Uveitis encompasses multiple different conditions that are all characterized by intra-ocular inflammation. Uveitis occurs in the context of many different rheumatological conditions and carries a substantial risk to vision. Uveitis can develop both at the early stages of rheumatic diseases, sometimes even preceding other clinical features, and at later stages of disease. Uveitis can also occur as either a direct or an indirect complication of therapies used to treat patients with rheumatic disease. Conversely, patients with uveitis of non-rheumatic aetiology sometimes require immunosuppression

A 29-year-old man presented with longstanding, stable, unilateral vision loss in the setting of a remote paintball injury. His examination was notable for a sensory exotropia as well as multiple foci of posterior synechiae, segments of white lenticular material and islands of lenticular cells within a grossly intact capsule, and severe zonular compromise in the affected eye. The majority of the nuclear lens material was absent. The patient was diagnosed with post-traumatic lens absorption and underwent synechialysis, capsulotomy, excision of remnant lenticular material, and placement of a sulc

Vision plays a crucial role in the survival of animals, and the visual system has particularly selectively evolved in response to the visual environment, ecological niche, and species habitats in vertebrate species. To date, a horizontal streak of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) distribution pattern is observed across mammal species. Here, we report that the giant panda's vertically oriented visual streak, combined with current evidence of the animal's forward-placed eyes, ocular structure, and retinal neural topographic distribution patterns, presents the emergence of a well-adapted binocular vis

Localized hypothermia treatment can reduce the risk of vision loss due to ocular trauma. Hypothermia reduces inflammation and metabolic rate, and improves blood flow to prevent nerve and tissue damage. This paper presents a finite element thermal analysis to determine the efficacy of local hypothermia treatment administered using a scleral eye contact ring that acts as a heat sink. A realistic model of the human eye orbit, including fat and muscle, is created using MRI scans. A simplified CAD-based model is also created based on the first model. A transient analysis is performed by lowering th

Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is the most frequent presentation of albinism, a heterogeneous rare genetic condition generally associated with variable alterations in pigmentation and with a profound visual impairment. There are non-syndromic and syndromic types of OCA, depending on whether the gene product affected impairs essentially the function of melanosomes or, in addition, that of other lysosome-related organelles (LROs), respectively. Syndromic OCA can be more severe and associated with additional systemic consequences, beyond pigmentation and vision alterations. In addition to OCA, alb

Orbital trauma is often associated with foreign bodies. Wooden foreign bodies pose an urgent need for removal owing to their reactive nature and the high risk for infection. Though visual prognosis depends on associated ocular trauma, in selected cases, excellent visual and cosmetic outcomes are possible. An 18-year-old woman presented to our trauma facility with a history of fall directly onto a wooden stick from a height. On examination, there was a large wooden foreign body in the left medial orbit, extending into the ethmoidal sinus as visualised on imaging. After administration of periope

Fibrillin microfibrils are extensible polymers that endow connective tissues with long-range elasticity and have widespread distributions in both elastic and non-elastic tissues. They act as a template for elastin deposition during elastic fibre formation and are essential for maintaining the integrity of tissues such as blood vessels, lung, skin and ocular ligaments. A reduction in fibrillin is seen in tissues in vascular ageing, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, skin ageing and UV induced skin damage, and age-related vision deterioration. Most mutations in fibrillin cause Marfan syndrom

A 73-year-old male patient presented with ocular pain, redness, and blurred vision in the left eye, which had been ongoing for more than 2 months. An oval-shaped paracentral corneal ulcer with stromal infiltration and a mild anterior chamber reaction were found. Despite treatment with empiric antibiotics, the lesion progressed and corneal thinning in the middle area was noted. The culture yielded Candida parapsilosis. We therefore prescribed topical 0.2% fluconazole (FCZ) in combination with oral FCZ as an antifungal treatment, following which the stromal infiltration gradually subsided. Compl
