Milk fat globule epidermal growth factor 8 (MFG-E8) is an opsonin involved in the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), apoptotic cell clearance is defective. However, whether aberrant MFG-E8 expression is involved in this defect is unknown. In this study, we examined the expression of MFG-E8 in COPD patients. MFG-E8, interleukin (IL)-1β and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β levels were measured in the plasma of 96 COPD patients (93 males, 3 females; age range: 62.12±10.39) and 87 age-matched healthy controls (85 males, 2 females; age

RATIONALE: Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) suffer from significantly more cardiovascular comorbidity and mortality than would be anticipated from conventional risk factors. The aim of this study was to determine whether COPD patients have a higher coronary artery calcium score (CACS) and epicardial fat burden, compared to control subjects, and their association with cardiovascular events.
METHODS: From a registry of 1906 patients 81 patients with clinically diagnosed COPD were one-to-one matched to 81 non-COPD control subjects with a smoking history, according to th

RATIONALE: Antielastin autoimmunity has been hypothesised to drive disease progression in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The proposed mechanism is currently disputed by conflicting data. The authors aimed to explore antibody responses against elastin in a large and extensively characterised COPD population and to assess elastin-specific peripheral T-cell reactivity in a representative subgroup.
METHODS: Antielastin antibodies were analysed with indirect ELISA on the plasma of 320 patients with COPD (Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease 1-4) and 143 smoking con

Enteropathy associated T-cell lymphoma (EATCL) is a high grade, pleomorphic peripheral T-cell lymphoma with usually cytotoxic phenotype. This is a case report of three patients with EATCL. The first patient was 50 year-old woman with four-year history of gluten sensitive enteropathy (GSE). Diagnosis of lymphoma was confirmed after the resection of the jejunum (small intestine obstruction). Pathohistological (PAS, Reticulin, Giemsa) and immunohistochemical (anti-LCA, anti-CD20, anti-CD45RO, anti-CD3) methods revealed the diagnosis of EATCL: CD45RO+, CD3+. After the third cycle of chemotherapy,

Intrahepatic gas (IHG) is commonly observed during early postmortem examinations of humans with upper or lower airway obstructions. We conducted a study to test the hypothesis that intrapulmonary gas could retrogradely spread to the hepatic vein following pulmonary barotrauma (PB). To establish a rat model of pulmonary barotrauma, we utilized a controllable pressure-vacuum pump to apply airway pressure (40, 60, or 80 mmHg). The rats were dissected directly at the end of the experiment, and histological analysis was performed through microscopic examination of the rats. Additionally, the rats w

Pyroptosis is involved in the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Andrographolide (AG) possesses anti-inflammatory activity; however, its role in alveolar macrophage (AM) pyroptosis in COPD is still unclear. This study is to explore AG’s effects on AM pyroptosis and its underlying mechanism. A murine COPD model was generated by cigarette smoke (CS) exposure, and lung pathological changes were evaluated. A cigarette smoke extract (CSE)-induced MH-S cell model was established in vitro, with cells pretreated with AG or the c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) inhibitor SP600125.

Preserved ratio impaired spirometry (PRISm) is an intermediate phenotype between normal lung function and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and it carries a high risk of progressing to COPD. Due to unique factors such as hypobaric hypoxia, the detection rate of PRISm is significantly higher in high-altitude environments than in plain areas. High-altitude hypoxia may contribute to the development and progression of PRISm through multiple mechanisms, including induction of systemic inflammatory responses, oxidative stress injury, abnormal activation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a hypersensitivity lung disease triggered by sensitization to Aspergillus fumigatus or other Aspergillus species, with 1.0%-3.5% incidence in asthma patients and 7%-15% incidence in cystic fibrosis patients. It is more common in patients with asthma or cystic fibrosis. Clinical manifestations include recurrent bronchial obstruction, cough, pulmonary infiltrates, and bronchiectasis. However, its actual incidence is likely underestimated due to complex diagnostic criteria and insufficient clinical awareness. To standardize the integrated traditio

This review summarizes key advances in mechanical ventilation for respiratory failure reported in 2025. In patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome receiving invasive ventilation, the emphasis has shifted from standardized protocols to individualized lung-protective strategies, with positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) titration increasingly guided by respiratory mechanics and multimodal physiological parameters. Airway pressure release ventilation has emerged as a promising tool for improving dorsal ventilation-perfusion matching, while prone positioning assessment has moved towar

BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) is a rare but severe noninfectious pulmonary complication that typically arises in the context of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Characterized by progressive small airflow obstruction and irreversible airflow limitation, it poses significant challenges in managing general anesthesia, especially in pediatric patients. There is currently no established consensus or clinical research on the optimal anesthetic approach for such cases, making this report noteworthy.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based therapy regenerates damaged structures of the respiratory system and restores lung function, thus providing a promising therapeutic approach for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Understanding the communication between injured alveolar cells and MSCs can improve the efficiency of MSC-based therapies. The present study analyzed the untargeted metabolomics of the supernatant of AEC-II injury induced by cigarette smoke extract and identified 205 differential metabolites. Phenotypic assays indicated that phenylacetylglutamine (PAG) significantly promoted the

We report the first successful case of volume reduction of a giant emphysematous bulla (GEB) using the latest shape-sensing robotic-assisted bronchoscopy (ssRAB). The patient was a 70-year-old male with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who developed GEB. He had previously undergone endobronchial valve (EBV) removal due to pneumonia caused by long-term implantation of EBVs for bulla volume reduction after a left emphysematous bulla rupture and subsequent pneumothorax. The patient visited our hospital for gradually worsening shortness of breath over two months. Chest radiography and

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and fatal disease characterized by the dysfunction of pulmonary endothelial cells (ECs) and obstructive vascular remodeling. cAbl (non-receptor tyrosine kinase c-Abelson) plays central roles in regulating cell-cycle arrest, apoptosis, and senescence after cellular stress. We hypothesized that cAbl is downactivated in experimental and human PAH, thus leading to reduced DNA integrity and angiogenic capacity of pulmonary ECs from patients with PAH (PAH-ECs). We found cAbl and phosphorylated cAbl concentrations to be lower in the endothelium o
