Uricase after modification with monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) is currently the sole agent to treat refractory gout. For formulating Bacillus fastidious uricase, succinimidyl carbonate of mPEG-5000 (SC-mPEG5k) and succinimidyl succinate of mPEG-5000 (SS-mPEG5k) were compared. BACKGROUND: Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS/DRESS) is a severe adverse systemic reaction. Reactivation of human herpesvirus (HHV) family members other than HHV-6 has been reported in patients with DIHS. Reactivation of HHV family members is generally characterized by increased serum antibody titers against the virus. By contrast, clinical symptoms caused by viral reactivation are relatively rare.
METHOD: We report a case of DIHS with intractable genital ulcers from reactivation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in accordance with reactivation of HHV-6 and cytomegalovirus (CMV).

Rheumatic syndromes are cause for morbidity in patients with end-stage renal disease. Recent advances in understanding the role of tissue remodeling have provided insight into the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for some of these manifestations. Here, we survey recent and clinically relevant advances in translational research that impact our understanding of rheumatic syndromes seen in patients with significant renal disease. The management of acute and chronic crystalline arthropathies in chronic kidney disease and hemodialysis patients is discussed.

OBJECTIVE: Computed tomography (CT) has high accuracy for tophus detection. This study assessed reliability of CT measurement of tophus volume and compared reproducibility of CT with physical measurement of tophus size.
