Confession, evidence, and the juridical construction of male drug use in Palestinian appellate and cassation judgments.

This study examines how 19 Palestinian appellate and cassation judgments issued from 2016 to 2021 construct male drug use through confession, documentary evidence, statutory classification, and evidentiary linkage. Combining qualitative socio-legal analysis with reflexive thematic analysis, it identifies six patterns: temporal biographies of use; denials separating social familiarity from criminal attribution; bureaucratic stabilization of evidence; male mediation and mobility; first-time-use classification; and failed linkage in shared or ambiguous spaces. Juridical construction denotes the p

Role of the trigeminal system in pancreatic innervation: new concept and challenge - a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: The pancreas is innervated by a complex network including vagal, sympathetic, and spinal sensory pathways but recent studies suggest that the trigeminal system, known for its role in sensory perception, may also contribute to pancreatic innervation. METHODS: This review explores the hypothesis that the trigeminal system, via sensory neuropeptides such as calcitonin gene-related peptide and substance P, plays a role in pancreatic sensory innervation. Several hypotheses are proposed to explain this potential role, including embryological development, antidromic activity, and neuro

A Promise Without Panacea: Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in Modern Psychiatry.

Psychedelic-assisted therapies have re-emerged as a subject of increasing scientific and clinical interest in psychiatry, particularly in the context of persistent treatment gaps for conditions such as treatment-resistant depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders. Compounds, including psilocybin and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, are being evaluated in controlled clinical trials and have demonstrated promising therapeutic effects when administered within structured psychotherapeutic frameworks. Emerging neurobiological evidence suggests that these agents may p

Soil to Synapse: Molecular Insights into the Neurotoxicity of Common Gardening Chemicals in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease.

The common gardening herbicides and fertilizers are crucial for weed control and plant growth, yet they may have potentially harmful impacts on neurological health. This review explored the possible effects of these chemicals on neurodegenerative disorders, especially Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). The mode of action of several frequently used gardening chemicals (paraquat, glyphosate, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid: 2,4-D, and ammonium chloride) in AD and PD has been highlighted. The mechanisms involved are glutamate excitotoxicity, dopaminergic pathway disruption, oxi

Top-down control of the descending pain modulatory system drives placebo analgesia.

In placebo analgesia, prior experience and expectations lead to pain suppression by the administration of an inert substance, but causal evidence for its neural basis is lacking. To identify the underlying neural circuits, we reverse-translated a conditioned placebo protocol from humans to mice. Surprisingly, the placebo effect suppresses both nociception and unconditioned emotional-motivational pain-related behavior. Descending pain modulatory neurons in the periaqueductal gray (PAG) are critical for both morphine and placebo antinociception. The placebo effect depends on input to the PAG fro

Highly efficient and safe sterilization of reusable medical devices and implants by slightly acidic electrolyzed water.

This study evaluated the potential of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) as an efficient and safe biofilm disinfectant for medical devices and implants. The results showed that SAEW rapidly eradicated planktonic bacteria and biofilms, outperforming NaClO. SAEW degraded proteins and eDNA in extracellular polymeric substances, thereby penetrating biofilms and acting on bacteria. SAEW-treated bacteria could not maintain normal morphology, resulting in bacterial lysis and death. SAEW downregulated biofilm-related genes, including cna, pvl and clfA of Staphylococcus aureus, and aap, icaR and

Copper-Catalyzed Asymmetric Cyclizative Sulfinamidation: Forging Indole-Based Stereogenic Sulfur(IV) Centers and Atropisomeric Chirality.

The structural prominence of indole-based sulfur-containing compounds in pharmacologically relevant substances stems from their versatile biofunctional capabilities. Despite their significance, the stereogenic elements embedded in these structures have frequently been overlooked in drug discovery endeavors primarily due to the absence of efficient synthetic methodologies. Here, we introduce a groundbreaking strategy for the enantioselective synthesis of indole-based sulfinamides via a copper-catalyzed asymmetric nucleophilic cyclization and sulfinamidation reaction. Utilizing ortho-alkynylanil

A Rare Case of Hemophilia: Acquired Factor VIII Deficiency.

Unlike hereditary hemophilia, acquired hemophilia is a rare life-threatening bleeding disorder that occurs in a person who has no personal or family history of bleeding episodes. It usually presents with new-onset subcutaneous/joint/muscle bleeding causing ecchymoses and hematomas, hematuria, GI bleeding, retroperitoneal bleeding, or rarely acute intracranial hemorrhage in elderly individuals. The diagnosis involves assessing prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and conducting mixing studies after ruling out lupus anticoagulants and interfering substances such as heparins. The effect of lactoferin on the free radical and cytokine status of cornea in the experimental thermal burn.

The free radical and cytokine statuses of the cornea during its thermal burn and the possibility of its correction by lactoferrin have been studied in Soviet Chinchilla rabbits. The development of a corneal thermal burn was accompanied by the development of oxidative stress (increased levels of TBA-reactive substances and carbonyl derivatives of proteins, decreased activity of SOD and GPx enzymes) and a pronounced inflammatory reaction with increased levels of TNF-1α, IL-10, TGF-1β. The use of lactoferrin had a pronounced therapeutic effect, which was manifested by accelerated healing, prevent

Microbial metabolism and health risk assessment of kitchen waste odor VOCs.

Kitchen waste (KW) generates odors comprising complex volatile organic compounds (VOCs). We used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to analyze VOCs, and 16S gene sequencing was used to analyze the microbial community composition and microbial metabolic mechanism. The results showed that the major odor-causing VOCs were hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, methyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide, and ethyl acetate. As the temperature increased, the VOCs and microbial community composition became more complex, and the microbial community related to VOC production included Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, Aceto

miRNAs as potential game-changers in bone diseases: Future medicinal and clinical uses.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs), short, highly conserved non-coding RNA, influence gene expression by sequential mechanisms such as mRNA breakdown or translational repression. Many biological processes depend on these regulating substances, thus changes in their expression have an impact on the maintenance of cellular homeostasis and result in the emergence of a variety of diseases. Relevant studies have shown in recent years that miRNAs are involved in many stages of bone development and growth. Additionally, abnormal production of miRNA in bone tissues has been closely associated with the development of

Impacts of Pesticides on Oral Cavity Health and Ecosystems: A Review.

Pesticides are chemical substances used to control, prevent, or destroy agricultural, domestic, and livestock pests. These compounds produce adverse changes in health, and they have been associated with the development of multiple chronic diseases. This study aimed to present a detailed review of the effect of pesticides on the oral cavity and the oral microbiome. In the oral cavity, pesticides alter and/or modify tissues and the microbiome, thereby triggering imbalance in the ecosystem, generating an inflammatory response, and activating hydrolytic enzymes. In particular, the imbalance in the

Mechanistic Insights into the Formation of 1-Alkylidene/Arylidene-1,2,4-triazolinium Salts: A Combined NMR/Density Functional Theory Approach.

In a recent report on the synthetic approach to the novel substance class of 1-alkylidene/arylidene-1,2,4-triazolinium salts, a reaction mechanism suggesting a regioselective outcome was proposed. This hypothesis was tested via a combined NMR and density functional theory (DFT) approach. To this end, three experiments with 13C-labeled carbonyl reactants were monitored in situ by solution-state NMR. In one experiment, an intermediate as described in the former mechanistic proposal was observed. However, incorporation of 13C isotope labels into multiple sites of the heterocycle could not be reco

Tuberculosis in Adolescents and Young Adults: Emerging Data on TB Transmission and Prevention among Vulnerable Young People.

Adolescents and young adults (AYA, ages 10-24 years) comprise a uniquely important but understudied population in global efforts to end tuberculosis (TB), the leading infectious cause of death by a single agent worldwide prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. While TB prevention and care strategies often overlook AYA by grouping them with either children or adults, AYA have particular physiologic, developmental, and social characteristics that require dedicated approaches. This review describes current evidence on the prevention and control of TB among AYA, including approaches to TB screening, dynam
