PURPOSE: To report a case of temporary bilateral corneal denting in a patient who underwent cardiovascular surgery under general anesthesia.
OBSERVATIONS: A 71-year-old male with no history of ophthalmological disease experienced bilateral corneal denting immediately after undergoing surgery for aneurysm of the thoracic aorta under general anesthesia. Anesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with rocuronium bromide and remifentanil hydrochloride. The initial examination revealed significant denting on the surface of both the corneas and ocular hypotension. Visual evaluation could n

Breast surgery is frequently associated with postoperative pain, nausea and vomiting, that result in increased patient's suffering, prolongation of hospital stays and related costs. Thoracic paravertebral nerve block (TPVB) is a viable option to the classic multimodal analgesia in breast surgery as it enhances surgical anesthesia and postoperative analgesia. In this review, we report the results of a number of studies on the role of TPVB in breast surgery. This technique is associated with a superior control of the pain, a reduction in opioids consumption after surgery, a decrease in postopera

41 babies were operated upon in emergency in the cardiac surgery department. 11 of them were submitted to open heart surgery and 30 were operated without extra corporeal circulation. Amongst them, there were 21 coarctations of thoracic aorta either isolated or associated with other cardiac malformations. 13 of them, presented a pericardial effusion, and the mean age was 3 months. First of all, the notion of emergency in cardiac surgery of the new-born is stressed. Then, premedication and technic of anaesthesia are shortly described. The authors insist on the frequency of lethal cardiac fibrill

The most common indication for surgical treatment of parathyroid gland pathology is primary hyperparathyroidism where extirpation of the pathologically changed parathyroid gland is the first-choice treatment. Embryonic development of the lower pair of parathyroid glands is quite complex and is closely related to the tissue of the thymus; for this reason it is not uncommon for a parathyroid adenoma to be located in the mediastinum or directly in the tissue of the thymus. The treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism is becoming a multidisciplinary issue in which radiodiagnostics and nuclear medi

Surgery of mostly benign giant tumours involving large part of the chest is a special surgical challenge. The problems comprise difficulties of surgical technique, management of the narcosis and postoperative intensive care. An additional peculiarity of our case is the extreme confliction of the otherwise presumably evident indication for surgery. Our 64-years-old male patient has been suffering from increasing dyspnoea on exercise for one and a half years. A chest X-ray performed for other reasons demonstrated a large, expansive structural change in the right thoracic cavity. Lung biopsy perf

Thoracoscopic resection of small subsolid nodules is challenging and requires preoperative localization. We investigated the efficacy, safety, and factors affecting accuracy in localizing pulmonary nodules with electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB)-guided dye marking.Patients with small subsolid nodule(s) who underwent thoracoscopic resection after ENB-guided dye marking were retrospectively reviewed. Dye marking was performed at the nearest pleura and the localized nodule(s) was resected thoracoscopically. Efficacy was evaluated by success rates of dye marking and resection of nodules

BACKGROUND: Masculinizing top surgery (bilateral mastectomy with chest wall reconstruction) is an important gender-affirming procedure sought by many transmasculine and nonbinary individuals. Current literature is focused primarily on details of surgical technique and complication rates, with limited data available on how top surgery affects subjective quality-of-life measures.
METHODS: An anonymous online survey was distributed to 81 of the senior author's former top-surgery patients. The survey response rate was 72 percent (58 respondents). Responses were analyzed to investigate quality of

OBJECTIVES: To describe and assess the techniques of spontaneous-ventilation video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (SV-VATS) for tracheal/carinal resections and compare the outcomes with the conventional thoracoscopic intubated method.
METHODS: From May 2015 to November 2016, some 18 consecutive patients with malignant or benign diseases invading distal trachea and carina who met the criteria for SV were treated by SV-VATS resection. To evaluate the feasibility of this novel technique, they were compared with a control group consisting of 14 consecutive patients with the same diseases who unde

Various reported surgical approaches for the treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) exist and no firm evidence exists for any approach. A 16-year-old and a 29-year-old male presented with numbness in the upper limb. Neurologic TOS was diagnosed, and surgery was planned for the resection of the first rib and scalene muscles. Through an infraclavicular incision, open resection of the anterior scalene muscle and the anterior aspect of the first rib was performed. With the assistance of endoscopy, the middle scalene muscles and the posterior aspect of the first rib were resected. Preoperative

Surgery to repair pectus excavatum (PE) is often associated with severe postoperative pain, which can impact the length of hospital stay (LOS). While thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) has traditionally been used for pain management in PE, its placement can sometimes result in severe neurological complications. Recently, paravertebral block (PVB) and erector spinae plane block (ESPB) have been recommended for many other chest and abdominal surgeries. However, due to the more severe and prolonged pain associated with PE repair, it is still unclear whether continuous administration of these block

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hernias are rare conditions, most are the results of an injury or previous thoracic surgery.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 48-year-old woman injured in a car accident. The examination in the trauma centre revealed a chest injury with herniation of the lung parenchyma into the chest wall and fractures of long bones of lower limbs. Initially, an osteosynthesis of the left femur and the right tibia fracture were performed. The patient underwent a subsequent surgery to repair the pulmonary hernia.
CONCLUSION: A pulmonary hernia is diagnosed either directly during a

A 34-year-old female patient was presented to the general surgery clinic of the hospital complaining of a growing tangible swelling in her neck. In physical examination, the patient had two palpable soft nodules in the left lobe of the thyroid which hadn't invaded the surrounding tissues. The function of thyroid gland was normal and fine needle aspiration (FNA) result reported it benign. The patient went through a left lobectomy and isthmectomy. The histopathology report concluded a nodular hyperplasia and a Hydatid cyst. After surgery, the patient was examined searching for any other organs c

CONTEXT: Hodgkin Lymphoma is rarely diagnosed as spinal cord compression syndrome. Caused by an epidural mass, this complication is often encountered in a late stage of the disease. We report the case of a 40-year-old man presenting with symptoms of low thoracic spinal cord compression due to an epidural tumor on the MRI.
FINDINGS: Emergent surgery was undertaken on this patient, consisting in laminectomy and tumor resection. After surgery, pain relief and mild neurological improvement were noticed. The histological study revealed a Hodgkin Lymphoma and the patient was referred to chemotherap

After colorectal resection surgery, early urinary catheter removal has been promoted as a part of the national Surgical Care Improvement Project. However, the decrease in urinary tract infection expected with this strategy must be balanced against an increased risk for urinary retention. A systematic review of the literature was undertaken to summarize the evidence for and against early postoperative urinary catheter removal. For nonpelvic colorectal resection, the evidence supports removal of the catheter on postoperative day 1 for patients who are not at high risk for urinary retention, incl

Spinal cord compression is an extremely serious complication of hereditary multiple exostoses (HME). A case of HME with compression of the cervical spinal cord is reported. Complete recovery following surgery was achieved. A review of the relevant literature revealed 51 previous cases of HME with cord/cauda equina compression. Most patients were under 30 years of age with more men affected than women. The family history was positive in 60%. The cervical and thoracic areas were predominantly affected, with the symptoms usually developing slowly. Recovery following surgery is to be expected in t

PURPOSE: Kyphosis of the cervical spine has been reported in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, few reports have compared sagittal spine alignment of AIS patients with that of the normal population. The purposes of this study were (1) to analyze the characteristics of sagittal alignment, including the cervical spine, in AIS patients with a single thoracic curve (Lenke type 1) compared with the age-matched normal population and (2) to quantify the changes in sagittal alignment of the cervical spine and thoracic kyphosis following posterior spinal fusion.
METHODS: In

In newborn infants, thoraco-abdominal surgery is a serious intervention with respect to gas exchange and lung mechanics. This prospective clinical study compared surgery-induced changes in functional residual capacity (FRC) and ventilation inhomogeneity (VI) indices with changes in conventional monitoring parameters. Of 29 ventilated newborns (mean weight 2,770+/-864 g at surgery), 13, nine and seven underwent thoracic, abdominal or congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) surgery, respectively. The multiple breath washout (MBWO) technique using heptafluoropropane as tracer gas (Babylog 8000; Drä

UNLABELLED: MINI: Proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) is a common, yet incompletely understood, complication of surgery for adult spinal deformity. We analyzed 440 consecutive adult spinal deformity patients for trends in development of PJK and need for revision surgery. pelvic tilt and thoracic kyphosis were predictive for developing PJK, while radiographic evidence of proximal junctional failure was predictive for proceeding to revision.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of prospectively collected data.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine which radiographic parameters and surgi

BACKGROUND: Non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery combines a minimally invasive technique with multimodal locoregional analgesia to enhance recovery. The mainstay sedation protocol involves propofol and fentanyl. Dexmedetomidine, given its opioid-sparing effect with minimal respiratory depression, facilitates sedation in non-intubated patients. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of dexmedetomidine during non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.
METHODS: A total of 114 patients who underwent non-intubated video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery between June 2015 and
