A Case of Misdiagnosed Pediatric Congenital Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus due to AQP2 Variants.

BACKGROUND: Congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (CNDI) is a rare disorder of renal water handling, often presenting in early infancy with severe polyuria and hypernatremia. Differentiating CNDI from central diabetes insipidus (CDI) remains challenging, and delayed identification may result in inappropriate therapy, leading to adverse growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of an 8-month-old male infant with a history of suspected CDI since birth. He was treated with desmopressin (dDAVP) without clinical benefit. The absence of the posterior pituita

Understanding parenting stress in autism spectrum disorder: a cross-sectional study exploring differences between mothers and fathers.

BACKGROUND: Parents of autistic children may experience high levels of stress. Prior research implicates child cognitive impairment, emotional and behavioral problems, sociodemographic factors, and autism symptoms as contributors; however, gender differences in parenting stress remain underexplored. This study compared parenting stress between mothers and fathers of autistic children and examined key predictors across stress domains. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a database including data from 160 mother-father pairs of children aged 3-15 years who had received an ASD diagnosis. Parent

From altar to autopsy table: ecological imaginaries, medical violence and parareligious affect in William Carlos Williams's 'The Use of Force' and Tess Gerritsen's The Surgeon.

This article compares William Carlos Williams's short story 'The Use of Force' (1938) and Tess Gerritsen's novel The Surgeon (2001) to explore how biomedical care can slide into coercion and how clinical spaces oscillate between sanctuary and sacrilege. Building on Michel Foucault's formulation of clinical vision, together with Julia Kristeva's account of abjection and René Girard's sacrificial theory, I propose a three-strand analytic-power/knowledge, Gothic embodiment and parareligious affect-supplemented by an ecoGothic perspective that scales clinical violence from flesh to environment. Validation of self-reported family history of myocardial infarction using nationwide health care data.

UNLABELLED: Self-reported family history of myocardial infarction (MI) is frequently used to assess cardiovascular risk. However, validation of self-reported family history has often been limited to small samples, and to death-certificates or self-reported medical history as reference. This study investigated the accuracy of self-reported family history of MI in a population-based cohort, using register data as reference. We included 25,302 participants from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) with sufficient register coverage. Self-reported family history of MI in parents and

Exercise and dietary interventions in the regulation of hepatic mitophagy and liver recovery (Review).

The high metabolic demand of the liver renders it dependent on mitophagy for mitochondrial quality control. While exercise and nutritional interventions are known to influence hepatic mitophagy, the precise regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Mitophagy in the liver is influenced by a combination of exercise-related parameters, dietary factors and sex-specific biological factors. Drawing from 19 animal studies published between 2016 and 2026, the present narrative review examines how different exercise modalities and dietary interventions regulate hepatic mitophagy. Among mode

The retroelement-derived human protein PEG10 is a regulator of mRNA splicing in neurons.

Retroelements, including retrotransposons, endogenous retroviruses, and their fragments, as well as rare co-opted or domesticated retroelements, can contribute to neurodegenerative disorders and aging through modulation of gene expression and induction of neuroinflammation. Paternally Expressed Gene 10 (PEG10) is a retroelement-derived human gene that has recently been identified as a putative driver of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Angelman's Syndrome. PEG10 has been reported to bind nucleic acid and undergoes a complex self-processing pathway that results in gene expression changes

Resveratrol isomers with opposing activities target endonuclease G to modulate neurodegeneration and mitochondrial elimination.

Mitochondrial endonuclease G (EndoG) is involved in several important cellular processes and has been implicated in multiple diseases. Accordingly, molecules modulating EndoG activity may have high therapeutic potentials. Searching for compounds affecting paternal mitochondrial elimination (PME) in Caenorhabditis elegans, we have identified resveratrol (RSV), a well-known natural compound, as a PME inhibitor. Interestingly, RSV exists as a mixture of trans- and cis-isomers, which interconvert upon light exposure and, surprisingly, exhibit opposing effects on PME by targeting nematode EndoG. Bi

Obesity and infertility: clinical associations and implications in wom-en from Goiânia - Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a major metabolic condition linked to reduced fertility. Excess adipose tissue disrupts the neuroendocrine axis and impairs several reproduc-tive processes. Evidence shows that, even when assisted reproductive technologies are used, women with obesity experience lower oocyte recovery, fewer viable embryos, and higher rates of miscarriage and gestational complica-tions. This study evaluated the relationship between obe-sity and female infertility by analyzing in vitro fertilization outcomes. METHODS: This quantitative, cross-sectional, retro-spective study included all in

State of the Art of Artificial Intelligence in Plastic Surgery.

Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) raises a fundamental question for modern plastic surgery: will it enable personalized, patient-centered, efficient care, or lead to a dystopian, automated care that diminishes human autonomy, which is dominated by generic "AI slop" that eventually deteriorates the doctor-patient relationship? Methods: This study examines current applications of large language models, generative AI, and neural networks in plastic surgery, assessing AI's roles in surgical planning, automation of repetitive tasks, outcome evaluation, education, and patient communication,

Patient autonomy despite false beliefs? On the epistemic prerequisites for autonomous treatment decisions.

Within debates on the epistemic preconditions of patient autonomy, scholarly attention has focused predominantly on the scope and weight of cognitive competencies, while the role of doxastic attitudes towards medical information have remained comparatively underexplored. Clarifying this issue is, however, of considerable importance when dealing with patients who, though competent and properly informed by the healthcare professionals, withhold belief in the medical facts presented to them. Are such self-imposed false believes compatible with autonomous decision-making and therefore demand respe

Parent-Child Relationships and Locus of Control in Two-Child Families.

BACKGROUND: In a rapidly changing society, locus of control becomes an important psychological indicator reflecting an individual's readiness to actively manage their own life. Research shows that an internal locus of control is associated with higher levels of psychological well-being, academic achievement, and social responsibility. The relevance of studying the factors that influence the development of locus of control in childhood and adolescence is determined by its high plasticity during this period and the possibility of targeted influence through the family environment. OBJECTIVE: The

The causal effect of family history of cardiovascular disease on erectile dysfunction: a randomized clinical study and Mendelian randomization study.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is increasingly recognized as an early clinical marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, the causal role of familial predisposition to CVD in ED development remains insufficiently defined. This study investigated whether genetic susceptibility associated with a parental history of CVD exerts a causal influence on ED risk, integrating clinical data with Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. A cohort of 288 men who attended the Department of Andrology of Xiangya Hospital (Changsha, China) between June 2017 and June 2023 were recruited, comprising 223 patients w

Two Distinct Clinical Presentations of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD): Diagnostic Utility of Whole-Exome Sequencing in a Genetically Heterogeneous Disorder.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare, genetically heterogeneous disorder with variable clinical presentation. In cases where traditional diagnostic tools such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) or nasal nitric oxide (nNO) measurement are inconclusive/unavailable, molecular diagnostics via whole-exome sequencing (WES) may provide essential insights. In this case report, we present two male infants with diverse phenotypes and genotypes. 1st patient was ultimately diagnosed with PCD thanks to WES, while 2nd patient was strongly suggestive of PCD. The 1st patient portrayed in his clin

Seminal plasma exposure modulates peripheral T cell-associated transcription during early pregnancy in the mare.

Successful establishment of pregnancy requires maternal immune tolerance to paternal antigens introduced by insemination. Regulatory T cell (Treg)-associated responses are thought to play a central role in this process, whereas pro-inflammatory T helper 1 (Th1) responses may disrupt pregnancy success. In other species, seminal plasma (SP) has been shown to modulate maternal immune adaptation; however, this relationship remains poorly defined in mares, where SP is frequently reduced during routine breeding practices. The objectives of this study were to (1) characterize temporal changes in syst
