Leptospirosis outbreak in Ecuador in 2023: A pilot study for surveillance from a One Health perspective.

Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease that is endemic in tropical regions, including Ecuador. It is caused by spirochetes of the genus Leptospira, which can infect humans through animal reservoirs such as rats and dogs, or through contact with contaminated water or soil. In March 2023, public health authorities declared a concerning outbreak of leptospirosis in Durán Cantón, located in the Coastal region of Ecuador. For the first time in the country, a multidisciplinary approach involving physicians and veterinarians was implemented for the surveillance and management of this leptospir

Lower cerebello-cortical functional connectivity in veterans with reactive aggression symptoms: A pilot study.

A significant number of veterans experience irritability and aggression symptoms as a result of being exposed to extremely stressful and life-threatening situations. In addition to the well-established involvement of the brain's cortico-subcortical circuit in aggression-related behaviours, a role of the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN) in reactive aggression has been suggested. In the present study, seed-based resting-state functional connectivity between the DCN and cortico-subcortical areas was explored in veterans with and without reactive aggression symptoms. Nineteen male veterans with reacti

Accurate gingival segmentation from 3D images with artificial intelligence: an animal pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Gingival phenotype plays an important role in dental diagnosis and treatment planning. Traditionally, determining the gingival phenotype is done by manual probing of the gingival soft tissues, an invasive and time-consuming procedure. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of an alternatively novel, non-invasive technology based on the precise 3-dimension (3D) soft tissue reconstruction from intraoral scanning and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to predict the gingival biotype. METHODS: As a proof-of-concept, Yorkshire pig mandibles were scanned, and the CBC

CT-based retrospective cohort study for the evaluation of mandibular condylar dimensions - A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a unique structure of the body where the mandible, one of the important facial bones, articulates with the temporal part of the skull bone. Obtaining morphometric dimensions for mandibular condyle is important for performing an accurate pre/postoperative assessment, planning temporomandibular and orthognathic surgeries, and applications in forensic sciences in context to the Indian population, which is presently based on dimensions of Caucasian population from available literature. Several investigators noticed the variation in the craniofacial

Banks of the Superior Temporal Sulcus in Alzheimer's Disease: A Pilot Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping Study.

BACKGROUND: Brain iron homeostasis is disrupted in neurodegeneration and areas of iron overload partially overlap with regions of amyloid and tau burden in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previous studies demonstrated alterations in brain iron accumulation in AD using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). OBJECTIVE: Here, we investigate brain alterations of QSM values in AD and non-AD patients as compared to healthy controls (HC) in the superior temporal sulcus and its banks (BANKSSTS), one of the top AD-affected regions. METHODS: Thirty-four patients who underwent brain MRI including a multi

Characterization of Vaginal Microbial Community Dynamics in the Pathogenesis of Incident Bacterial Vaginosis, a Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite more than 60 years of research, the etiology of bacterial vaginosis (BV) remains controversial. In this pilot study, we used shotgun metagenomic sequencing to characterize vaginal microbial community changes before the development of incident BV (iBV). METHODS: A cohort of African American women with a baseline healthy vaginal microbiome (no Amsel criteria, Nugent score 0-3 with no Gardnerella vaginalis morphotypes) were followed for 90 days with daily self-collected vaginal specimens for iBV (≥2 consecutive days of a Nugent score of 7-10). Shotgun metagenomic sequencing w

Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia and Clinically Suspected Acute Pancreatitis in Dogs, a Pilot Study.

Acute pancreatitis can be a complication of massive hemolysis, above all when intravascular in nature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between canine immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) and clinically suspected acute pancreatitis (CSAP) and the role of calculated free plasma hemoglobin (Hbfp) in CSAP occurrence/development. In this cohort study the records of 95 dogs with IMHA and 95 sick dogs with pathologies other than IMHA were compared for CSAP occurrence/development. At presentation, 12/95 dogs with IMHA met criteria for CSAP, while only 3/95 sick c

Association between fluoride exposure in drinking water and cognitive deficits in children: A pilot study.

Fluoride (F) exposure in drinking water may lead to reduced cognitive function among children; however, findings largely remain inconclusive. In this pilot study, we examined associations between a range of chronic F exposures (low to high: 0.4 to 15.5 mg/L) in drinking water and cognition in school-aged children (5-14 years, n = 74) in rural Ethiopia. Fluoride exposure was determined from samples of community-based drinking water wells and urine. Cognitive performance was measured using: 1) assessments of ability to draw familiar objects (donkey, house, and person), and 2) a validated Cambrid

Acupuncture for Attenuating Frontal Lobe α Band Asymmetry Induced by Anger: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have shown that anger can lead to frontal lobe α (8-13 Hz) band asymmetry (FAA) in electroencephalogram (EEG), in accordance with motivational direction. This pilot study aimed to investigate the impact of acupuncture on FAA elicited by anger. METHODS: Thirty-four right-handed participants scoring above 75 points on the Novaco Anger Scale were included. Baseline EEG signals were recorded for eight minutes using a 32-channel cap under comfortable conditions. Anger was induced through a nine-minute sequence of Articulated Thoughts in Simulated Situations (ATSS) task

Asbestos exposure as an additional risk factor for small duct intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: a pilot study.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is a rare malignancy, recently classified in small duct and large duct morphological subtypes. Growing evidence suggests asbestos as a putative risk factor for iCCA, albeit no correlation between asbestos and iCCA morphology has been investigated so far. The aim of the present study was to assess the relationship between asbestos exposure and iCCA morphological subtype. Forty patients with surgically removed iCCA were prospectively enrolled: asbestos exposure was assessed according to the Italian National Mesothelioma Register questionnaire. From the surg

Deep learning based identification of pituitary adenoma on surgical endoscopic images: a pilot study.

Accurate tumor identification during surgical excision is necessary for neurosurgeons to determine the extent of resection without damaging the surrounding tissues. No conventional technologies have achieved reliable performance for pituitary adenomas. This study proposes a deep learning approach using intraoperative endoscopic images to discriminate pituitary adenomas from non-tumorous tissue inside the sella turcica. Static images were extracted from 50 intraoperative videos of patients with pituitary adenomas. All patients underwent endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery with a 4 K ultrahigh-de

Urinary Cytokines as Potential Biomarkers of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 80% of all cases. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a transitional state between normal aging and AD. Early detection is crucial, as irreversible brain damage occurs before symptoms manifest. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers for early detection of AD by analyzing urinary cytokine concentrations. We investigated 37 cytokines in AD, MCI, and cognitively normal individuals (NC), assessing their associations with AD development. METHODS: Urinary cytokine concentrations were measu

Differential gait adaptation patterns in Parkinson's disease - a split belt treadmill pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Interventions using split belt treadmills (SBTM) aim to improve gait symmetry (GA) in Parkinson's disease (PD). Comparative effects in conjugated SBTM conditions were not studied systematically despite potentially affecting intervention outcomes. We compared gait adaptation effects instigated by SBTM walking with respect to the type (increased\decreased speed) and the side (more/less affected) of the manipulated belt in PD. METHODS: Eight individuals with PD performed four trials of SBTM walking, each consisted of baseline tied belt configuration, followed by split belt setting -

Relevance and Feasibility of Group Traumatic Episode Protocol Delivered to Migrants: A Pilot Field Study.

INTRODUCTION: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are commonly observed in migrants. Although Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can be helpful to treat these diseases, it remains difficult to propose EMDR as an individual intervention in help-seeking migrants. Group EMDR, like Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP), which was built around the 8 phases of the original EMDR protocol, could offer an effective treatment to a large number of people. It may also be more resource-efficient to provide psychiatric care to migrants. METHODS: In
