["Renal dwarfism". Its impact on dental development and on maxillary growth].

Children with terminal renal failure require iterative dialysis while awaiting kidney graft, and these have to be repeated over a period of years until a suitable graft presenting histocompatibility with the receiver is found. This has a considerable growth retardation effect (-3 to -6 SD, according to the age at onset of terminal failure). Two features appear to be paradoxical in these children. 1) In spite of a high carbohydrate diet and generally poor oral hygiene, they present a low prevalence of caries, probably related to modified salivary components. The only objective finding is an inc…

Toward the formulation of sociodental indicators.

The bases for the construction of sociodental indicators is discussed in the paper, considering several available indexes of oral health status (dental caries, periodontal disease, malocclusion, oral hygiene, and other oral conditions) as well as measures of quality of services. Very little research exists relating any of the above measures to social indicators such as personal life-style or cultural and ecological factors. Such expansion would enable dental indicators to be useful for purposes of policy decisions. Combining any dental indicators or set of indicators with a potential global so…

[The changing clinical pattern of rheumatic fever (author's transl)].

During the last years a remarkable change in the pattern of rheumatic fever has been observed. Severe carditis and polyarthritis have almost disappeared. Accordingly the mortality rate decreased considerably milder forms of rheumatic fever may become a diagnostical problem so that adequate therapy may be delayed. These cases may present as chronic heart disease with an unspecific history. The modified Jones criteria alone have limited value. Laboratory tests are increasingly important. Not only improvement of hygiene or therapy with Penicillin are causes for the declining incidence of rheumati…

Effectiveness of oral mucositis management based on MASCC/ISOO guidelines in pediatric oncology patients: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Although survival rates in childhood cancer have improved with more effective, risk-adapted multimodal treatments, oral mucositis remains one of the most common treatment-related oral complications. This study evaluated the impact of an oral mucositis care protocol on the severity of mucositis. METHODS: This prospective randomized controlled study was conducted with 30 pediatric oncology patients aged 6 to 18 years. The sample included children with hematologic malignancies (predominantly acute lymphoblastic leukemia) and solid tumors. The data were collected using a descriptive info

Oral health in professional Slovak soccer players: Assessment of dental risks, subgingival microbiota and genetic influences.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies reveal high rates of dental issues among professional soccer players, worsened by poor hygiene, frequent sport drinks consumption and limited preventive care. Busy schedules, frequent relocations and changing clubs further disrupt dental routines, impacting performance and well-being. Therefore, we decided to assess the oral health status of professional Slovak soccer players and address these critical concerns. METHODS: We assessed the oral health of 51 male soccer players from two elite Slovak soccer clubs during 2023/2024 season. Data collection included two pape…

Effectiveness of oral care for the prevention of non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAPPEN): a multicentre, stepped-wedge, cluster-randomised trial in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) is among the most prevalent health-care-associated infections, yet remains under-reported, understudied, and infrequently targeted by infection prevention strategies. Oral care is considered a key preventive measure; however, there are few high-quality randomised controlled trials conducted in hospital settings. The aim of this study is to evaluate whether an enhanced oral care intervention reduces the incidence of NV-HAP. METHODS: The Hospital Acquired Pneumonia Prevention (HAPPEN) trial was an open-cohort, stepped-wedge, cluste

Barriers to dental treatment for patients on the autism spectrum disorder.

Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) encounter significant obstacles when attempting to access dental care services. These obstacles are a result of their unique health requirements, behavioral challenges, and communication impairments. The primary challenges encompass a reliance on caregivers, challenges with adhering to proper oral hygiene practices, selective eating habits that contribute to dental caries, and an impaired capacity to communicate pain and health requirements. Furthermore, dental clinics frequently lack the capacity to accommodate individuals with ASD, ex…

Socio-ecological barriers to women's empowerment in sanitation in Eastern Indonesia.

Low-income and marginalised groups in any setting are affected by inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sanitation access, particularly women and girls who are disproportionately affected mainly because of gender inequality. In-depth interviews and focus group discussions were conducted on 28 informants and 6 groups, respectively, and analysed using thematic analysis. The study found that women and girls in Easter…

Effect of Oral Care on Endothelial Dysfunction in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Periodontitis is a common chronic infection and is associated with cardiovascular disease. This study evaluated whether basic oral care for periodontal disease could improve endothelial function in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS).This study enrolled 54 patients with acute coronary syndrome admitted to Kagoshima City Hospital and who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention. Flow-mediated endothelium-dependent dilatation (FMD) was measured before discharge (initial FMD) and at 8 months after percutaneous coronary intervention (follow-up FMD). Influence of dental status on outcome after lung transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Poor oral hygiene can cause infections and inflammatory diseases. Data on its impact on outcome after lung transplantation (LuTX) is scarce. METHODS: Two hundred patients having undergone LuTX from 2014 to 2019 were selected. Collected data comprised LuTX-indication, periodontal status, and number of carious teeth/fillings.
