What Keeps Faculty Coming Back? Factors Associated with Continued Pursuit of Faculty Development.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) benefits patients with urinary symptoms caused by neurological diseases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with urinary symptoms from any kind of neurological disease were prospectively recruited between October 1996 and July 1998. Before attending the first assessment patients were asked to complete a week's diary recording the frequency of micturition, incontinence episodes, and frequency of pad and clothes changing. At the first assessment the patients completed the Frimodt-Moller urinary symptom questionnaire,

Bradycardia in Athletes: Prevalence, Mechanisms, and Risks.

BACKGROUND: Sinus bradycardia is a well-recognized physiological adaptation in endurance athletes, primarily attributed to sinus node remodeling or increased vagal modulation. Although genetic influences on resting heart rate (HR) have been observed, the genetic contribution to athletic bradycardia has not been elucidated. METHODS: We phenotyped current and former elite endurance athletes in the Pro@Heart cohort study using multimodal cardiac imaging, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and Holter monitoring. Genetic susceptibility to bradycardia was assessed using a validated HR-associated pol

Minimally invasive endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy for the prevention of maxillary sinusitis in association with dental implantation in the posterior maxilla--a proposal.

Penetration of the maxillary sinus floor membrane during sinus lift occasionally induces maxillary sinusitis. However, maxillary sinusitis may still develop even when its floor membrane has been kept intact during such procedures. The decisive factor for the occurrence of maxillary sinusitis is not the integrity of the membrane; more important is the patency of the maxillary sinus natural ostium. The occlusion of the natural ostium presumably results from the expansive edema of the sinus membrane induced by surgical manipulations to the maxillary sinus floor. We propose a minimally invasive en

[Combination of celiprolol and amiodarone in the treatment of recurrent ventricular tachycardia].

The combination of beta-blockers and amiodarone has been shown to be affective in the treatment of refractory chronic ventricular tachycardia. However, the possible induction of excessive sinus bradycardia can constitute a limitation to the use of this treatment. Celiprolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker with a partial beta-2 agonist activity and an alpha-2 blocking activity, with a minimal depressant effect on heart rate. It therefore seemed useful to evaluate this drug in combination with amiodarone in patients with chronic ventricular tachycardia refractory to amiodarone alone. Twelve me

Burden and determinants of hyperglycaemia and dyslipidaemia in Zimbabwean adults living with HIV on dolutegravir-based first-line antiretroviral therapy: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Dolutegravir (DTG)-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) is now the preferred first-line regimen for people living with HIV (PLWH) globally, including in Zimbabwe, which has an estimated adult HIV prevalence of 12.9%. While DTG offers a high genetic barrier to resistance and favourable tolerability, it has been linked to metabolic abnormalities - including abdominal obesity, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and impaired glucose regulation - that cluster together and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Data on this burden remain limited in Zimbabwe. We conducte

Optimized Oral Glutamatergic Augmentation in Refractory Home-Dominant Contamination Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder With Somatic, Affective, and Motivational Features: A Case Report of Incremental Functional Gains.

A proportion of patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) continue to experience disabling symptoms despite standard serotonergic treatment, antipsychotic augmentation, and psychological input. Contamination-focused OCD can be especially persistent when rituals are embedded in the home environment and reinforced by family patterns. Recent work has drawn attention to glutamatergic dysfunction, NMDA-AMPA signaling, and synaptic plasticity as possible treatment targets in refractory OCD. The Cheung glutamatergic regimen has been proposed as an oral, low-cost, ketamine-informed glutamaterg

A holistic lifestyle mobile health intervention for the prevention of type 2 diabetes and common mental disorders in Asian women with a history of gestational diabetes: a randomised control trial with 3-year follow-up protocol.

BACKGROUND: Women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are 12-fold more likely to develop type 2 diabetes (T2D) 4-6 years after delivery than women without GDM. Similarly, GDM is associated with the development of common mental disorders (CMDs) (e.g. anxiety and depression). Evidence shows that holistic lifestyle interventions focusing on physical activity (PA), dietary intake, sleep, and mental well-being strategies can prevent T2D and CMDs. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of a holistic lifestyle mobile health intervention (mHealth) with post-GDM women in preventi

The use of dry needling for a subject with chronic lateral hip and thigh pain: a case report.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lateral thigh pain, commonly referred to as greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS) and/ or iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is commonly treated by the physical therapist. Lateral thigh pain is commonly treated by the physical therapist. The sources of lateral thigh pain are commonly attributed to GTPS and/ or ITBS though various pathologies may contribute to this pain, of which trigger points (TrPs) may be an etiology. Dry needling (DN) is an intervention utilized by physical therapists where a monofilament needle is inserted into soft tissue in order to reduce pain t

Autonomic neural functions in space.

Autonomic neural functions are important to regulate vital functions in the living body. There are different methods to evaluate indirectly and directly autonomic, sympathetic and parasympathetic, neural functions of human body. Among various methods, microneurography is a technique to evaluate directly sympathetic neural functions in humans. Using this technique sympathetic neural traffic leading to skeletal muscles (muscle sympathetic nerve activity; MSNA) can be recorded from human peripheral nerves in situ. MSNA plays essentially important roles to maintain blood pressure homeostasis again
