INTRODUCTION: Term prelabor rupture of membranes (TPROM) occurs in approximately 8 % of pregnancies. This condition regularly requires medical intervention such as induction of labor. The actual data concerning cervical ripening in case of TPROM does not favor any of the available techniques. This is the first study comparing dinoprostone versus Foley catheter for cervical ripening in TPROM.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective before-after study. We enrolled all the patients with confirmed TPROM after 37 weeks of gestation (WG) who required cervical ripening. Women were includ

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to characterize the clinical safety profile of transendocardial injection catheters (TIC) reported in the published literature.
BACKGROUND: Transendocardial delivery is a minimally invasive approach to deliver potential therapeutic agents directly into the myocardium. The rate of adverse events across TIC is uncertain.
METHODS: A systematic search was performed for trial publications using TIC. Procedure-associated adverse event data were abstracted, pooled and compared across catheters for active treatment and placebo injected patients. The transendocar…

Perioperative cardiac tamponade during central venous catheter placement is rare. We present a case of tamponade from pulmonary artery injury during dialysis catheter placement resulting in complicated sternotomy and hospital course. A 52-year-old female experienced intraoperative hypotension, rapidly identified as tamponade, that was treated with an emergent paramedian sternotomy. Patient experienced postdischarge dehiscence and osteomyelitis requiring multiple reoperations. This case is the first report of a deviated paramedian sternotomy performed mainly through ribs. The complications expe

INTRODUCTION: An airway exchange catheter is a hollow-lumen tube able to deliver oxygen and maintain access to a difficult endotracheal airway. This case report demonstrates an undocumented complication associated with an airway exchange catheter and jet ventilation, particularly in a patient with reduced airway diameter due to thick endotracheal secretions. Due to the frequent use of airway exchange catheters in the intensive care unit, this report highlights an adverse event of bilateral pneumothoraces that can be encountered by clinicians.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 24…

PURPOSE: Current manual catheters for transbronchial biopsy in the lung lack a steering ability, which hampers a physician's ability to reach nodules in the peripheral lung. The objective of this paper is to design and build a multisection robot with a follow-the-leader motion and compare the performance of the conventional catheter and our robotic catheter in the right main and right segmental lobar bronchus.
METHODS: A three-section continuum robot with an outer diameter of 3 mm was developed. Each section includes one anchored wire and two driving wires made of stainless steel. Follow-the-…

Whilst antibiotic lock is effective to eradicate biofilm bacteria on hemodialysis catheters, this adjunctive method has scarcely been tested in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. After our previous successful experience of its use to salvage two Tenckhoff catheters, we encountered another patient with problematic biofilm-associated PD peritonitis who strongly refused catheter removal. As a result, antibiotic lock was given once daily, initially, with continuation of the usual PD schedule. However, relapsing peritonitis could not be prevented until we administered antibiotic lock without dialys…

OBJECTIVES: Severe LV dysfunction and advanced age are associated with VT recurrence after catheter ablation in patients with post-infarction drug-refractory VT. We present retrospective analysis of long-term outcome after single and repeat VT ablation procedures in patients with ischemic heart disease.
DESIGN: Patients with recurrent VT post infarction who underwent catheter ablation between 2006 and 2017 in Isala Heart Centre were retrospectively analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to identify predictors of arrhythmia recurrence post ablation. Patients were allocated to

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to determine factors that influence time to removal of tunneled hemodialysis catheter (THC), probability of repeat vascular access creation, and time to repeat vascular access.
METHODS: The Optum Clinformatics Data Mart claims database was queried from 2011 to 2017 for patients who initiated hemodialysis with a THC. Time from initial arteriovenous fistula (AVF)/graft (AVG) to THC removal and time to repeat AVF/AVG were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards. The likelihood of repeat AVF/AVG was analyzed using logistic regression.
RESULTS: A total of 8941 vascular acc

A 23-year-old man, diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and who had undergone several catheter ablations, presented 2 months after the most recent ablation with cardiac tamponade following physical exertion. Emergency surgery revealed a perforation between the inferior vena cava and the right atrium. This perforation was repaired with a bovine pericardium patch. To our knowledge, this is the first case of delayed cardiac tamponade after catheter ablation due to a Valsalva manoeuvre (such as weightlifting) in a patient with a normal international normalized ratio and normal platelet co

BACKGROUND: Phlebitis is one of the most common complications of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) that can lead to many complications, including higher medical costs and longer hospital stays.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the incidence of phlebitis associated with PIVC and determine its risk factors among hospitalized pediatric patients.
METHODS: An observational and cross-sectional design was used. Data such as patient's demographics, medical diagnosis, place of admission, and other PIVC characteristics were recorded. In addition, observations of PIVC sites over 12-hour intervals were condu

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether self-discontinuation of a transurethral catheter is noninferior to office discontinuation in patients requiring indwelling catheterization for postoperative urinary retention after pelvic reconstructive surgery.
METHODS: In this randomized noninferiority trial, patients with postoperative urinary retention after pelvic reconstructive surgery were assigned to self-discontinuation or office discontinuation of their catheter 1 week after surgery. The primary outcome was a noninferiority comparison of postoperative urinary retention at 1 week. Self-discontinuation p

BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation is being increasingly performed for rhythm control of atrial fibrillation (AF). Heart failure (HF) frequently coexists with AF because they share common risk factors.
STUDY QUESTION: This study aims at identifying the characteristics and procedural outcomes of patients with HF undergoing catheter ablation of AF.
STUDY DESIGN: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed 264 consecutive patients who underwent catheter ablation for AF. Seventy-three patients (28%) had a known history of stage C HF either with reduced ejection fraction or preserved ejection frac

BACKGROUND: To assess the effectiveness of radiofrequency catheter ablation for lone atrial fibrillation in young adults.
METHODS: This single-centre, retrospective, observational study enrolled 75 consecutive patients (86.7% men) under 35 (median, 30) years old with lone atrial fibrillation (68% paroxysmal, 26.7% persistent, and 5.3% long-standing persistent) without other cardiopulmonary diseases who underwent catheter ablation between April 2009 and May 2017. Procedural endpoints were circumferential pulmonary vein ablation for atrial fibrillation with pulmonary vein trigger, and target ab

Background Although it has been reported that renal function can improve after catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF), long-term changes in renal function and its relationship to rhythm outcomes have not yet been evaluated. We explored the 5-year change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in AF patients depending on medical therapy and catheter ablation. Methods and Results Among 1963 patients who underwent AF catheter ablation and 14 056 with AF under medical therapy in the National Health Insurance Service database, we compared 571 with AF catheter ablation (59±10 years old

BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation is considered as the mainstay treatment for patients with symptomatic atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to determine the predictors of 30-day readmission after catheter ablation for AF.
METHODS: The study cohort consisted of patients who underwent AF catheter ablation (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision 427.31 and procedure code 37.34) in 2014, identified from the National Readmission Database.
RESULTS: Our final cohort consisted of 5322 unweighted cases, of which 4736 (89%) constituted the no-readmission group and 586 patients (11%) the r

The pathogenesis of formation of cystic artery pseudoaneurysms is not well understood, but is thought to result from erosion of the cystic artery wall from the adjacent inflammatory process associated with acute or chronic cholecystitis. The presented case discusses an incident of hemorrhage from a cystic artery pseudoaneurysm resulting in a large perihepatic hematoma as well as hemobilia, which developed after a routine cholecystostomy catheter exchange. This was treated with transcatheter embolization using ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer.

We report the use of a sacral plexus catheter for continuous local anaesthetic infusion in a patient with a unilateral sacral ala fracture following a fall from a horse. Although sacral plexus blockade has been well described for lower limb surgery, an ultrasound-guided continuous catheter technique for conservatively managed fractures has not been described. Despite appropriate oral analgesia, the patient reported severe pain, particularly in the right gluteal region, which meant she was unable to sit upright or take deep breaths. A sacral plexus catheter was inserted with ultrasound guidance
