Associations of Brain Structure and Neuropsychological Function With Artificial Intelligence Estimates of Biological Vascular Age.

BACKGROUND: Accelerated vascular aging, assessed as artificial intelligence-based vascular age (AIVA), is associated with small vessel disease that may impact brain structure and neuropsychological function. METHODS: In a cross-section of Framingham Heart Study participants, AIVA was estimated using a validated convolutional neural network trained to predict carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity from a normalized pressure waveform. Brain structure was assessed using magnetic resonance imaging with diffusion tensor imaging, and neuropsychological function was assessed using a standardized test b

Advancing Tau PET Quantification in Alzheimer Disease with Machine Learning: Introducing THETA, a Novel Tau Summary Measure.

Alzheimer disease (AD) exhibits spatially heterogeneous 3- or 4-repeat tau deposition across participants. Our overall goal was to develop an automated method to quantify the heterogeneous burden of tau deposition into a single number that would be clinically useful. Methods: We used tau PET scans from 3 independent cohorts: the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging and Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (Mayo, n = 1,290), the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI, n = 831), and the Open Access Series of Imaging Studies (OASIS-3, n = 430). A machine learning binary classification model was t

Planning on Autopilot? Associative Contributions to Proactive Control.

Proactive cognitive control is thought to rely on the active maintenance of goals or contextual information in working memory. It is often measured using the AX-CPT, in which antecedent cues (A/B) are used to proactively prepare a response to a subsequently-presented probe (X/Y). Although control in this task purportedly requires active maintenance of information in working memory, it also provides conditions in which learning the contingencies between relevant events could influence performance via associative learning. We tested this hypothesis using a dot-pattern expectancy version of the A

Stigma and social symptoms in Parkinson's disease: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasing more rapidly than any other neurodegenerative disorder. Motor and non-motor symptoms, and deficits in cognition and communication, negatively impact people with PD's social functioning and can result in enacted and felt stigma. The aim of this scoping review is to explore the determinants and effects of stigma in PD. METHODS: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. Quantitative and qualitative studies from January 2000 to April 2026 focusing on stigma in PD were considered for

Reasoning in machine vision by learning fast and slow thinking.

Reasoning is a hallmark of human intelligence, enabling adaptive decision-making in complex unfamiliar scenarios. In contrast, machine intelligence remains bound to training data, unable to dynamically refine solutions at inference. While recent advances have explored machine reasoning - trading inference-time compute for improved performance - they focus on verbal domains such as mathematical problem-solving where explicit rules govern step-by-step solution generation. Many tasks lack sufficient labelled data and require alternative performance improvement mechanisms, such as inference-time c

How Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice Compares to Traditional Simulation: A Qualitative Investigation of Pediatric Resident Perceptions.

OBJECTIVES: Rapid cycle deliberate practice (RCDP) is a type of within-simulation debriefing that alternates between specific practice and targeted feedback. While RCDP has become increasingly used in conjunction with traditional debriefing, little is known about specific contexts in which RCDP might be most useful. Therefore, our objective was to explore learners' perceptions of RCDP versus traditional simulation, with focus on differences in learning and psychological safety. METHODS: Pediatric residents at a large pediatric residency program attended simulation trainings with both RCDP and

Farm-based therapeutic horticulture for people living with dementia: the Vicenza Farm Project.

Dementia is a major global health challenge, with wide-ranging psychosocial and relational impacts that call for supportive, everyday interventions alongside clinical care. While advances in Alzheimer's disease are promising, dementia includes multiple conditions, including young-onset forms, and existing pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions still offer valuable but incomplete support, often leaving everyday psychosocial needs unmet for most people living with dementia. This Perspective describes the Vicenza Farm Project, a farm-based therapeutic horticulture program developed

Self-supervised small vessel segmentation with shape-aware geometric models and attention.

Small vessels play a critical role in the development of various brain diseases. Significant advances have been made in high-resolution vascular imaging, but it remains a challenge to precisely segment small vessels to quantitatively assess their integrity. Existing vessel segmentation approaches typically assume, implicitly or explicitly, a tubular representation suitable for large vessels but suboptimal for small vessels because they often exhibit shape irregularity, weak contrast, and discontinuity even in high-resolution imaging data. To address these challenges, we propose a generalized a

A Single-Armed Pilot Study to Evaluate a Psychosocial Intervention for Young People Who Have Experienced a Burn Injury: The Wellbeing Study.

Children with serious burns often suffer psychosocial consequences. This study evaluated the pilot of a 6-session psychoeducational intervention newly designed to support the wellbeing of children who experienced burns. Each 1-h session was delivered online to individuals at times deemed convenient to participants, by trained facilitators (mental health researchers and other allied health professionals). The pilot was single-arm, with psychosocial screening administered at baseline, immediately postintervention, and at 6- and 12-month follow-ups. Eligible participants were 6-17 years, 6-week t

Resting-State Brain Age Predicts Cognitive and Sensorimotor Deficits in Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders: A Validation & Longitudinal Study.

Brain-age models use neuroimaging features to predict chronological age and thereby estimate normative lifespan patterns; the resulting brain-age gap (BAG) quantifies deviation from age-expected brain characteristics. Structural brain-age acceleration is well established in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), but the utility of resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC)-based brain age remains unclear. Here, we trained rs-FC brain-age models on aggregated lifespan data from healthy controls (N≈2,200) and evaluated them in four independent SSD case-control cohorts. Across cohorts and atl

Organizing adult attachment in alternative ways: A qualitative assessment of schemas antithetical to the secure base script.

How adults make meaning of their childhood experiences with caregivers plays a central role in how they anticipate support, manage distress, and interpret relationships. To understand how adults conceptualize these attachment relationships, the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) probes for childhood memories of general relationships, day-to-day interactions, and instances of loss, threat, and separation. Across these narratives, the AAI captures expectations of whether caregivers are perceived as an available source of support in times of distress, and whether they serve as a secure base from wh

From Inference to Ritual: Why Frequentist Statistics Became Hard to Understand and Teach in Medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Frequentist statistical tools still structure a large part of biomedical research, regulatory evaluation, and medical teaching, even though their correct interpretation remains uncertain among students, clinicians, and readers of the literature. This misunderstanding is usually attributed to pedagogical shortcomings or individual cognitive errors. This article examines the structural reasons for this persistent misunderstanding. It argues that it arises from a combination of historical, methodological, semantic, and institutional factors rather than from a direct lack of technica

Cognitive muscular therapy™ for knee osteoarthritis: A feasibility randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: People with knee osteoarthritis exhibit overactivity of the knee muscles during functional tasks. This will increase mechanical loads and may exacerbate pain. Cognitive Muscular Therapy™ (CMT) is a new conservative intervention that aims to reduce muscle overactivity and change habitual responses to pain. This study was designed to assess the feasibility of a future randomised controlled trial, designed to compare CMT with usual care. METHODS: Patients with knee osteoarthritis, who had failed to benefit from previous therapeutic exercise, were randomised to receive CMT or usual car

Deep learning models accurately classify Parkinson's disease from eye-tracking fixation data.

Eye-tracking is an accessible, non-invasive technology that provides information on motor and cognitive function and is therefore relevant for studying neurodegenerative diseases. Saccade experiments, in particular, have proven useful in the study of Parkinson's disease progression. However, to date, no single eye-movement biomarker has been shown to reliably differentiate patients from healthy controls. In the present work, we investigate state-of-the-art deep learning methods for Parkinson's disease classification using eye-tracking time-series data from saccade experiments. We analyzed eye-

"Nothing about us without us": Co-production of and 'How To' implement a biopsychosocial supported self-management intervention for TMD.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) affect up to 1 in 15 people, significantly impairing daily function and quality of life. Despite clinical guidance recommending a biopsychosocial approach, treatment remains largely biomedical, often relying on occlusal splints or invasive procedures with limited evidence. This study describes a patient-centred, supported, self-management intervention for TMDs co-developed with patients, and its implementation into clinical practice. METHODS: The intervention was co-developed with patients through syntheses of systematic reviews, qualitative rese
