Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) continues to gain momentum in minimally invasive surgery. Not only is TORS potentially curative in many cases, but it also addresses the growing emphasis on functional outcomes and quality of life. The main anatomical areas in which TORS is used are the oropharynx and larynx; however, it is becoming increasingly common in thyroid surgery and neck dissections. With growing popularity, the number of indications for TORS in oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancer also increases. However, not all patients are good candidates for this technique, and thus patient selectio

The patient was an 82-year-old woman with localized muscle-invasive bladder cancer, who underwent robot-assisted radical cystectomy and cutaneous ureterostomy. On the 3rd day after the operation, she suddenly complained of abdominal pain. Abdominal computed tomographic scans revealed parastomal hernia. The patient underwent manual reduction of hernia, but had repeated recurrences of parastomal hernia within a few days. On the 14th day we performed a laparoscopic hernia repair. Observation of the stoma site revealed a laceration of the peritoneum and fascia, and the small intestine was prolapse

Prosthetic foot selection for individuals with lower limb amputation relies primarily on clinician judgment. The prosthesis user rarely has an opportunity to provide experiential input into the decision by trying different feet. A prosthetic foot emulator (PFE) is a robotic prosthetic foot that could facilitate prosthesis users' ability to trial feet with different mechanical characteristics. Here, we introduce a procedure by which a robotic PFE is configured to emulate the sagittal plane effective ankle stiffness of a range of commercial prosthetic forefeet. Mechanical testing was used to col

A proof of concept of a novel air microfluidics-enabled soft robotic sleeve to enable lymphedema treatment is presented. Compression sleeves represent the current, suboptimal standard of care, and stationary pumps assist with lymph drainage; however, effective systems that are truly wearable while performing daily activities are very scarce. This problematic trade-off between performance and wearability requires a new solution, which is addressed by an innovative microfluidic device. Its novelty lies in the use of light, small, and inexpensive air microfluidic chips (35 × 20 × 5 mm3 in size) t

We report a case of robot-assisted total hysterectomy in a patient with extremely rare pelvic anatomy. Robot-assisted total laparoscopic hysterectomy was performed for lobular endocervical glandular hyperplasia on the left side of the uterus. The sigmoid colon was present between the two uterine corpora of a uterine didelphys and was attached to the bladder via the mesentery and fat. During surgery, the surgeon left the console and confirmed the magnetic resonance images. The surgery was then completed safely after the surgeon understood the anatomy. The postoperative condition was good, and t

The prosthetic paravalvular leak is a rare but important complication following mitral valve replacement. Determining the location of the leak is almost always dependent on perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography and the considerable expertise of echo operators. Acoustic shadowing due to the prosthetic valve may create another important difficulty. In this report, we present a case with a paravalvular leak diagnosed 1 year after mitral valve replacement. Beating heart surgery and robotic 3D/high-resolution camera provided to localize the direct location of leak coherent with perioperat

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive mitral valve repair (MVr) is commonly performed. Data on the outcomes of robotic MVr versus nonrobotic minimally invasive MVr are lacking. We sought to compare the short-term and mid-term outcomes of robotic and nonrobotic MVr.
METHODS: We reviewed all patients who underwent robotic MVr (n = 424) or nonrobotic MVr via right mini-thoracotomy (n = 86) at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, from January 2015 to February 2020. Data on baseline and operative characteristics, operative and long-term outcomes were analyzed. Patients were matched 1:1 using propensity scores.

INTRODUCTION: Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) accounts for 5-10% of all urothelial tumors (1). Radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) remains the standard treatment for high, and low-grade UTUC (2). Although the open approach has been considered the gold standard, robotic techniques have shown comparable oncological outcomes with potential advantages in terms of peri-operative morbidity (3).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present a novel "Keyhole" technique for management of distal ureter and bladder cuff during robotic RNU. This technique allows the surgeon to directly visualize the ureteric or

Non-urothelial malignant ureteral obstruction (MUO) causes hydronephrosis, renal damage and infectious sequelae. The overall condition, symptoms, and plans for systemic therapy inform urologic intervention. In well-selected cases, there is a role for definitive reconstruction. We describe a robotic-assisted distal ureterectomy and reimplant for definitive repair of obstructive metastatic melanoma.

Neuromuscular disorders, such as foot drop, severely affect the locomotor function and walking independence after a brain injury event. Mirror-based robotic therapy (MRT) has been a promising rehabilitation strategy favouring upper limb muscle strength and motor control in the last years. However, there are still no studies validating this technique in lower limb experimental protocols. This paper presents an innovative visual and motor feedback strategy based on serious games and MRT modalities. Thus, a preliminary system validation with a healthy participant is performed. Moreover, the strat

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to showcase a fully stapled approach to creating a gastrojejunostomy during a robot-assisted Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
METHODS: We utilize two robotic 12-mm ports, two robotic 8-mm ports, and one 8-mm assistant port. The tools used are a fenestrated bipolar forceps, vessel sealer, cadiere grasper, needle driver, and a robotic stapler. After the partial gastrectomy, the roux limb is brought up to the gastric pouch where monopolar scissors are used to create a gastrotomy and enterotomy. The gastrotomy is made just above the staple line of the gastric pouch.

Verticalization is a common therapeutic intervention during rehabilitation of patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC). The Erigo®Pro is a robotic tilt-table (RTT) with built-in stepping unit for the lower extremities to prevent orthostatic hypotension during verticalization. In addition, the system also provides functional electrical stimulation (FES) of muscles of the lower extremities. In this randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT), 47 patients with subacute DoC received a 4-week verticalization regime (16 verticalization sessions) and were allocated to one of three experimental g

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate an approach to skin management in cases of gender-affirming vaginoplasty in the setting of penoscrotal hypoplasia. Gender-affirming penile inversion vaginoplasty is a procedure that has traditionally relied upon the use of local genital tissues to both construct the vulva and line the neovaginal canal. Improved and earlier access to pubertal suppression has resulted in an increasing number of individuals presenting for vaginoplasty with penoscrotal hypoplasia and significantly less skin available to accomplish the goals of vaginoplasty.
