Evaluation of a prescription based record-linkage model for epidemiological studies of long-term adverse effects of drugs--with special regard to combined oral contraceptives.

The Department of Drugs of the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare undertook a study of the possibilities of a new scheme for post-marketing surveillance by means of prescription and register based epidemiological studies, primarily of combined oral contraceptives (COC). Based on available data on COC usage patterns and incidence rates of the disease at study, it was estimated that study periods, including the necessary time periods for disease development and generation of a sufficient number of cases, would amount to at least 1 to 13 years for cardiovascular outcomes and 8 to 17 yea

[An epidemiological survey follow-up study on infant breast-feeding. III. Multiple stepwise regression analysis to factors affecting human milk amount].

This paper reports the result of multiple regression analysis to factors affecting human milk amount. By using survey follow-up study method, the data were obtained from 461 mothers who breast-fed their infants within six months after delivery. According to the results of stepwise regression, factors including the number of breast-feeding per day after one month post-partum, the number of breast-feeding per day within one month post-partum, breast-feeding infant regularly, menstruation recovery late are related to the amount of breast milk positively (increasing human milk amount), and factors

Epidemiological features of HTLV-I carriers and incidence of ATL in an ATL-endemic island: a report of the community-based co-operative study in Tsushima, Japan.

To extend the epidemiological study on adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) in Japan, the geographical and demographic characteristics of carriers of human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) and patients with ATL were analyzed in Tsushima Island, which is one of the typical endemic areas of ATL in Kyushu, Japan. Even on the small island of Tsushima (710 km2; pop. 48,875; 123 villages), the positive rates of anti-HTLV-I antibody among the 58 villages studied varied from 2% to 50%, a fact that is probably associated with the historical events affecting the movement of the indigenous population

Increased prevalence of infectious diseases and other adverse outcomes in human T lymphotropic virus types I- and II-infected blood donors. Retrovirus Epidemiology Donor Study (REDS) Study Group.

Disease associations of human T lymphotropic virus types I and II (HTLV-I and -II) infection were studied in 154 HTLV-I-infected, 387 HTLV-II-infected, and 799 uninfected blood donors. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 99% confidence intervals (CIs) were derived from logistic regression models controlling for demographics and relevant confounders. All subjects were human immunodeficiency virus type 1-seronegative. HTLV-II was significantly associated with a history of pneumonia (OR, 2.6; 99% CI, 1.2-5.3), minor fungal infection (OR, 2.9; 99% CI, 1.2-7.1), and bladder or kidney infection (OR, 1.6;

Association between the number of pregnancies and chronic kidney disease in Korean women: a population-based cross-sectional study from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study-Health Examinee (KoGES-HEXA) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing public health burden. Repeated pregnancies exert anatomical and physiological stress on the kidneys; however, the association between number of pregnancies and CKD is unclear. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study-Health Examinee (KoGES-HEXA; 2004-2013). The number of pregnancies was categorized as 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or ≥5. The primary outcome was CKD, defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, using the CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration)

Epidemiological trends of HIV among individuals aged 15-54 years in South Africa from 2004 to 2025: a population-based, longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: South Africa has mounted the largest HIV prevention and treatment programme in history, delivering substantial gains in survival and prevention of new HIV infections; however, service disruptions and recent funding losses might jeopardise these successes. There is a scarcity of high-quality, population-based empirical evidence on key epidemic metrics needed to accurately gauge recent progress towards epidemic control in South Africa. We aimed to evaluate recent progress towards HIV epidemic control in South Africa by quantifying long-term trends in key epidemic control metrics in a

Relationships between area deprivation and stillbirth, neonatal mortality, infant mortality, and child mortality rates in Japan from 2015 to 2022: A descriptive epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the associations between area deprivation and child mortality in Japan after 2014 is limited. This study aimed to clarify the trends in stillbirth and neonatal, infant, and child mortality rates by municipal-level area deprivation index (ADI) after 2014. METHODS: We calculated the ADI for different municipalities using 2015 and 2020 Japanese census data, and applied the ADI to the analysis periods of 2015-2019 and 2020-2022. We then stratified the municipalities into quintiles by ADI, and calculated the stillbirth and neonatal, infant, and child mortality rates for eac

Temporal trends in Group A Streptococcus epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility and emm-type distribution: a seven-year surveillance study from a UK district general hospital.

BACKGROUND: Group A Streptococcus (GAS) remains universally susceptible to penicillin; however, resistance to macrolides and clindamycin varies geographically and may affect management, particularly in patients with penicillin allergy. Recent increases in GAS incidence reported in the United Kingdom highlight the need for continued local epidemiological and antimicrobial resistance surveillance. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective laboratory-based surveillance study at a UK district general hospital between January 2017 and December 2023. All laboratory-confirmed GAS isolates were included.

Comparison of treatment effects between ACR response criteria and target-based outcomes for contemporary rheumatoid arthritis drug approval trials: A meta-epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVE: Regulatory priorities diverge between agencies - the FDA maintained ACR20 response as primary endpoint in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) trials, whereas the EMA emphasized target-based outcomes. We aim to systematically compare treatment effect estimates between American College of Rheumatology (ACR) response criteria (ACR20/50/70) and target-based outcomes in placebo-controlled trials of approved RA therapies. METHODS: A meta-epidemiological study was performed on randomized placebo-controlled trials investigating approved biological and targeted DMARDs (bioDMARDs and tsDMARDs) in pati
