Barley transformation is an essential tool for a range of functional genomics studies as well as for future crop improvement. Biofortification is a strategy to reduce micronutrient malnutrition. The aim of this study was to investigate whether consumption of biofortified fresh maize can supply nutritionally meaningful amounts of provitamin A carotenoids (PVA), zinc, lysine, and tryptophan. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) proved to increase absorbance at 280 nm of grape skin and seed extracts containing it, diluted with ethanol-HCl to assess total flavonoids and anthocyanins in the same analysis. Additional absorbance at 280 nm was also observed in acetone:H2O extracts, if the acetone had not completely evaporated before the extracts were diluted with a solvent. Flavonoids were correctly quantified in the extracts when SO2 or acetone were removed by solid-phase extraction with a C18 RP as sorbent and methanol as eluting solvent.

A novel and fast method based on the solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled to a flow injection system for the determination of caffeine in coffee beans was developed. The caffeine extraction of coffee beans was carried out with hot water. We present a unique case of carcinoma diagnosed in port-site, two years after uncomplicated laparoscopic cholecystectomy for benign cholecystitis. The technology of supercritical CO2 fluid extraction for ginkgolic acids in the epicarp of Ginkgo biloba L. was studied. The effect of pressure, temperature and extraction time on the yield of the ginkgolic acids was explored. The optimum conditions for supercritical CO2 fluid extraction was 30 MPa, 45 degrees C, extraction time 6 h and the flow rate of CO2 2L/min. The ginkgolic acids were determined by HPLC. Supercritical CO2 fluid extraction exceled the traditional solvent extraction in high yield, high purification and easy operation.

We report a case of mediastinal liposarcoma resected by thoracoscopy. Despite the precautionary measures, chest wall implantations occurred rapidly at the port's sites in the chest wall and led to death within 24 months. We conclude that thoracoscopy is not a good approach for resection of anterior mediastinal masses in view of their possible malignant character.

Case histories of three patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy for unexpected gallbladder cancer are reviewed. Port-site recurrence was observed in two of them.
