Predictors of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms after musculoskeletal trauma.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) are common following musculoskeletal trauma and are associated with poorer recovery, disability, and reduced quality of life. Although psychosocial and injury-related factors have been linked to PTSS, limited research has examined longitudinal predictors or the relationship between injury severity and PTSS progression in people hospitalised for musculoskeletal trauma. OBJECTIVES: To identify predictors of PTSS at three and six months following musculoskeletal trauma and hospitalisation, and to examine the relationship between injury severity a

Posttrauma Benzodiazepine Use and Subsequent PTSD: A Population-Wide Analysis Following Extreme Traumatic Exposure.

Objective: To examine whether benzodiazepine use within 30 days after mass trauma increases posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) risk and whether timing or persistence of use modifies this association. Methods: This retrospective cohort study leveraged 3 advantages: large-scale clinical dataset (∼4 million individuals), unprecedented collective exposure to trauma, and novel methodological approach addressing severity bias. Using data from Clalit Health Services (covering ∼54% of the population), we identified 15,570 benzodiazepine-naïve adults who received a new benzodiazepine prescription wit

Protocol for a qualitative mechanistic study of MDMA with a sample of psychoanalytic psychotherapists: A phenomenological investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy (MDMA-AP) is a potentially transformative intervention for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite encouraging Phase III trial results, the psychological mechanisms underpinning MDMA's therapeutic effects remain insufficiently understood. Existing research on MDMA has emphasised neurobiological processes but has not adequately incorporated subjective, relational, and experiential processes that are likely to be central to optimising psychedelic-assisted treatments. In the absence of an established clinical psychol

Developmental trajectories, heterogeneous subgroups, and predictors of subgroup membership of PTSD among healthcare workers: An 18-month longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare workers are at high risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) when exposed to public health emergencies. The latent developmental trajectories of PTSD differ among individuals, even if they are exposed to similar environment. This study aimed to explore the longitudinal trajectories of PTSD among healthcare workers and to identify factors associated with different trajectory subgroups. METHODS: This study conducted four surveys over an 18-month. In total, 2867 healthcare workers were included at baseline, and ultimately, 2422 individuals who participated

Changes in the network temperature of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms among children and adolescents following earthquakes.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are among the most prevalent mental health sequelae in children and adolescents following earthquakes. A recently introduced metric under network theories of psychopathology, network temperature, quantifies the global stability of a symptom network. METHODS: To examine the developmental trajectory of network temperature in children and adolescents after earthquakes, we established eight prospective cohorts (2-4 waves per cohort; total N = 5,794) after the Wenchuan, Yaan, and Jiuzhaigou earthquakes. We assessed PTSD symptoms across thre

Prevalence and correlates of postpartum PTSD following emergency cesarean sections: implications for perinatal mental health care: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The increasing awareness of the emotional consequences of emergency cesarean deliveries (C-sections) highlights their substantial role in fostering postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the prevalence and determinants of PTSD following emergency C-sections, as well as the implications of these events on maternal mental health and welfare. METHODS: Undertaking extensive searches of Scopus, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar, we have incorporated studies published from 2013 onwards that examined the occurrence of

Factors associated with maternal birth-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in Brazil: The birth in Brazil national research study.

INTRODUCTION: A traumatic childbirth can lead some women to develop birth-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), an emotional stress response associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aimed to identify factors associated with maternal birth-related PTSS in Brazil. METHOD: Birth in Brazil I is a perinatal cohort study conducted between 2011 and 2012 with a nationally representative sample of 23,894 women. The first interview was conducted in the maternity ward, followed by two telephone interviews at 6 months and 18 months postpartum. PTSS was assessed using the I

Cortisol Imbalance and Fear Learning in PTSD: Therapeutic Approaches to Control Abnormal Fear Responses.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is mainly characterized by dysregulated fear responses, including hyperarousal and intrusive re-experiencing of traumatic memories. This work delves into the intricate interplay between abnormal fear responses, cortisol dysregulation, and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, elucidating their role in the manifestation of PTSD. Given the persistent nature of PTSD symptoms and the limitations of conventional therapies, innovative interventions are urgently needed. One promising avenue of research revolves around the modulation of cortisol through t

EpiWEAT: a new digital assessment tool for epigenetic studies.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) profoundly impacts women's health, increasing the risk of chronic and non-communicable diseases. Recent findings underscore the promise of epigenetic indicators to uncover the enduring effects of trauma on the human genome, especially concerning stress-related conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the lasting health impacts of violence against women, developing a digital tool specifically structured to consolidate crucial details about the contexts of violence, the relationship between victim and perpetr

Influence of Planned Versus Unplanned Cesarean Delivery on Postpartum Peritraumatic Distress: A Prospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: Postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a significant contributor to maternal morbidity. Peritraumatic distress, an immediate reaction to a traumatic event, is an early indicator of PTSD and may help identify patients at risk for postpartum PTSD soon after delivery. Previous studies report higher rates of postpartum PTSD after unplanned cesarean delivery. We hypothesized that peritraumatic distress scores, measured using the peritraumatic distress inventory (PDI), would differ between planned and unplanned cesarean deliveries. METHODS: In this observational prospective

Addressing the burden of violence on global mental health: contributions of Narrative Exposure Therapy across different health systems.

Post-traumatic stress disorder represents a substantial global mental health burden, particularly in the face of cumulative violence, forced migration, and structural inequities. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) configures a brief trauma-focused intervention that supports the reconstruction of autobiographical memory by the chronological narration of life events. By integrating fragmented traumatic experiences into a coherent narrative, NET facilitates emotional processing and restores continuity to disrupted life stories. This regional case series examines the integration of NET into the ment

Lessons from Hurricane Katrina: Psychological Recovery, Mental Health and Resilience in Children and Adolescents Post-Disaster.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to explore the psychological effects of disasters on children and adolescents following the 20 years since Hurricane Katrina. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite widespread devastation and trauma, many youths demonstrate resilience over time. Initial rates of posttraumatic stress are high, with nearly half of youth showing elevated symptoms. Rates gradually decrease over time; however, depression, anxiety and loneliness often persist long-term. Key predictors of poor mental health included additional trauma and limited resources, while resilience is suppo

Betrayal experiences among individuals living in war zones: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Betrayal, a component of moral injury, refers to the harm caused by the deliberate actions or inaction of someone trusted, violating one's values and beliefs. This study examines the impact of betrayal experiences-specifically perceptions of failure by political and military leadership-on mental health outcomes among civilians in Israeli conflict zones, focusing on anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It also explores the relationship between betrayal and war-related factors such as traumatic loss, forced displacement, and income loss, along with the roles

Cognitive Processing Therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Japan: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there is little evidence on the efficacy of CPT in East Asia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether CPT is effective in treating PTSD among outpatients in a Japanese medical setting. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This randomized clinical trial used a 16-week, single-center, assessor-blinded, parallel-group superiority design to examine the efficacy of CPT in conjunction with treatment as usual (CPT-TAU) vs waiting list with TAU (WL-TAU) from April 2016 through Decemb

Assessment of PTSD and CPTSD Symptoms in Children and Adolescents Exposed to Earthquakes: An Evaluation Using Latent Profile.

This study aims to identify the profiles of post-traumatic symptoms observed in children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 who were traumatised by experiencing the February 6 earthquakes, which are referred to as the disaster of the century in Türkiye and were centred in Kahramanmaraş, and to reveal the extent to which these identified profiles differ in terms of post-traumatic cognitions, trauma-related safety behaviour, depression, anxiety and well-being. In this context, data were collected from 282 children and adolescents residing in the earthquake-affected areas and analysed using latent prof

"Permission to Come Out of The Dark": A Qualitative Analysis of Male and Female Veterans' Use of a Telehealth Art Therapy Intervention.

Telehealth has expanded access to psychotherapy for veterans, yet little is known about how art therapy is experienced in remote formats. In this paper, we describe a thematic analysis that involved male and female veterans with PTSD and TBI (aside from one participant without a TBI) in individual telehealth art therapy. This paper explores the similarities and differences in male and female veterans' engagement in art therapy. Nine veterans (6 male, 3 female) diagnosed with PTSD (with most also having TBI) participated in eight sessions of individual telehealth art therapy. Clinical notes, se

An Update on Psychotherapy for the Treatment of PTSD.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are part of the normal response to trauma. Most trauma survivors will recover over time without intervention, but a significant minority will develop chronic PTSD, which is unlikely to remit without intervention. Currently, only two medications, sertraline and paroxetine, are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat PTSD, and the combination of brexpiprazole and sertraline and MDMA-assisted therapy have FDA applications pending. These medications, and the combination of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, are not recommended as fir

[Prevalence of post-traumatic stress symptoms among patients with midfacial fractures].

Introduction: Midfacial fractures can result not only in functional and aesthetic impairments but also in psychological disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The most characteristic symptoms are intrusion (unwanted memories, dreams) and avoidance (efforts to evade trauma-related reminders). Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of PTSD symptoms among patients with midfacial fractures and to analyze their associations with demographic (sex, age) and clinical (etiology, hospitalization) factors. We hypothesized that symptoms would be more severe in w
