated the pudendal nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The courses of the pudendal nerve, internal pudendal artery, and internal pudendal vein were observed on the sectioned images of a female cadaver. The spatial relationship between the nerve and blood vessels was interpreted. RESULTS: Traces of the structures on the sectioned images showed that the sources of the sciatic and pudendal nerves were the fourth lumbar nerve to the second sacral nerve and the second to the fourth sacral

Inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of multi-slice CT and three-dimensional reconstructed imaging analysis of mesenteric vascular anatomy for planning and performing complete mesocolic excision.

AIM: Complete mesocolic excision (CME) for colon cancer has been associated with improved oncological outcomes but requires a detailed understanding of complex mesenteric vasculature. Three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed models derived from patient imaging could enhance preoperative anatomical comprehension, enabling safer, precision CME. METHODS: In this two-phase, blinded, crossover study, four expert CME surgeons evaluated mesenteric vascular anatomy on CT scans and 3D models. In phase 1, surgeons assessed 66 cases, while 20 were re-evaluated in phase 2. The primary outcome measure was int…

Successful transcatheter closure of a residual patent ductus arteriosus with complex anatomy after surgical ligation using an amplatzer ductal occluder guided by live three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography.

Residual patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) after surgical ligation is not common, but the anatomy of the residual duct may be distorted by the surgical ligation resulting in a difficult transcatheter closure. Such distorted anatomy of the duct may not be demonstrated by the two-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography (2D TEE). Fortunately, live 3D TEE provided the precise anatomy of the elongated distorted residual duct, and as in the case presented herein, guided the Amplatzer ductal occluder (ADO). We concluded that live 3D TEE provided novel images of complex residual ducts and successful…
