Donovanosis (granuloma inguinale) with vulval pseudo-elephantiasis.

A 24 year old Melanesian female from the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea presented with chronic painless ulcers of the external genitalia, anus and thighs of many years' duration and marked left labial hypertrophy for one year. Scrapings from the ulcers contained large foamy mononuclear cells in which Donovan bodies were demonstrated. The ulcers responded to tetracycline therapy however she absconded after three weeks before surgical correction of the labial pseudo-elephantiasis could be carried out. Vulval pseudo elephantiasis of the magnitude present in this case is rarely seen in Papu

The resistance to antimicrobial agents of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the bovine udder.

Isolates of Staphylococcus aureus (total 1657) from bovine mastitis were collected from 13 laboratories throughout Australia from 1974 to 1979. They were tested for resistance to antimicrobial agents using an agar dilution method. Resistance shown was mainly to penicillin and streptomycin. Occasional strains were resistant to neomycin, lincomycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and furazolidone but multiple resistance was rare. No strain showed resistance to methicillin. Resistance to penicillin declined from 35% in 1974-75 to 7.1% in 1979. Most strains (1395) were retested to all

[Effect of protein synthesis inhibitors on the vicasol-induced change in the content of the thermostable antifactor Xa in the blood serum].

Content of a thermostable inhibitor of thrombinogenesis (antifactor Xa) was decreased in blood serum after administration of pellentan. Subsequent treatment with vicasol normalized at the accelerated rate the antifactor Xa content in blood serum. Administration of the inhibitors of protein synthesis (vincrystine, actinomycin D, toyomycin, tetracycline--inhibitors of RNA polymerase, elongation, posttranscriptional conversions of mRNA and of translation processes, respectively (did not alter distinctly the vicasol effect--decrease in antifactor Xa content of blood serum. Salmonella-associated conjunctivitis in a cat.

Salmonella typhimurium-associated conjunctivitis in an adult female cat was characterized by epiphora and blepharospasm. The cat also harbored intestinal S typhimurium, as did one other cat in the same shipment of 7 cats obtained from a commercial cat dealer. The 3 isolates were resistant to ampicillin, cephaloridine, cephalothin, streptomycin, triple sulfonamides, and tetracycline. All 3 isolates were capable of transferring a part of the antibiotic resistance pattern to an Escherichia coli K-12 recipient. Salmonella were not recovered from the conjunctiva or fecal flora of either cat after 1

Naturally-occurring fusidic acid resistance in staphylococci and its linkage to other resistances.

Although Staph. aureus resistant to fusidic acid can be selected in vitro and has been found in vivo following treatment, naturally occurring strains without previous exposure to the drug have not, so far, been reported. Four such strains were isolated in the area of the North West Surrey Group Laboratory between August and September 1965, and six at Hammersmith Hospital during the first four months of 1966. In two of these resistance to fusidic acid was very unstable and its loss was accompanied by loss of resistance to penicillin in the first and to tetracycline and kanamycin in the second,

Multisectoral Emergence of Multidrug-Resistant Campylobacter coli Sequence Type 10042 Lineage, Europe, 2018-2025.

Campylobacter spp. remain the leading bacterial cause of foodborne gastroenteritis in Western countries. We report sustained, previously unrecognized circulation of a multidrug-resistant Campylobacter coli sequence type 10042 lineage across Europe during 2018-2025. Whole-genome sequencing of 217 isolates from 9 countries spanning human, animal, food, and environmental sources identified cross-border clusters, including a large lineage linking primarily Portugal and Luxembourg, as well as Germany, Ireland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Genomic data indicates ongoing clonal expansion with incre

Comparison of gut viromes across captive mammals reveals extensive genetic diversity in bacteriophage dark matter and mammalian viruses.

Comprehensive characterization of mammalian gut viromes is essential for early detection of commensal and potentially zoonotic viruses and for reducing the risk of cross-species transmission. Viral metagenomics was applied to profile gut viral communities from zoo mammals maintained across multiple zoological institutions in China. Viral communities differed markedly among host dietary guilds, with herbivores exhibiting the highest viral species diversity. In total, 1 027 viral sequences representing five major viral groups were recovered, including multiple mammal-associated astroviruses, pic

Aggregicyclins Shed Light on Type II Polyketide Biosynthesis in Myxococcota.

Polycyclic bacterial specialized metabolites such as anthraquinones, angucyclines, and tetracyclines are predominantly produced by type II polyketide synthase (PKS) systems and represent an important source of antibiotics and anticancer agents. While type II PKS pathways are well characterized in Gram-positive bacteria, their biosynthetic potential in Gram-negative bacteria remains largely unexplored. Here, we report the discovery and activation of a cryptic type II PKS biosynthetic gene cluster from the myxobacterium Aggregicoccus edonensis MCy10622. Using a rapid PCR-based cloning and promot

A spotlight on multidrug-resistant Salmonella in global poultry production.

Salmonellosis is among the most common foodborne infections worldwide, posing a significant economic and health burden. Poultry meat is a primary risk factor for human salmonellosis. The mass production and distribution of poultry meat have contributed to the spread of pathogenic Salmonella. Combined with antimicrobial resistance and the rise of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella infections due to animal housing conditions and the excessive and incorrect use of antimicrobial drugs in humans and animals, these factors create new challenges for food safety control. Salmonella shows resistance

A review on molecularly imprinted magnetic solid phase extraction emphasizing the analysis of antibiotics in complex matrices:Design, preparation, and application.

Magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) has been widely employed in the isolation and enrichment of antibiotics in complex matrices because it presents various unique advantages over traditional SPE including simple operation, fast extraction procedure, low cost and eco-friendliness. In recently years, magnetic molecularly imprinted nanoparticles (MMINs) containing highly specific recognition performance have been widely used to specific extraction of antibiotics under the format of MSPE. In this connection, recent advances of MMINs in the analysis of antibiotic residues are reviewed. Firstly,

Antibiotic resistance genes in Escherichia coli - literature review.

Antimicrobial resistance threatens humans and animals worldwide and is recognized as one of the leading global public health issues. Escherichia coli (E. coli) has an unquestionable role in carrying and transmitting antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which in many cases are encoded on plasmids or phage, thus creating the potential for horizontal gene transfer. In this literature review, the authors summarize the major antibiotic resistance genes occurring in E. coli bacteria, through the major antibiotic classes. The aim was not only listing the resistance genes against the clinically relevan

Bacteriophages as Vehicles for Antibiotic Resistance Genes in the Onyar River, Spain.

This study aimed to investigate the presence and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in bacterial and phage DNA fractions from sediment samples collected from the Onyar River, both before and after its passage through the urban area of Girona (northeast Spain). Genes conferring resistance to β-lactams, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines were quantified using quantitative PCR. Our findings showed that ARGs are present in both bacterial and phage DNA fractions, with a higher abundance in the bacterial fraction. Notably, our analysis revealed an increased ab

Antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli isolated from fish and aquaculture water: an emerging concern for consumers.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) constitutes a significant global health threat, exacerbated using antimicrobials in aquaculture, which accelerates the spread of resistant bacteria. In fish and aquaculture water, Escherichia coli acts as a key reservoir and vector for AMR, facilitating the dissemination of strains resistant to critically important antibiotics such as carbapenems and colistin, often through the production of enzymes such as extended-spectrum ß-lactamases. This review aimed to synthesize recent findings on AMR patterns and associated genes in E. coli from fish and aquaculture wate

Degradation of veterinary antibiotics with biochar addition in the simulated liquid fertilization process.

Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) have been recognized as an emerging contaminant when they are released into the environment. The study evaluated VAs degradation using biochar with various particle sizes and dosage amounts in deionized water and simulated liquid fertilization process. Results showed that smaller particle sizes (<150 μm) and higher dosages (up to 1.0 %) of biochar enhanced the degradation efficiency (17.5-95.8 %), but excessive doses caused particle aggregation to reduce the sorption of VAs. Macrolides (MLs), which possess a non-planar lactone structure, exhibit relatively weak sur

Network analysis of antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus aureus: characterization of hub genes and their functional implications.

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogenic bacterium that is increasingly resistant to antibiotics. To identify genes that facilitate this resistance, we analyzed 1062 genomes from the NCBI Genome database. From these genomes, we compile a list of 229 antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes from the CARD, ResFinder, MEGARes, and AR-ANNOT databases. We then constructed and analyzed their interaction network using multiple network analysis tools to identify critical central genes, designated as hub genes. Our findings revealed that mecA, fosB, arlR, mepA, mgrA, and arlS held the highest significance in
