Clergy burnout: an integrative approach.

Understanding how clergy, who begin their careers with high idealism, optimism, and compassion, burn out is difficult. One body of research suggests that clergy, among others, burn out because of the systems in which they work. From this perspective, burnout is the result of external systemic factors such as bureaucracy, poor administrative support, and difficult work conditions. The other body of research suggests that burnout is the result of intrapersonal factors such as high idealism, Type-A personality, narcissism, and perfectionism. It is our position that these two bodies of research ar

Integrated CTC Enrichment and Dual-Responsive Nanoprobe Identification Enable Intelligent Liquid Biopsy-Based Cancer Diagnosis.

This work addresses the challenge of accurately identifying living circulating tumor cell (CTC) from contaminating leukocytes by developing a novel, fixation-free dual-marker sensing strategy that preserves cell viability and biomolecular integrity for downstream analysis. Our strategy utilizes telomerase-responsive gold nanoparticles (polyA-TSP-AuNPs) to increase intracellular negative charge, which in turn enhances the electrostatic accumulation of a custom-synthesized, mitochondria-targeting aggregation-induced emission probe (DSA-PPh3). This dual-marker identification system was then integ

Genotyping of chimerical BCR-ABL1 RNA in chronic myeloid leukemia by integrated DNA chip.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph(+)) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are associated with fusion of the BCR and ABL1 genes by chromosome translocation. The chimerical BCR-ABL1 gene encodes different fusion proteins that vary in size, depending on the breakpoint in the BCR region. Different types of fusion genes in CML and Ph(+) ALL are thought to be related to the clinical course and outcome of each patient. Currently, the genotypes are determined by PCR, followed by gel electrophoresis or DNA sequencing (among other methodologies). Our major aim wa

Genetic properties of chromosomally integrated 2 mu plasmid DNA in yeast.

We obtained strains of yeast with large segments of 2 mu plasmid DNA integrated at several chromosomal locations by selecting genetically for recombination between a chromosomal sequence carried on a 2 mu-circle-containing hybrid plasmid and a homologous sequence on the chromosome. In all diploids examined, the presence of 2 mu circle sequences causes a marked instability of the chromosome into which the 2 mu DNA is inserted. Although in some cases the loss of genetic markers is due to physical loss of the entire chromosome, in most cases the loss of markers appears to be due to a mitotic homo

"It's way more than just writing a prescription": A qualitative study of preferences for integrated versus non-integrated treatment models among individuals with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) is offered in integrated treatment models addressing both substance use and other health conditions within the same system. This often includes offering medications for OUD in general medical settings. It remains uncertain whether integrated OUD treatment models are preferred to non-integrated models, where treatment is provided within a distinct treatment system. This study aimed to explore preferences for integrated versus non-integrated treatment models among people with OUD and examine what factors may influence preferences.

Smart Wearable EEG Devices: A Review of Lightweight, Multi-Sensor Systems for Sleep and Everyday Neurophysiology.

Wearable electroencephalography (EEG) is rapidly evolving toward lightweight, user-friendly systems that enable brain monitoring in naturalistic settings. Traditional multi-channel, gel-based systems provide broad scalp coverage and high signal fidelity but are impractical for unsupervised or long-term use. This review focuses on the emerging generation of smart wearable EEG devices that are easy to wear, require minimal setup, and typically integrate additional physiological sensors such as photoplethysmography (PPG), temperature, or motion sensors. We review wearable EEG systems across four

Study on a high precision alignment system with dual cameras.

This study focuses on developing an automatic high-precision alignment system that integrates automated optical inspection with machine vision recognition to replace traditional manual alignment methods. The core aim is to implement an image-based positioning and control system for a precision alignment platform with dual cameras. Various image processing techniques, such as template matching, edge detection, mathematical morphology, and Hough transforms, are used to identify target features. The identified target coordinates are then fed back to the controller, which calculates the necessary

Cas9 protein delivery non-integrating lentiviral vectors for gene correction in sickle cell disease.

Gene editing with the CRISPR-Cas9 system could revolutionize hematopoietic stem cell (HSC)-targeted gene therapy for hereditary diseases, including sickle cell disease (SCD). Conventional delivery of editing tools by electroporation limits HSC fitness due to its toxicity; therefore, efficient and non-toxic delivery remains crucial. Integrating lentiviral vectors are established for therapeutic gene delivery to engraftable HSCs in gene therapy trials; however, their sustained expression and size limitation preclude their use for CRISPR-Cas9 delivery. Here, we developed a Cas9 protein delivery n

Distributed and Modular CAN-Based Architecture for Hardware Control and Sensor Data Integration.

In this article, we present a CAN-based (Controller Area Network) distributed system to integrate sensors, actuators and hardware controllers in a mobile robot platform. With this work, we provide a robust, simple, flexible and open system to make hardware elements or subsystems communicate, that can be applied to different robots or mobile platforms. Hardware modules can be connected to or disconnected from the CAN bus while the system is working. It has been tested in our mobile robot Rato, based on a RWI (Real World Interface) mobile platform, to replace the old sensor and motor controllers

Infrared macro-fingerprint analysis-through-separation for holographic chemical characterization of herbal medicine.

Although herbal medicine (HM) behaves as a complex system having high-potential for treating chronic/life-threatening diseases, compatible characterization metrics with hierarchical approaches to integrate molecular-level information into the whole system are lacking. Herein, we report a high-throughput methodology (holographic infrared (IR) spectroscopy) harmonizing with the character of HM, providing hierarchical infrared fingerprints (entirety, parts and single ingredients), and working as a "GPS" to navigate a comprehensive chemical characterization of HM circularly from system to molecula

On the Death of a Self-Integrating Organism: A Reply to "A Biophilosophical Approach to the Determination of Brain Death".

To advance the debate over the brain death (BD) criteria, Sulmasy and colleagues have recently proposed that the BD criteria can be saved if three things are done. First, they suggest that the philosophical rationale used to justify the BD criteria should be changed to acknowledge that the human body is self-integrated and not integrated by the brain. They then propose that this self-integration is lost when the total functioning of the brain, especially the functioning of the hypothalamus, is lost. Finally, they affirm that medical criteria for BD should be expanded to include a diagnosis of

The Complement System as a Therapeutic Target in Retinal Disease.

The complement cascade is a vital system in the human body's defense against pathogens. During the natural aging process, it has been observed that this system is imperative for ensuring the integrity and homeostasis of the retina. While this system is critical for proper host defense and retinal integrity, it has also been found that dysregulation of this system may lead to certain retinal pathologies, including geographic atrophy and diabetic retinopathy. Targeting components of the complement system for retinal diseases has been an area of interest, and in vivo, ex vivo, and clinical trials

A control strategy for cabin temperature of electric vehicle considering health ventilation for lowering virus infection.

A cooperative control strategy is proposed for the air conditioning (AC) system and ventilation system to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and save the energy of the AC system. This strategy integrates the dynamic model of the AC-cabin system, infection risk assessment, model predictive control (MPC) of the thermal environment inside the cabin, and ventilation control that considers passengers' sneezing. Unlike other existing AC system models, the thermal-health model established can describe not only the system performance but also the virus concentration and risk of COVID-19 infection u

Fragmented Data, Fragmented Care: Strengthening Health Information Systems for Universal Health Coverage in Somalia.

Health information systems (HISs) are essential for achieving universal health coverage (UHC), yet Somalia's health sector remains constrained by fragmented data systems, weak interoperability, limited infrastructure, workforce shortages, and poor governance. This commentary examines the challenges undermining Somalia's digital health transformation and argues that fragmented information systems perpetuate fragmented healthcare delivery. Despite emerging reforms and adoption of digital platforms, such as DHIS2, progress toward UHC remains limited. This commentary draws on a narrative synthesis

Arousal and the attentional network in panic disorder.

Although a great deal of information about the neurobiology of panic disorder is now available, there is a need for an updated etiological model integrating recent findings on the neurobiology of the arousal system and its relationship with higher cortical functions in panic disorder. The current mini-review presents psychophysiological, molecular biological/genetic and functional neuroimaging evidence for dysfunction in major arousal systems of the brain. Such dysfunction may influence the development of panic disorder by precipitating autonomic bodily symptoms and at the same time increasing

The Multidimensional Impact of Traditional Orthopaedic Casting and the Role of Emerging Immobilization Technologies: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Traditional orthopaedic casting has remained the cornerstone of non-surgical fracture management for more than a century. Although plaster and fiberglass casts reliably stabilize fractures, they are associated with physical, psychological, emotional, social, and economic burdens that extend beyond bone healing. Children, older adults, and individuals with pre-existing vulnerabilities may be disproportionately affected. Despite increasing recognition of these complications, existing orthopaedic literature has historically prioritized radiographic healing and biomechanical stability,
