The cornea in most species is physiologically avascular, and thus this assay allows the measurement of newly formed vessels. The continuous monitoring of neovascular growth in the same animal allows the evaluation of drugs acting as suppressors or stimulators of angiogenesis. Under anesthesia a micropocket is produced in the cornea thickness and the angiogenesis stimulus (tumor tissue, cell suspension, growth factor) is placed into the pocket in order to induce vascular outgrowth from the limbal capillaries. Neovascular development and progression can be modified by the presence of locally rel

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) also known as Rendu Osler syndrome is a vascular hereditary autosomal dominant disease, leading to a dysfunction in the development of arteriovenous capillaries, usually resulting in epistaxis, gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, and iron deficiency anemia. It is believed that by interfering and stopping angiogenesis, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor molecules could be an option for HHT patients. Indeed, an intranasal treatment regime of diluted Avastin (bevacizumab; recombinant humanized antivascular epithelial growth factor immunoglobin G1) has

The rheology of the blood as description of the flow characteristics approves conclusions to the perfusion of the different tissues. Many pathological processes influence the rheological qualities of the blood or the characteristics of the vessels, especially the capillaries. In both cases the perfusion of the tissue can be to a great extent disturbed. The rheological qualities of the blood can be ameliorated in different ways. Rheohaemapheresis is a very effective and save method to reduce high molecular plasma proteins. In the last decades in the meantime rheohaemapheresis was very successfu

An otherwise healthy 20-year-old woman in Goa, India, received antibiotics after a diagnosis of upper respiratory tract infection. One week later, vivax malaria was diagnosed at a health center, but the patient developed respiratory distress and lost consciousness. She arrived at emergency department in shock, breathless, and comatose. She died within minutes. Two independent laboratories later confirmed Plasmodium vivax by microscopy (140,000/microL) and by nested and real-time polymerase chain reaction methods. Post-mortem examination showed congestion of alveolar capillaries by heavy monocy

Atheroembolic renal disease is a part of a multisystem disease and can be defined as renal failure secondary to the occlusion of renal arterioles and glomerular capillaries with cholesterol crystal emboli deriving from the aorta and other major arteries. The kidney is usually involved because of the proximity of the renal arteries to abdominal aorta (where the erosion of atheromatous plaque is most likely to occur), and the high renal blood flow. Cholesterol crystal embolism can also occur in other visceral organs, as well as in the upper and lower extremities. Embolization may occur spontaneo

Hyperlipidemia is a rare cause of pancreatitis. It has been believed that free fatty acids released from hydrolyzed serum chylomicrons or triglycerides and chylomicrons induce hyperlipidemic pancreatitis by damaging acinar cells and capillaries. Type I, IV or V hyperlipidemic (Fredrickson's classification) pancreatitides have distinctive features of increased and heightened serum chylomicron and triglyceride levels. In contrast, type IIb hyperlipidemia usually doesn't have increased chylomicrons. It is a dominant inherited genetic disorder and doesn't manifest the subjective symptom before com

Schönlein-Henoch purpura is a systemic vasculitic disorder involving both arterioles and capillaries. Although it is mainly a disease of early chilhood, it can occur at any age. The disease may be more severe in the few adults who develop this disorder. The clinical manifestations include a classic tetrad: rash, arthralgias, abdominal pain and renal disease. However it may affect almost every other bodily organ such us myocardium, lungs, ureter and nervous system. Pulmonary hemorrhage, a rare complication of Schönlein-Henoch purpura, has been found mainly in adolescents and adults, and it is a

The molecular events involved in lymphatic development are poorly understood. Hence, the genes responsible for hereditary lymphedema are of great interest due to the potential for providing insights into the mechanisms of lymphatic development, the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of lymphedema, and lymphangiogenesis during tumor growth. Mutations in the FOXC2 transcription factor cause a major form of hereditary lymphedema, the lymphedema-distichiasis syndrome. We have conducted a study of Foxc2 expression during mouse development using immunohistochemistry, and examined its expression in

Systemic urticaria remains a challenge in terms of etiology, investigation and management. Most of cases are urticarial vasculitis consequence of inflammatory injury of capillaries and postcapillary venules in the skin. If hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis syndrome is a classical cause, the majority of patients have an underlying systemic disease like systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, mixed cryoglobulinemia, Still disease or cancer. Others systemic urticaria have been reported without clearly evidence of vasculitis like in primary or acquired angioedema, hereditary perio

We describe a 20-year-old man with naevus anaemicus on the chest where, after dermabrasion of the epidermis, enlarged teleangiectatic dark-red vessels were seen within the previously pale area. They were clearly different from those seen on dermabrasion at this site in normal skin and in patients with vitiligo where the area is lighter red with only small punctual bleedings from arterial capillaries. The naevus anaemicus and a port-wine stain (naevus flammeus) in the same location is a phenomenon of vascular twin spotting, which was revealed when the epidermis was removed. The area was transpl

A high percentage of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) show evidence of white matter degeneration known as leukoaraiosis (LA), which is due to chronic ischemia. We found that the periventricular veins tend to become occluded by multiple layers of collagen in the vessel walls in the elderly. This collagen deposition is particularly excessive in LA lesions. Therefore, it is present in the brains of many AD patients, along with other ischemia-causing cerebrovascular pathology. We found evidence that there is severe loss of oligodendrocytes in LA, due to extensive apoptosis. No evidence of in

Organism intoxication with tetrachloromethane induces a complex of transformations in the liver and serum albumins system manifested in the liver as necroses in the central lobe, dilatation of sinus capillaries and blood stasis in them, increased content of total water, and changed magneto-relaxation properties indicating decreased structurization of water. The system of serum albumins shows decreased total concentration of albumins in the serum, decreased constant of 1-(phenylamino)-8-sulfonaphthalene probe binding, increased mean number of probe binding per albumin molecule, and increased ac

The watermelon stomach syndrome is an increasingly recognized cause of persistent acute or occult gastrointestinal bleeding, typically in elderly women. This disorder often presents with severe iron deficiency anemia, and a variety of associated conditions including autoimmune disease, cirrhosis, achlorhydria, and hypochlorhydria. Diagnosis is made by the characteristic endoscopic appearance of visible linear watermelon-like vascular stripes in the antrum. Histology confirms the vascular nature of this disorder, showing dilated and thrombosed capillaries in the lamina propria, associated with

Multiple injections with a mouse monoclonal anti-rat Thy-1 antibody (five times, at weekly intervals) induced marked glomerular sclerotic lesions which are characterized by adhesion of glomerular capillaries to Bowman's capsule and persistent proteinuria in rats. Abnormal production of type I collagen and increased accumulation of type IV collagen and fibronectin were observed in these glomeruli. The glomerular expression of mRNA for these matrix components and transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) were markedly increased at 4 days after the last injections with anti-Thy-1 antibody, but

We can observe and analyse the blood pathway in left ventricular cavity by contrast echocardiography using sonicated albumin, because it can be through the pulmonary capillaries. I. The observational classification of the blood pathway in left ventricular cavity. Group I: The contrast medium comes to the apex directly from the mitral orifice. Group II: The contrast medium comes to the apex along the posterior wall forming the spiral flow and turns back to the outflow tract. Group III: The contrast medium is found like a fireworks only at the apex. II. The factors associated with the blood path

The ultra-structural lesions of lead poisoning and the deposition of lead in liver, kidney, peritoneum, cerebellum and retina of dogs were studied. Specimens were obtained from 5 3-4 mo-old crossbreed dogs each injected i.p. with a total dose of 120 mg lead acetate, divided in 10 equal doses of 12 mg, administered every other day. Two dogs were controls. Histopathological examination revealed degeneration of the epithelial cells of the urinary tubules, the endothelial cells of the renal capillaries and the hepatocytes. Characteristic lead inclusion bodies were observed intracytoplasmically and

The synovium from a patient with mixed connective tissue disease and destructive ankle monoarthritis was studied in detail to determine its immunohistological characteristics. Fibrinoid necrotic tissue on the surface of the synovium, multi-layered lining cells, increased numbers of capillaries, interstitial edema, infiltration of macrophages, relatively small numbers of lympho-plasma cells and polymorphonuclear leukocytes, scattered bone fragments, and multinucleated giant cells were observed. Many cells in the lining and sublining area were positive for CD68 and MAC387. Lower layers of increa

The interest in structure and function of peritoneum increased when it turned out that it may be used as biologic dialysis membrane. The structure of peritoneum is of significant value in the course of peritoneal dialysis. The role of the mesothelium, the interstitium, blood and lymphatic capillaries, major constituents of peritoneum, have been deeply studied. Moreover, it is well known that process of dialysis influence the structure and function of different peritoneal elements. Having more date about physiological structure of these elements, and making conditions of peritoneal dialysis mor

Morphological features of Swyer-James syndrome were studied in a specimen obtained during left pneumonectomy. A 67-year-old woman was admitted because her left lung was hyperlucent and contained a solitary nodule. Primary lung adenocarcinoma complicated with Swyer-James syndrome was diagnosed, and left pneumonectomy done. The left upper lobe was inflated and fixed for morphological study. The volume of the specimen was obviously lower than normal but the bronchial branching was normal. Macroscopically, the specimen had irregular bronchial walls, bronchiectatic changes, and dilation of distal a

We studied the histopathologic changes of three eyes enucleated two weeks, eight weeks, and 17 months, respectively, after noncontact Nd:YAG cyclophotocoagulation. The histologic findings at two weeks were destruction of the nonpigmented and pigmented ciliary body epithelium, occlusion of the capillaries of the ciliary processes, and ciliary body stromal necrosis in the region of the processes. Hyperplasia of the pigmented and nonpigmented epithelium, fibrosis and near total atrophy of the ciliary processes, and partial atrophy of the ciliary muscles were present at eight weeks and 17 months.
