An outbreak of listeriosis occurred in five-week-old lambs in a flock of 200 Dorset ewes and 240 lambs in-wintered. Nine lambs were lost within a period of 10 days. No cases of stillbirth or abortion or cerebral listeriosis occurred in the ewes. Silage had been fed on this farm to both cattle and sheep for 10 years without any previous problems. A description of the outbreak and the findings are reported.

Encapsulated larvae of Trichinella spiralis were found in wild-trapped, Microtus pennsylvanicus and Sigmodon hispidus. In addition, Peromyscus leucopus and Mus musculus again were found infected. These mammals were trapped from a farm site in Henrico County, Virginia, remote from known potential sources of trichinosis. The possible zoonotic relationship between wild rodent trichinosis and swine trichinosis is discussed.

201 red foxes, 18 brown rats, 1 muskrat, 1 red squirrel, 1 wood mouse, 8 hares, 3 rabbits, 2 wild boars, 4 roe deers, 1 chamois, 3 reindeers (for farming) were examined by peptic digestion to detect trichinosis. Eight Foxes captured in the east and south-east of France were found infested by this parasite.

An outbreak of ganskweek poisoning in a herd of 93 cattle on a farm in the Graaff-Reinet district of the Cape Province is described. Five animals died and at least 16 others were affected. Clinical signs included nervous symptoms (intractability, wildness, aggressiveness), icterus, melaena, abdominal pain and photosensitisation. The most prominent lesions present in the one animal autopsied were a severe hepatopathy and haemorrhagic tendencies.

Heavy metal contamination in agricultural ecosystems poses significant risks to human health. Metals accumulating in soil-crop systems can be absorbed and concentrated by crops. Chronic exposure through the consumption of contaminated crops may lead to severe health consequences. In order to identify and evaluate health related constraints faced by Ugandan pig farmers, a veterinary herd health management approach (VHHM) was applied in 20 randomly selected pig farms in the Lira district, Uganda. The efficacy of four commercial porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines against respiratory disease was evaluated and compared in pig farms suffering from co-infection with PRRSV-1 and PRRSV-2. Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonosis found in over 150 mammalian species. Subclinically infected rodents and farm animals serve as reservoir hosts. Cats are exposed to leptospires regularly, particularly through hunting infected rodents. However, clinical leptospirosis is rare in cats. Nevertheless, infected cats can shed the pathogen through urine and thus, cats could play an important role in the epidemiology of leptospires.

A case of human brucellosis was diagnosed in France in January 2012. The investigation demonstrated that the case had been contaminated by raw milk cheese from a neighbouring dairy farm. As France has been officially free of bovine brucellosis since 2005, veterinary investigations are being conducted to determine the origin of the infection and avoid its spread among other herds. Hypotheses about the source of this infection are discussed.

Fifty to 100 per cent of about 8000 penned pheasants raised on a farm in Hiroshima Prefecture died annually for three years. Deaths were ascribed to type C botulism. Vaccination of four groups of pheasants with partially purified C1 toxoid effectively protected them against type C botulism. The protective efficacy of the toxoid was emphasised by the relatively high susceptibility of the pheasant to C1 toxin.

In an investigation of the relationship between storage mites and symptoms of allergic respiratory disease in farmers exposed to hay and grain dust, the clinical responses suggested an immediate type-I hypersensitivity. This study confirmed that farmers are exposed to large numbers of mites, particularly while feeding cattle. Storage mites may be an important cause of asthma in the farming community and should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of farmers lung.

Five patients with fascioliasis presented with malaise, pruritus, and pain in the right hypochondrium. Eosinophilia, increase in serum gamma globulin, and pyrexia were other features. Four patients treated with oral bithionol recovered completely and it is suggested that this is an effective form of therapy. The double diffusion precipitin test, being speedy and simple, was used as a screening procedure for diagnosis. The source of infection was wild watercress growing in a farm ditch.
