Wide-field OCT angiography for non-human primate retinal imaging.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a well-established research tool for vision research in animal models capable of providing in vivo imaging of the retina. Structural OCT can be enhanced using OCT angiography (OCTA) processing in order to provide simultaneously acquired, automatically co-registered vascular information. Currently available OCT. Currently available OCTA lack either large field of view or high resolution. In this study we developed a wide-field (60-degree), high-resolution (10.5-µm optical transverse) and high-sensitivity (104-dB) OCTA-enabled system for non-human primate im

Osteoarthritis and psoriatic arthritis: findings in three-dimensional biophotonics imaging.

The goal of this study is to capture the quantitative optical features of degenerative finger joints based on x-ray aided three-dimensional (3D) diffuse optical tomography (DOT). It is anticipated that the fused imaging technique can be applied to identifying the significant differences between osteoarthritis (OA) and psoriatic arthritis (PA). For a case study, total 6 subjects were selected to study the distal interphalangeal (DIP) finger joints. 2 OA patients, 2 PA patients and 2 healthy subjects were examined clinically first. Their DIP finger joints were then scanned by the multimodality i

Low-energy femtosecond laser lens fragmentation techniques for cataract.

Femtosecond laser has become an important tool in cataract surgery due to its precision and minimally invasive nature. However, the strong scattering properties of the lens limit surgical efficiency, especially when it comes to effectively cutting highly opaque and hard cataracts with femtosecond laser. This study proposes a method for achieving optical transparency in opaque lenses through tartrazine treatment. This treatment method can effectively enhance the deep focusing ability of femtosecond laser, improving cutting quality and efficiency when used in femtosecond-assisted cataract surger

Serum NfL predicts visual recovery and neuronal loss after optic neuritis.

Optic neuritis, a common manifestation of multiple sclerosis, involves acute axonal injury and variable visual recovery. We evaluated whether serum neurofilament light chain predicts visual and structural outcomes after first-episode optic neuritis. Fifty-one patients (mean age = 33 years, 71% women) were followed for 24 ± 6 months with low-contrast letter acuity testing and optical coherence tomography. Adjusting for age and sex, higher baseline serum neurofilament light chain predicted greater inter-eye differences in retinal nerve fibre layer (-4.65 µm per SD, p = 0.02), ganglion cell/inner

Peripapillary Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Metastasis: A Novel Approach to Treatment.

Peripapillary and circumpapillary retinal intraocular metastases are rare and present a treatment challenge for ophthalmologists because of the high risk of iatrogenic injury to the optic nerve. There are no clear guidelines on the management of these lesions, and many clinicians will initially observe for improvement of the metastases with systemic chemotherapy before considering local therapy with external beam radiation. Radiation to the optic disc carries a significant risk of injuring the optic nerve, leading to worsening of vision. Alternative treatment approaches are needed. We present

Retrobulbar ischemic optic neuropathy associated with sickle cell disease.

A 52-year-old black man with a history of sickle cell SS disease presented with sudden loss of vision in his right eye. Examination of the right eye revealed no light perception and an amaurotic pupil, but an otherwise normal neuro-ophthalmic examination. On initial presentation, there was no evidence of an acute vascular event on funduscopy. Computed tomography failed to demonstrate pathology of the brain or orbit. Repeat fundus examination, 2 weeks later, still failed to demonstrate retinal or optic nerve disease. However, optic nerve pallor and central cupping became evident after 2 months

EXPRESS: Preclinical in-vivo cerebrovascular imaging in rodent models: Methods and applications in Alzheimer's Disease.

The cerebral vasculature maintains brain function through precise blood flow regulation and its disruption is increasingly recognised as an early and functionally significant feature of Alzheimer's disease. Understanding these pathologies requires high-resolution imaging capturing cerebral microvascular flow in vivo, particularly in rodent models enabling longitudinal investigation. However, existing modalities involve inherent trade-offs between spatial and temporal resolution, depth, sensitivity and accessibility, while anaesthetic and methodological variability limit cross-study comparabili
