OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with simultaneous tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnoses in children.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study in TB-HIV co-infected children aged <13 years admitted to Tygerberg Hospital in 2012. Data were collected from medical records, laboratory results and electronic TB treatment registers. A simultaneous TB-HIV diagnosis was defined as an HIV diagnosis made within 7 days before or after a diagnosis of TB.

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study analyzed benzodiazepine usage patterns in relation to guideline recommendations for the treatment of generalized convulsive status epilepticus (GCSE) as practiced by emergency medical services (EMS) and the emergency department (ED) of an inner-city hospital. Secondary outcomes of interest were adverse events and admission/discharge outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) accounts for 5-10% of cases of acute cholecystitis. The advantage of interval cholecystectomy for patients with AAC is unclear. Therefore, a retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with AAC at our institution was performed over a 5-year period.

Bilious vomiting syndrome (BVS) is a condition historically associated with early morning vomiting of bile, but it is otherwise poorly characterized. The vomiting is thought to result from a reflux of duodenal fluid into the gastric lumen causing mucosal irritation.
