Comparative effectiveness of bone grafting vs. total hip arthroplasty in non-traumatic osteonecrosis of femoral head: a 5-year follow-up study with patient-reported outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To compare mid-term survival and health-related quality of life differences between bone grafting (BG) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) in non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (NTONFH) patients under 50 years of age. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study analyzed 165 consecutive NTONFH patients (2015–2020) undergoing BG (n = 55) or THA (n = 110). Primary outcomes were 5-year survival (revision endpoint), with secondary outcomes including Harris Hip Score, complications, and patient-reported measures (SF-36, JHEQ, UCLA). Survival analysis employed log-rank tests

Validation of a long-term and effective physical exercise management for ankylosing spondylitis: study protocol for a decentralized randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory disease, leads to significant physical and psychosocial burdens due to progressive spinal rigidity and high disability rates. Although exercise is well-established as a key factor in delaying deformity and enhancing function, maintaining long-term adherence poses a significant hurdle. This study aims to validate the effectiveness of an Exercise Management Mode based on the Attitude-Social Influence-Self-Efficacy (ASE) model (EMM-ASE) in enhancing exercise behavior and clinical outcomes among AS patients. METHODS: This decentraliz

Effects of behavioural exercise therapy on the effectiveness of multidisciplinary rehabilitation for chronic non-specific low back pain: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The long-term effects of behavioural medical rehabilitation (BMR), as a type of multidisciplinary rehabilitation, in the treatment of chronic non-specific low back pain (CLBP) have been shown. However, the specific effects of behavioural exercise therapy (BET) compared to standard exercise therapy (SET) within BMR are not well understood. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of BMR + BET compared to BMR + SET in individuals with CLBP in a two-armed, pre-registered, multicentre, parallel, randomised controlled trial (RCT). METHODS: A total of 351 adults with CLBP in

Assessing various sensorimotor and cognitive functions in people with epilepsy is feasible with robotics.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, along with comorbid cognitive and psychosocial impairment. Current gold standards of assessment can quantify cognitive and motor performance, but may not capture all subtleties of behavior. Here, we study the feasibility of assessing various upper limb sensorimotor and cognition functions in people with epilepsy using the Kinarm robotic assessment system. We quantify performance across multiple behavioral domains and additionally consider the possible effects of epilepsy subtype and medication. METHODS

Lay-therapist-delivered, low-intensity, psychosocial intervention for refugees and asylum seekers (PROSPER): protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Asylum seekers and refugees (AS&Rs) experience impaired mental health and wellbeing, related to stresses in their country of origin, experiences in transit and reception on arrival, including significant barriers to accessing mainstream services. Their contact with health care is often crisis-driven and mediated through non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Problem Management Plus (PM+) is a psychosocial intervention recommended by the World Health Organisation to address distress experienced by adults affected by humanitarian crises. We are investigating its application for the f

Supervised prenatal Pilates and trajectories of female sexual function and sexual distress throughout pregnancy: a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is associated with progressive physiological and psychosocial changes that may adversely affect female sexual function and increase sexual distress. Although prenatal Pilates has demonstrated benefits for maternal physical and psychological well-being, its potential influence on female sexual health throughout pregnancy remains unclear. This study investigated the longitudinal association between regular supervised prenatal Pilates participation and changes in female sexual function and sexual distress during pregnancy. METHODS: This prospective observational cohort st

Systematic review of integrated mental and physical health services for children and young people with eating and functional symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that by recognising the psychosocial component of illness as equally important to the biological components, care becomes more holistic, and patients can benefit. Providing this type of care requires collaboration among health professionals, rather than working in isolation, to achieve better outcomes. However, there is a lack of evidence about the implementation of integrated health care. This review focuses on children and young people experiencing eating disorders (i.e. disorders related to feeding and eating) or functional symptom disorders (i.e. medically une

Symptom burden and patient characteristics in specialist palliative care: a descriptive analysis.

BACKGROUND: In Germany, specialist palliative care (SPC) is provided by palliative care units (PCU), hospital-based palliative care advisory (PCA) teams, and specialist palliative home care (SPHC) teams. Systematic cross-setting comparisons are lacking. Such comparisons are essential to identify setting-specific patient needs and differences and to inform tailoring of care structures, resource allocation, and training to setting-specific needs. We therefore aim to compare settings regarding patient characteristics, symptom/problem burden, functional status, and palliative care phase. METHODS:

The role of age and severity of deformity in the choice of treatment for pectus carinatum: a comparison of braces and surgical correction.

BACKGROUND: Pectus carinatum (PC) is a congenital chest wall deformity that can lead to aesthetic, functional and psychosocial problems, especially in adolescence. The choice of treatment usually depends on clinical factors such as the severity of the deformity, the stiffness of the chest wall and the age of the patient. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of conservative and surgical treatment modalities for PC and to examine the associations among age, deformity severity and treatment selection. METHODS: A retrospective review of 118 patients treated between 2009 and 2022 was

Profiles of Sexual Assault, Psychiatric Morbidity, and Global Functioning in Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) has profound psychiatric and developmental consequences; however, the relationship between specific abuse characteristics and mental health outcomes in the Indian context remains insufficiently studied. This study examined psychiatric morbidity, developmental psychopathology, and functional impairment among children with CSA. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 children aged 6-17 years whose cases were registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and referred to a government-supported protection center. A prospective pilot study to evaluate an animated home-based physical exercise program as a treatment option for patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Physical exercises and physiotherapy are of great importance for maintenance of joint function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, many RA patients complain about problems to receive prescriptions or have a lack of access to physiotherapy. Recent reports have shown positive effects of the Wii game console on physical and psychosocial conditions of patients with other underlying diseases. The primary objectives of this prospective controlled pilot study were to investigate feasibility and patients' assessment using an animated home-based exercise program. METHOD: T

Palliative care for AIDS at a large urban teaching hospital: program description and preliminary outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Despite major advances in therapy, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) remains an important cause of morbidity and mortality in young adult populations. As AIDS has been converted into a chronic disease, it has resulted for some patients in a more protracted course of symptomatic illness. Comprehensive care for late-stage human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease now involves an increasingly complex mixture of disease-specific and palliative therapies, requiring coordination and collaboration between AIDS and palliative care services. We describe the experience of developin

Cognitive behavioural therapy for adults with dissociative seizures (CODES): a pragmatic, multicentre, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative seizures are paroxysmal events resembling epilepsy or syncope with characteristic features that allow them to be distinguished from other medical conditions. We aimed to compare the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) plus standardised medical care with standardised medical care alone for the reduction of dissociative seizure frequency. METHODS: In this pragmatic, parallel-arm, multicentre randomised controlled trial, we initially recruited participants at 27 neurology or epilepsy services in England, Scotland, and Wales. Factors influencing pain intensity in knee osteoarthritis: a cross-sectional biopsychosocial perspective.

BACKGROUND: Pain is pivotal in managing knee osteoarthritis (KOA), necessitating tailored rehabilitative strategies. The biopsychosocial framework suggests that a multifaceted approach is crucial for understanding and managing pain in KOA patients. This study explored the factors that influence pain intensity through biological and psychosocial determinants from a biopsychological perspective in KOA patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 150 KOA patients with Kellgren-Lawrence (K/L) grades 2-4. Patients were classified into three groups based on their Visual Analogue Scale sco
